App Giveaway: Safety Note+ for iPhone Posted: 27 Sep 2011 04:16 PM PDT Safety Note+ is a new note-taking app by Eightythree Technology that is password protected to guard your notes from prying eyes. It also has the ability to share notes to another iPhone over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Safety Note+ not only does fantastic job of protecting your notes, but it does so with style. The UI is stunning and simple to use. I’m not a fan of the combination lock nor dark themes, but a few quick setting changes converts will convert the combination lock to a keypad and the black background to a beautiful wood one.
GiveawayThe good folks at Eightythree Technology have given us 5 promo codes to give away to our awesome readers! For a chance to win, just leave a comment below! Safety Note+ is available on the iPhone for an introductory price of $0.99. Have an app you’d love to see featured on TiPb? T-Mobile addresses the iPhone (or lack thereof) to customers Posted: 27 Sep 2011 03:23 PM PDT In a company blog post earlier today, Cole Brodman, Chief Marketing Officer for T-Mobile USA, told customers that they were interested in offering a “no-compromise iPhone experience” on their network, but offered little details on the negotiations between the carrier and Apple.
One interesting takeaway is the current amount T-Mobile customers using an unlocked iPhone on the service. Although T-Mobile has never offered the iPhone to its customers, over a million users have been able to unlock the iPhone to run on the network. Funny, though, that Brodman went into how T-Mobile offers a plethora of Android devices to cull would-be iPhone users until they’re officially under the Apple umbrella. Given recent surveys suggesting roughly 31 percent of current Android device owners are planning on jumping ship to the iPhone as their next purchase, this doesn’t bode well for T-Mobile who currently has the lowest number of US customers (around 32 million). It will be interesting to see how the AT&T/T-Mobile merger plays out and if that will have any impact on T-Mobile finally offering the iPhone to its customers. Source: T-Mobile via AndroidCentral |
Lost iPhone 5 prototype source of case leaks? Posted: 27 Sep 2011 02:14 PM PDT Chris Chang from M.I.C. Gadgets claims that Apple manufacturer Foxconn may have “lost” an iPhone 5 prototype, which was subsequently sold to case manufacturers who then promptly began producing cases that leaked onto the internet, flooding us with rumors of the larger, wider, tear-drop shaped form factor.
Apple has been known to produce more than one iPhone prototype before — an ambitious model and a more conservative model if the ambitious one doesn’t come together in time. Whether or not this story is accurate, whether or not Apple had this type of prototype in the pipe for iPhone 5, and whether or not they’re going to bring it to market are all unknowns at this point. What’s not an unknown is that Apple will finally settle this once and for all on October 4. |
Apple’s request for trademark on multi-touch denied Posted: 27 Sep 2011 12:48 PM PDT The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has formally denied Apple’s application for a trademark on multi-touch. The USPTO denied Apple’s original request but Apple decided to appeal the decision. The decision was upheld and Apple was denied again. They originally applied for the trademark in January of 2007. The decision to deny the patent was on the basis that the term “multi-touch” has become somewhat generic. It’s now used to describe touchscreen technology in not only Apple products but pretty much every touchscreen smartphone and tablet on the market. Apple did not pass tests that determine “acquired distinctiveness”, according to the Board of Appeals.
Even though the first iPhone somewhat started the whole multi-touch market, the term has been used extensively since then and has taken on a much broader base than just Apple products. Do you think Apple should have been given the trademark or do you think the decision was fair? |
Apple “Let’s talk iPhone” event set for Oct. 4 Posted: 27 Sep 2011 08:43 AM PDT Jim Dalrymple of the The Loop got one of the shiny invites Apple is sending out for their “Let’s talk iPhone” event to be held, as rumored, on October 4.
Will we see the iOS 5 gold master (GM) on or before the event? Will we see an iPhone 4GS or iPhone 5, a white iPod touch? All we know for certain is this — one more week and the rumors will finally be replaced with real announcements. Can’t wait. Source: The Loop |

Be part of the Cinderella Story with with Cinderella animated picture book for iPad [Kids Corner] Posted: 27 Sep 2011 06:31 AM PDT Nosy Crow has released their newest animated storybook, Cinderella. It’s the same story that we’ve all grown to love, only this version allows you to add your child’s picture to the magic mirror! What a great way to add more excitement to this classic story! Growing up, I had a book that was personalized with my name and loved it, but that’s nowhere near as cool as having your face included the story! I can’t wait to read this to my niece – I know she’ll love it.
Cinderella is available on the iPad for $5.99 . Have an app you’d love to see featured on TiPb? Email us at iosapps@tipb.com, tell us about your app (include an iTunes link), and we’ll take a look. |

Official Facebook for iPad app coming at iPhone 5 event? Posted: 27 Sep 2011 05:29 AM PDT According to Mashable, Facebook will finally launch the official Facebook for iPad app next to an update to its iPhone counterpart at Apple’s iPhone 5 event next week. Former Facebook developer Jeff Verkoeyen recently spoke out against Facebook yesterday for dragging their feet on releasing the long rumored iPad app. Apparently “a combination of timing and a strained relationship with Apple” was at the heart of the issue, but the two have finally come to an agreement. Why?
To be honest, at this point I’m not holding my breath and will believe it when I see it in the App Store. In the meantime, check out our Top 5 Facebook for iPad apps to help you with the wait. Source: Mashable |
Amazon Kindle Fire — Android software meets PlayBook hardware meets iPad content? Posted: 26 Sep 2011 09:40 PM PDT Rumor has it word that Amazon’s rumored 7-inch tablet will be known as the “Kindle Fire”, and in addition to a forked version of Android software, it might also be using a reduced cost version of the BlackBerry PlayBook hardware. TechCrunch scored the name Kindle Fire, and says Amazon won’t be ready to release it until the second week of November. Ryan Block from GDGT further broke down the reasons TechCrunch felt inclined to compare the form-factor of the Kindle Fire to that of the Blackberry Playbook:
Block seems worried about this “shortcut” move by Amazon on the hardware, but TechCrunch asserts that the user-experience is top notch thanks to custom Android software running the tablet. Regardless, it’s an interesting pedigree to say the least. Amazon has also apparently been working on last minute content deals with Fox for streaming movies and TV shows, and the tablet is expected to include their MP3 service and Kindle bookstore next to a proprietary Android Marketplace. Additionally, AllThingsD says a few big-name magazine publishers have signed on to provide content for the device.
And then there’s the pricing issue. It was previously speculated that Amazon would price the tablet at around $250 with the inclusion of a free Amazon Prime membership, which comes with their popular streaming video service and free shipping on all products across the site. It’s now believed that Amazon may sell the Kindle Fire at $300 with Amazon Prime included, with another option available at $250 without the service. We’ll have to wait and see after the announcement on Wednesday, but so far the rumor buildup has my curiosity piqued. Could this actually be the first real iPad competitor everyone has been waiting for, or will it only grow the still maturing tablet market even more? Source: TechCrunch, GDGT, AllThingsD |
