Tim Cook: iPhone 5 postponed, all ahead on iPrinters [Humor]

Tim Cook: iPhone 5 postponed, all ahead on iPrinters [Humor]

In classic The Onion fashion, they’re lampooning Apple’s brand new CEO, Tim Cook with a nod to his HP roots. That’s right — printers.

incoming CEO Tim Cook called a meeting of shareholders and members of the press Thursday morning to announce that he envisioned printers as the company's future. "Laser, ink-jet, double-sided, color, black-and-white—the future of technology is in printers. I am absolutely convinced of that,"

The whole thing is worth a read. And a smile. And our desperate hopes that life never ends up imitating this satirical art.

TiPb Asks: How do you feel about Apple without Steve Jobs as CEO

Posted: 25 Aug 2011 11:39 AM PDT

TiPb Asks: What do you think about the new Apple?

We spend a lot of time on last night’s iPhone Live podcast talking about Apple now that Steve Jobs is no longer CEO — an Apple with Tim Cook at the reigns. Now we want to know what you, the TiPb Nation, think.

Apple no doubt has their product plan mapped out for a year or two ahead. Also, Steve Jobs is still there and reportedly still actively involved as Chairman of the Board, so no doubt they’ll be able to map their products out a few years more. But then what? Can Tim Cook an Apple’s executive team keep steering a ship with the most successful course in consumer electronics history? Post Steve Jobs, can they continue to turn out iPods and iPhones and iPads? Can they continue to say “no” when they need to and make absolutely perfect when they say “yes’? They can never be Steve Jobs, but can they continue to be as successful as Steve Jobs helped make them?

And what about competitors? Were they popping champagne corks last night at the news Steve Jobs wasn’t CEO of Apple anymore, and they no longer had to compete with him fully in place and in charge? Will they hope that Apple’s almost unbroken winning streak might just lose a little of its stride, or maybe even stumble? That there will be even more MobileMe’s and Ping’s without Steve Jobs at the helm? Even if nothing else has changed, has competitors morale been given a boost?

Taking over a company at the bottom is an incredible challenge but there’s almost no where to go but up (or insolvency, often quickly forgotten.) Taking over a company at the top of its game can be even more stressful because all eyes are on you and it feels like there’s nowhere to go but down. Will the media give Tim Cook a chance to breathe? Will analysts suddenly pounce on something that would have been normal even under Jobs?

Steve Jobs has always been a part of Apple and he always will, but how important a part was he to you, as an end user, as someone who has an iPhone or iPad or iPod? Does knowing Steve Jobs is no longer CEO change the way you feel about Apple? About your iPhone or iPad or iPod? About waiting for the next product launch or anticipating the next keynote?

It’s the first day of the rest of Apple’s history, and there are more questions than answers, but we’d love to hear what you, the TiPb Nation thinks, and whatever you so choose to share.

Daily Tip: How to stop the HDR camera mode storing two pictures in your Camera Roll

Posted: 25 Aug 2011 11:37 AM PDT

Annoyed by the Camera app storing double pictures in HDR mode and wondering how to stop it? Apple introduced an HDR (High Dynamic Range) setting to the iPhone 4 camera with iOS 4.1 and if used in the right circumstances can produce some much improved camera shots. Unfortunately, the way it works can cause a problem if your device is short of storage space. When HDR is turned on, the camera is actually taking four pictures, combining three of them into the HDR picture and saving the normal image in your camera roll. If you don't want to save the normal picture in your camera roll as well as the HDR version, there is simple way to stop it happening, read on and we will show you how.

  1. Open up Settings
  2. Click on Photos
  3. Right at the bottom there is a toggle switch, slide this to the off position

HDR 2

That’s it, if you take a picture with HDR turned on, only the combined HDR picture will appear in your camera roll. This will save on storage space and clutter in your camera roll.

Tips of the day will range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary. If you already know this tip, keep the link handy as a quick way to help a friend. If you have a tip of your own you'd like to suggest, add them to the comments or send them in to news@tipb.com. (If it's especially awesome and previously unknown to us, we'll even give ya a reward…)

The wrong yellow gradient

The wrong yellow gradient

Steve Jobs called up Google’s Vic Gundotra on a Sunday morning to get an urgent fix for something they were working on, and Gundotra was gracious enough to share the story on Google+.

“So Vic, we have an urgent issue, one that I need addressed right away. I’ve already assigned someone from my team to help you, and I hope you can fix this tomorrow” said Steve.

“I’ve been looking at the Google logo on the iPhone and I’m not happy with the icon. The second O in Google doesn’t have the right yellow gradient. It’s just wrong and I’m going to have Greg fix it tomorrow. Is that okay with you?”

Of course this was okay with me. A few minutes later on that Sunday I received an email from Steve with the subject “Icon Ambulance”. The email directed me to work with Greg Christie to fix the icon.

These are the eyes, and the attention to detail, Apple needs to fight to keep in place moving forward.

Logitech launching a folding keyboard and a joystick for iPad

Posted: 25 Aug 2011 07:00 AM PDT

Logitech iPad Keyboard

Well known peripheral manufacturer Logitech has announced a couple of new accessories for the iPad and iPad 2, a new take on the keyboard and a joystick for gaming. The keyboard fits to the rear of the iPad when not in use. When you need it, it folds out and reveals a full size QWERTY layout.

Sitting in a meeting or lecture? The Logitech Fold-Up Keyboard for iPad 2 is perfect for the office or classroom. Ready to use as soon as it's unfolded, it holds your tablet at an ideal angle for comfy typing. It features a full-size, Bluetooth keyboard and you won't lose your power mid-sentence because it charges over USB. It even turns itself off automatically when it's folded to save battery power. Closed, the keyboard rests securely underneath your tablet so you can just grab it and go to your next meeting or classroom.

On the other hand, the joystick resembles the Ten One Fling. If I was a Fling, I would be taking a long hard look at this one!

When you're ready to play, pull out your Logitech Joystick for iPad or iPad 2. This thumb-stick style game controller can be used with just about any game with an on-screen joystick or d-pad. The device attaches to your iPad with suction cups that are easy to apply and easy to remove. And the coiled spring provides force feedback that automatically returns the joystick to the center position. It's so easy to use, who needs to plug in a clunky, old-school controller ever again?

Both accessories are available to pre-order today in Europe at a price of €99.99 ($145) for the keyboard and €14.99 ($22) for the joystick. Both should be available in September. More images below:-
