October 4 iPhone event to be held on Apple campus?

October 4 iPhone event to be held on Apple campus?

John Paczkowski of All Things D, who originally claimed his sources told him that Apple would be holding their next iPhone event on October 4, now also claims that said event will take place on Apple’s own Cupertino campus.

Why? That's not entirely clear. Perhaps the release date was too much of a moving target to risk booking a large space like Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA), which has hosted a number of big product unveils in the past. Perhaps, the company felt a more intimate venue was best for newly installed CEO Tim Cook's first media event. Perhaps YBCA was simply already booked. Whatever the reason, the world will get it's first look at the next iPhone at Apple's Town Hall Auditorium in early October.

While Apple hasn’t officially announced a date let along a place, Paczkowski sources are usually solid. My guess is that Apple will increasingly hold their events on their terms and on their turf. Just wait until they open their new spaceship headquarters in a few years…

App for That: How to slow down video playback to 1 fps on iPhone, iPad

Posted: 25 Sep 2011 10:23 AM PDT

There are hundreds of thousands of iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad apps for just about everything — so how come the one you need, the one you know just has to be there, is so hard to find? Enter TiPb’s new weekly feature where staff and readers alike sort through the App Store and help you find just the right App for That. This week, RogerL asks:

I’m still using my Palm Treo and The Core Pocket Media Player to play my swimming, golf swing and Tai Chi training video clips in slow motion. Was hoping to move to the iPhone to use the bigger better screen.

Do you know of an iPhone video player that can play back slower than 50%?

To see what we found for Roger, follow along after the break!

VideoPix: Video Frame Capture & Slow Motion Player [$0.99 - App Store link] is an iPhone and iPad app that allows you to slow down video playback to 1 fps.

The easiest way to access video files for VideoPix is through the iPhone or iPad’s Photos app, but there’s a good chance that Roger does not have his above mentioned videos stored there. Luckily, VideoPix also allows you to import videos with iTunes File Sharing (providing they are in MP4 or MOV format).

Anyone else have any App for That suggestions for Roger? Let him — and all of us — know.

Having trouble finding what you need in the app store? Head on over to our App and Game Feature Forum and let us know what you’re looking for. The TiPb community will do our best to find you just the right App for That!

Samsung concession store using Apple’s icons on its display wall

Posted: 25 Sep 2011 01:54 AM PDT

Samsung, who is currently embroiled in a patent war with Apple, looks to have scored a particular nasty own goal — using icons which clearly belong to Apple in its advertising. The wall in the picture was taken in a concession store in Italy's Centro Sicilia.

A concession store is basically a store within another store run by a separate retailer. In this one, the wall of apps clearly shows iOS icons for mobile Safari and the App Store. The icons are repeated across the wall at least three times. A strange one when you consider the shenanigans going on behind the scenes between these two companies. The last thing you would want is an embarrassing mistake like this to sway opinion.

It will be interesting to see if Samsung decides to make any comment on the picture. I am sure there is a totally reasonable explanation for the mistake, because Samsung does claim to have a commitment to innovation and distinctive design…

iPhone 5 cases appearing in AT&T reseller inventory lists?

Posted: 24 Sep 2011 08:19 PM PDT

TiPb received the above screenshot today which purports to show Case-Mate Barely There cases for iPhone 5 in an AT&T reseller point-of-sale system (POS). We’ve seen a lot of case leaks before, even Case-Mate leaks, and it’s not hard to imagine case makers gambling on leaked designs, but retail systems stocking them already?

Seriously, October 4 can’t get here soon enough.
