New iPhone on October 7, no new iPad until spring 2012

Posted: 12 Aug 2011 12:26 PM PDT

Apple’s next generation iPhone, be it an iterative “iPhone 4S” or a completely revamped “iPhone 5” could go on sale October 7 in the US. That’s a Friday, which isn’t uncommon for iPhone launches. Originally it sounded more like a second week of October launch, more like October 14, but now it sounds like the first week. We’re still hearing that an “iPhone 4S”-style device, with improved processors and optics, is more likely than an all new design, but given the many and varied rumors, it’s impossible to tell for sure. It could even be that the “iPhone 4S” is the budget iPhone Apple supposedly completed work on just before WWDC 2011 (the iPhone nano, so to speak), and the “iPhone 5″ is the new high-end model. That could explain the supposedly conflicting rumors.

iPad 3, which Apple may have flirted with releasing this fall as well, sounds like it might have been put back on it’s traditional Spring schedule. Whether or not the component costs and yield rates of the rumored 2048×1536 Retina Display simply aren’t where Apple needs them to be yet are unknown.

Still, Apple can and will change their plans up to event day, so take all of this with a Cupertino-sized grain of salt. (And feel free to attribute any combination of “people” “sources” “familiar with” “knowledge of” and “little birdies” makes you happy.)

Daily Tip: How to remove your non-Facebook using friends’ contact information from Facebook

Daily Tip: How to remove your friends' contact information from Facebook

If you’ve synced your contacts with Facebook for iPhone, it’s possible that all the information from your iPhone Contacts.app are now copied over to Facebook’s servers. While that means you get Facebook profile pics when your Facebook using friends call you, it also may mean Facebook now has the personal numbers of your non-Facebook using friends, and that may not be okay with them, or with you. Luckily there’s a way to take back what’s yours (and theirs). Instructions after the break.

[BGR]

  1. Visit facebook.com from a PC and log in
  2. in the top-right corner of the screen, click on Account and then Edit Friends
  3. In the menu on the left side of the screen, click on Contacts
  4. Here, you will see that each and every one of your contacts in Address Book are listed along with their phone numbers… wipe the look of shock and disgust from your face
  5. On the right side of the screen, click on the "this page" link
  6. Follow the instructions on this page — you'll have to disable contact-sync in Facebook's mobile app if it's enabled — and click the Remove button

I don’t buy the shock and disgust part — at some point you hit the sync button, after all — but it is disturbing how quickly and opaquely big online companies can suck in other people’s personal info. And if you know any other cases of Facebook, or any social network, holding information you’d rather they not hold, let us know and tell us how to remove it!

Tips of the day will range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary. If you already know this tip, keep the link handy as a quick way to help a friend. If you have a tip of your own you’d like to suggest, add them to the comments or send them in to dailytips@tipb.com. (If it’s especially awesome and previously unknown to us, we’ll even give ya a reward…)

Meet iTableous, a white iPhone 4 inspired table with a raft of features [video]

Meet iTableous, a white iPhone 4 inspired table with a raft of features

iTableous is a PC and HDTV hidden away inside a giant white iPhone 4 case. Sounds simple, until you take a look at the work that has been put into making this table. It has been crafted out of the finest materials and painstakingly perfected over the last few months. The table belongs to its creator Benjamin Bachmeier.

The iTableous is not just a table of course, it has a Full HD TV with DVB-T freeview reception, integrated DVD player, dual boots Windows 7 and OS X, HD Camera, microphone and an iPhone dock connection. Unfortunately there is no touch screen, it has to be operated via a mouse and keyboard.

The whole project just floats my boat; I would really love something like this in my family room. It is so unique and well made! Take a look for yourself, there is a video after the break!

Apple to hold annual fall event on September 7? [Updated]

Posted: 12 Aug 2011 06:06 AM PDT

Apple Special Music Event 2010

Kodawarisan is reporting that Apple will hold it’s annual fall event — traditionally the Special Music Event that focuses on iTunes and iPod — on September 7, 2011. That’s a Wednesday and broadly consistent with Apple having held their annual fall event during the first week of September for the last few years now.

Typically Apple has introduced new versions of iPod touch at the event, along with the rest of the iPod family, and last year introduced the new, iOS-powered Apple TV 2 as well. This year, of course, where WWDC 2011 came and went with nary a new iPhone in sight, we’re all waiting to see if Apple uses the fall event to launch iPhone 5, or to at least show it off before an October release.

Apple being Apple, however, we likely won’t get official confirmation until invitations for the annual fall event get sent out only a few days before hand, and we won’t know if a new iPhone will be announced until Steve Jobs holds it up on stage.

Either way, with up to 5 new iOS devices in the pipeline, it could be an exciting event to say the least.

Until then we’ll keep casting the augurs and looking for signs.

UPDATED: Jim Dalrymple, whose sources are usually excellent, says there’s nothing to see here. No Apple event on September 7. (Though we presume there will be an Apple fall event at some point still, just not that point.) [The Loop]

Chinese authorities discover another 22 fake Apple stores in Kunming

Posted: 12 Aug 2011 04:32 AM PDT

Chinese authorities discover a further 22 fake Apple stores in Kunming

After the discovery of a fake Apple Store in the Chinese city of Kunming last month, Chinese authorities have now discovered that there are a total of 22 unauthorized Apple retailers operating in the same area.

China’s Administration for Industry and Commerce in the Yunnan provincial capital said the stores have been ordered to stop using Apple’s logo after Apple China accused them of unfair competition and violating its registered trademark, state media said on Thursday.
It is thought that the products being sold in the fake Apple Stores are in fact genuine Apple products; rather than fake products. What is more likely is that the Apple products are purchased outside of China and smuggled into the country. We saw an example of how this was being done earlier in the week. This would allow the resellers to avoid paying any taxes.

Daily Tip: How to access your purchased TV shows on iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, iTunes

Daily Tip: How to access your purchased TV shows on iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, iTunes

Curious how to access your previously purchased TV shows on your iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, Apple TV and iTunes on Mac and Windows? Well, if you live in the US, you’re in luck because, as part of their iCloud beta, Apple has enabled iOS and iTunes TV show re-downloads, and Apple TV streaming, and it works just like App Store downloads! To find out how, follow along after the break!

[Inside iTunes]

Here’s how to re-download or stream your existing iTunes TV show purchases to iOS, Mac or Windows:

On your computer, click on the Purchased link in the Quick Links section of the iTunes Store, and then click on the new TV Shows header. You can view your entire purchase history, or just what’s not currently on your computer. On iPhone and iPod touch, use the Purchased button in iTunes and tap TV shows for a list of your purchases. Tap “All TV Episodes” to navigate through your library by episode and show, and use the cloud download buttons to download what you want. On iPad use the Purchased tab on the lower right in iTunes and then the View button on the upper left and choose TV Shows to browse your library. As with the iPhone and iPod touch, use the cloud download buttons to download what you want.

On Apple TV, upgrade your software to 4.3 if you haven’t already (choose Menu, then General, then Update Software) and you’ll find a new Purchased button under TV Shows. Use it to access your list of previously purchased TV shows and watch them directly on your Apple TV. You can now also purchase TV shows directly from your Apple TV and then use the Purchased button on your other devices to watch it there as well.

Footnote: iTunes in the Cloud is available in beta, and requires iOS 4.3.3 on iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 (GSM model), iPod touch (3rd and 4th generation), iPad, or iPad 2, or a Mac or PC with iTunes 10.4 or later. Previous purchases may be unavailable if they are no longer in the iTunes Store, App Store, or iBookstore. Music and TV show features are available only in the U.S.

Yeah, hopefully Apple will fix that annoying “only in the U.S.” part and fast. In the meantime, if you have any other TV show, or video watching tips, let us know!

Tips of the day will range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary. If you already know this tip, keep the link handy as a quick way to help a friend. If you have a tip of your own you’d like to suggest, add them to the comments or send them in to dailytips@tipb.com.
