Posted: 26 Sep 2011 05:00 PM PDT

It’s no secret that the iPhone is equipped with a great little camera. In fact, there is a entire genre of photography dedicated to it – iPhoneography.

In recognition of the iPhone’s great photographic potential, TiPb has opened up a Photography and Video forum, and what a better way to celebrate it than to have a contest! A photo contest, that is.

To enter, head on over the forums and submit up to 3 of your best photos. The rules? The photos must have been taken with an iPhone and edited only with iPhone apps. With each submission, include which apps you used to make your edits.

The winner will receive a Joby GorillaMobile tripod for iPhone! This awesome little accessory includes a case that can be connected to the GorrillaMobile tripod in either landscape or portrait orientation. The legs of the GorillaMobile are extremely flexible and can be wrapped around and attached to nearly every surface. Every serious iPhoneographer should have one!

You have one week to submit your entries. We’ll choose our 5 favorites, post them on the blog, and let our readers vote for the winner!

Now, get shooting!

Play your favorite classic puzzle games with Puzzle Love for iPhone

Posted: 26 Sep 2011 04:50 PM PDT

Puzzle Love is an iPhone app equipped with 5 different puzzle types: Sudoku, 5×5, Target, and Wordbuilder.

I’ve spent a little time with Puzzle Love and I must say – the UI is beautiful! It’s no secret that I’m a sucker for a pretty interface, and Puzzle Love has surely grabbed my attention. Now, if only I could be better at something other than Sudoku.

Puzzle love is a beautiful world of traditional puzzles that are challenging, and a joy to play at the same time. Inside you’ll find:

  • Sudoku – everyone loves sudoku!
  • 5×5 – Sometimes going by other names, in 5×5 you make words left to right and top to bottom on a 5 cell by 5 cell grid. Harder than it sounds!
  • Target – Our favourite. Make words of 4 letters or more using the 9 letters given to you – and don’t forget to use the target letter!
  • Wordbuilder – Target’s little brother – you’re only given 5 letters and can use any combination to make words of 3 letters or more.

Features:

  • Puzzles come in packs.
  • You start with a sample pack with one of each puzzle.
  • Additional packs are available to download right from the start.
  • Free packs are released once a week with a few puzzles. These are free, as in beer!
  • Premium packs are available at any time, with new ones being added constantly. These aren’t free, but are cheap for the fun you’ll get!
  • Bonus packs are awarded to you when you do things we like. This could be finishing a pack, or it could be something else.

Puzzle Love is available on the iPhone for Free.

Carriers starting to advertise iPhone 5 release

Posted: 26 Sep 2011 02:03 PM PDT

Vodafone now has a teaser page up on their site for what we’d imagine is the iPhone 5. They’re advertising it as “this year’s biggest smartphone release” so we can only assume it’s a placeholder for whatever iPhone Apple is rumored to announce on October 4th.

The page also gives subscribers the option to sign up for e-mail updates on the mystery phone. Hopefully we are only a few days away from hearing about an announcement and a few weeks away from an actual announcement. How many of you still think we’ll see a new iPhone available before the end of October?

The screenshot below was also sent to us by a TiPb reader who received a text from Rogers about reserving the upcoming iPhone. The text reads:

As a valued customer, we want to let you know that we have the Rogers Reservation System. This means you could be one of the first in line in Canada for the next iPhone as soon as it’s available to reserve! Replay YES to be notified when the next iPhone can be reserved. Visit www.rogers.com/rogersreservations to learn more.

It appears carriers either know something we don’t or they’re still assuming at this point. What do you think?

Ex-Facebook dev talks about iPad app delays

Ex-Facebook dev talks about iPad app delays

Jeff Verkoeyen, an ex-Facebook developer who was the lead engineer on the Facebook for iPad project, wrote on his personal blog about the internal battle that took place between him and Facebook, and goes a long way to explaining why we still haven’t seen the app.

It is now nearly 5 months since the app was feature complete and I haven't seen it released except for when the project was leaked on Techcrunch. Needless to say this was a frustrating experience for me. The experience of working on this app was a large contribution to the reasons why I left Facebook, though that doesn't mean it wasn't a difficult decision.

MG Siegler at TechCrunch suspects the delay may be tied to negotiation issues between Apple and Facebook, even though Apple would do well in having an official Facebook for iPad app in the App Store. As you may recall, they were in talks for upwards of 18 months on the Ping deal that ultimately fell through at the last minute because Facebook demanded too much in terms of user information.

But Apple has always wanted Facebook to release an iPad app. The Facebook iPhone app is the most downloaded app of all time. And there are countless third-party Facebook iPad apps that are amongst the top downloads all time, even though most aren't very good. At first, Facebook wasn't going to focus on the iPad. Then they decided to, but they also realized the app could be used as leverage in their dealings with Apple. That's what we believe has been going on over the past several months.

It’s also possible that the delayed iPad app has something to do with Facebook’s Project Spartan, an app store that will offer games and news apps that run inside Safari, or as Web Clips on the home screen. Facebook and Apple could be working together on the HTML5 project, prompting continuous delays for the iPad app as deals are hammered out.

Robert Scoble also chimed in last week (on Google+ of all places) noting that Facebook may be holding off until Apple’s iPhone 5 announcement on October 4th.

By the way, I heard a rumor from a usually credible source that Facebook may not announce an iPad app tomorrow, but will save it for October 4th instead. Now THAT will be very interesting news, since I know Apple really hates Facebook.

Either way, our patience is wearing thin… In the meantime, check out our Top 5 Facebook Apps for iPad to hold you over until the official app is released.

WordPress for iPhone, iPad gets updated

Posted: 26 Sep 2011 09:13 AM PDT

WordPress has updated their iOS app to version 2.9. The app now comes with a row above the keyboard with a number of rich-text and formatting options, including the ability to insert links and a new fullscreen editing mode.

It’s easy to manage your WordPress blog or site from your iOS device. With WordPress for iOS, you can moderate comments, create or edit posts and pages, and add images or videos with ease. All you need is a WordPress.com blog or a self-hosted WordPress.org site running 2.9.2 or higher.

  • A Feature-Rich Content Editor. Now you can easily format text, make bulleted lists, create links, and do all kinds of other fancy stuff. (It's about time, right?)
  • Full Screen Editing. No more teeny-weeny content editor — now you can view more text at a time while you post on the go.
  • Reading Made Easy. Keeping track of your favorite blogs has never been easier. Browse all the latest posts on blogs you follow in one place, right from your iPhone.
  • Quick Photo will now use the post format for images (if your theme supports it).
  • You can now post pictures that you've already taken with Quick Photo.
  • Your stats referrer links and comment links can now be opened right from this app.

I won’t be using the new features too much, as I like to use Markdown for Mail on my iPad for the right formatting whenever I blog on-the-go, but I’m sure many bloggers using WordPress will welcome this update with open arms. WordPress has lacked many of the features most bloggers see as a necessity in their iOS app until this update, so go grab it and start playing around!

WordPress for iOS is available for free on the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

Apple shifting iPad 2 production to new Brazilian plant?

Posted: 26 Sep 2011 09:12 AM PDT

Bloomberg reports that Apple has cut iPad 2 orders from Foxconn in China by up to 25%, which likely indicates Apple shifting production to the new Brazilian plant, according to JPMorgan analyst Mark Moskowitz.

Several supply-chain vendors indicated in the past two weeks that Apple lowered fourth-quarter iPad orders 25 percent, the first such cut that analysts at JPMorgan's electronic manufacturing services team in Hong Kong said they have ever seen. The report didn't list the affected companies, and Gokul Hariharan, one of the report's authors, said he couldn't comment when reached by Bloomberg News today.

We think it’s a bit premature to pin this on Apple gearing up for iPad 3 production, as TiPb recently heard Apple had returned iPad 3 to the traditional spring schedule. Instead, the idea of Apple shifting production to the new plant seems more likely. Earlier this month, The Brazilian Minister of Science and Technology, Aolizio Mercadante, has confirmed that the new Foxconn factory in Jundiai Brazil is up and running.

Moskowitz believes Apple will sell between 10.9 and 12 million iPads during the 4th quarter, up from 9.25 million in Q3.

Apple working on curved-glass display for the iPhone 6 in 2012?

Posted: 26 Sep 2011 08:38 AM PDT

Randomly accurate rumor site Digitimes is once again beating the drum on rumors they spurred up back in May about Apple prepping a curved-glass design across iOS devices including the iPhone 6 for 2012.

Apple reportedly also has bought glass polishing equipment for its suppliers in preparation for the production of devices fitted with curved cover glass. Lens Technology, Fuji Crystal, G-Tech are said to be major cover glass suppliers of Apple. While Lens and Fuji focus on iPhones, G-Tech supplies mainly for iPad

As always with rumors from Digitimes we urge you to take this with a 3.5-inch grain of salt. Apple supposedly purchased upwards of 300 glass cutting machines earlier in the year that they’ve stored in warehouses until production yield rates meet their requirements, and glass makers have had a hard time entertaining the idea of producing curved glass for Apple because of capital costs.

We’ll have to wait until next year before we see if Apple pushes out an iPhone with a curved-glass display… or if they’re just using them for all the windows on their new mothership HQ.
