Skype admits to iPhone app security problem, releasing a fix “soon”

Posted: 21 Sep 2011 01:42 PM PDT

Skype for iPhone hits 3.0, adds video calling

Skype has stated they are aware of a serious cross-site scripting vulnerability within the chat feature for Skype on the iPhone. The security hole could allow for malicious JavaScript code to access to your address book and is known to affect versions 3.0.1 and below.

Skype reached out to TechCrunch to say they’re hard at work on getting an update pushed to the App Store.

We are working hard to fix this reported issue in our next planned release which we hope to roll out imminently. In the meantime we always recommend people exercise caution in only accepting friend requests from people they know and practice common sense internet security as always.

The funny thing is, Skype has known about the issue for a while now. AppSec Consulting security researcher Phil Purviance helped discover the problem and let Skype know about it almost a month ago. Skype responded saying they would release an update earlier this month, but we’re nearing the end of September and there’s no update to be found.

Here’s hoping Skype gets on this quick and pushes out an update soon, but in the meantime check out the video below detailing how the vulnerability works.

Add more browsing functionality with BackForwardList for Safari [jailbreak]

Posted: 21 Sep 2011 01:40 PM PDT

BackForwardList for Safari

If you use Safari rather frequently on your jailbroken iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch you may want to check out BackForwardList for Safari. The main purpose is to enhance the functionality of the back and forward buttons.

Instead of tapping to go back a page, you can hold down on the back or forward button to gain quick access to your history. I’ve found this useful when I want to go back to a site I was browsing a few pages back. It’s much easier than just tapping on the back button multiple times.

The tweak doesn’t add any shortcuts or icons to your springboard and there are no setting to configure. Just download it from Cydia and you’re good to go. You can also swipe sideways within your history to delete individual items. BackForwardList for Safari is a free download from the Cydia store.

Facebook changes now appearing within Facebook for iPhone

Facebook iPhone changes

Facebook has yet again changed the way the news feed functions and manages content. Love it or hate it, these changes are also starting to appear in the Facebook for iPhone app as well. While there is no update from the App Store, it appears a lot of the changes were made from the back end. Your news feed will now filter most recent news at the top followed by older stories.

I’ve also noticed that the blue corners in the top left of each post appear in the iPhone app but it seems you aren’t able to interact with them (yet anyways). These tags allow you to mark things that you like by toggling them. I’m assuming the theory behind this is that Facebook will start showing you more and more things it “thinks” you are interested in and not show as much of the rest. Nice idea but how well it’ll actually work is yet to be seen.

How many of you are seeing the new changes in your news feed within Facebook for iPhone?

Agile Project Manager (Scrum Sprint Planner) for iPad

Posted: 21 Sep 2011 08:33 AM PDT

Agile Project Manager (Scrum Sprint Planner) is an iPad app that works as a tool for project management using the Agile methodology known as Scrub. The recent update includes Dropbox support.

Agile Project Manager is a software tool for project management which uses all advantages of Agile methodology known as Scrum – flexibility and adaptiveness to changing project requirements.

  • Plan and track the progress of your development cycle on your iPad during multiple sprints. This gives you the possibility to be always intact with your team and project stakeholders.
  • Quickly create a detailed plan of the sprint and then manage the sprint tasks by all canons of the Scrum methodology – just by dragging them between the corresponding columns.
  • Sprint progress is displayed in a form of burn down chart, which gives the clear visual picture of the current state of sprint to project stakeholders.
  • Each sprint can be saved at any time as a separate project file, so you can manage multiple projects with Agile Project Manager.
  • Enhanced support of Dropbox synchronization.

Agile Project Manager is available on the iPad for $11.99.

iPhone 5 launch event to happen on October 4? [Updated]

Posted: 21 Sep 2011 05:06 AM PDT

iPhone 5 launch event to happen on October 4?

According to a report from All Things D, Apple will hold its media event to launch the iPhone 5 on October 4.  The information comes from "sources close to the situation".

Tuesday, October 4. That's the day Apple is currently expected to hold its next big media event, according to sources close to the situation, where the tech giant will unveil the next iteration of its popular iPhone.

The event will be of particular significance because it will supposedly be fronted for the first time by new CEO Tim Cook. Tim Cook will be the main presenter according to the same sources but will have help as usual from Scott Forstall, Phil Schiller and maybe even Eddy Cue.

TiPb previously heard that Apple was moving up the iPhone 5 launch from an October 14 to October 7 timeline, but if the announcement is only happening on October 4, the launch would have to be later in the month, perhaps October 14 again.

There has been no official word from Apple to confirm the date and until there is, this remains nothing more than a rumor; although All Things D is a very reliable source. Apple will send out invites for the event but notoriously leaves it as late as possible. We will let you know as soon as it is set in stone!

UPDATE: Jim Dalrymple for The Loop, whose sources at Apple are usually terrific, seems to agree about the date. [The Loop]

Yep.
