Samsung wants iPhones and 3G iPads banned in the Netherlands Posted: 23 Sep 2011 01:52 PM PDT Samsung has already sued Apple over patent infringements and now they’re attempting to get a full out ban of iPhones and 3G iPads in the Netherlands. They’ve sued Apple on infringement of four patents and not only want a ban but a full retail recall of any device that uses 3G technology.
The patents involved are standards-essential patents. They are incorporated as internationally excepted standards and the patent holder (Samsung) is obligated to grant licenses to third parties. Florian Mueller, an active patent consultant, believes that an injunction won’t happen unless Apple refuses to pay up if royalties are owed to Samsung.
Samsung may be growing more aggressive with Apple due to the fact that Apple has taken some of their display business elsewhere. Apple was Samsung’s number two customer last year so that could have a lot to do with why Samsung hasn’t filed patent suits in the past. But at the end of the day Apple will probably just pay the royalties if ordered to and there will still be iPhones and iPads equipped with 3G for all. |

Amazon holding a press conference on September 28, is it to announce its iPad competitor? Posted: 23 Sep 2011 10:52 AM PDT Amazon is sending out invites for a press conference on Wednesday September 28 in New York. The word on the street is that Amazon will finally make one of the worst kept tech secrets official and announce its iPad competitor. The invite gives nothing away; it's just a text based invite with no clues at all.
Rumors have always pointed to Amazon launching a tablet around the October timeframe so this announcement would fit in nicely with that. The tablet in case you haven't heard yet will be a 7-inch full color affair, built on a heavily customized version of Android and should be available for as little as $250. One thing is now for sure, we will not have to wait much longer to see exactly how Amazon plans on taking on Apple and the iPad in particular. The next few weeks should be some of the most interesting of the year!

Spotify now open to the masses Posted: 23 Sep 2011 10:29 AM PDT Just two months after hitting the US in an invite-only beta, Spotify is now open to to the public and is offering users 6 months worth of unlimited streaming under the free account.
Spotify is on a role right now, as just yesterday they partnered up with Facebook to allow free streaming on the social network from user profiles at no cost. I’ve been in the invite-only beta since it launched in the US and have been loving it, although I can’t see myself spending the money for a premium account just yet given my loyalty to iTunes and iCloud. Spotify is still one of the best online streaming music providers out there, however, so give it a try and let us know how you like the service! Spotify is available for Free for iPhone and requires a free Spotify account. There are also premium and unlimited accounts available starting at $4.99 per month. |
Touch panel production issues to limit initial iPhone 5 shipments? Posted: 23 Sep 2011 06:23 AM PDT Randomly accurate rumor site Digitimes reports that, according to supply chain makers, Apple may have trouble meeting initial demand for the iPhone 5 thanks to a defect discovered in the production process for the touch panels made by Wintek.
The defect involves a “delayed bubble” effect which is harder to avoid during touch panel production, especially when the problem isn’t found during the laminating process. If the problem isn’t found before assembly, Wintek will have to scrap the panel altogether, essentially losing money and output during the production process. Wintek currently accounts for some 20-25% of the overall production of touch panels Apple uses in the iPhone 5 with Chimei Innolux and TPK Holding pushing out the rest, so the problem shouldn’t have a huge impact on volume out of the gate. Apple running into production issues isn’t completely unheard of, either, and Wintek also says to expect a quick remedy due to the fact that the lamination process in the iPhone 5 touch panels is the same as the iPhone 4. |
