Epic already imagining iPhone 8 gaming

Mike Caps, president of Unreal Engine-powered, Infinity Blade swinging Epic Games, thinks that rather than next generation consoles from Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony, people should be keeping their eyes peeled on iPhone 8 gaming, circa 2015:

“So I think that’s the real challenge for us now, rather than worrying about the difference between a couple consoles and some order of magnitude, whether 3X or 4X. It’s about how do we deal with iPhone 8… if you watch where the gamers are going that’s where they are. Your iPhone 8 will probably plug into your TV, or better yet, wirelessly connect to your television set to give you that big screen gaming experience with good sound. So really, what’s the point of those next-gen consoles? It’s a very interesting situation to be looking at. That’s what we’re starting to think about more… not how do we scale from some Nintendo platform to some other future console,” he concluded.

In a clarification, Epic walked that back a bit, saying mobile won’t be replacing consoles any time soon — nor should they, in our opinion, following the same logic Steve Jobs used to describe mobile as the cars to traditional platform trucks.

But given how much better iPhone 4 is compared to the original iPhone 2G, it’s fair to ask what kind of games and experiences will be able to run on an iPhone 8 in a few years, and wonder if, and for how much of the market, that might just be no only enough, but preferable.

Manage milestones, deadlines and due dates with TimeSpan for iPhone, iPad

Posted: 05 Aug 2011 11:52 AM PDT

TimeSpan, by Partixel, is a productivity app for iPhone and iPad that allows you to keep track of important dates with countdowns.

Never again a sleepless night due to a forgotten milestone.

TimeSpan is a minimalist app that makes it easy and simple to manage all your milestones, deadlines and due dates just on your iPhone.

  • Beautiful & elegant user interface – TimeSpan has a beautiful styling to the last pixel. Everything has been designed with incredible attention to detail.
  • Intuitive & clean workflow – The workflow is completely self-explanatory. There are no unnecessary paths and everything behaves as expected.
  • Repeating Timespans – There are enough events that occur again and again, which should be managed in TimeSpan too. So that no more birthday or wedding anniversary is forgotten.
  • Remaining days badge – If you want, the remaining time of one event will be displayed as badge on the app icon. You always keep a very important date in sight, directly on your Springboard.
  • Notifications – The program can remind you of every event. Even if TimeSpan is not being started. You can choose between various options when configuring the reminder.
  • Universal – Use the same application on your iPad without additional cost. And enjoy all the advantages of a native iPad App.
  • Speed – Everything is ready designed for fast operation. Nothing will impede you. Creating and editing a TimeSpan is done in no time.
  • Localization – TimeSpan speaks English, German, French, Spanish. If you want to help with a missing language, just contact us.
  • Full landscape support – The entire app is also usable in landscape mode. So you can always use TimeSpan in your current most comfortable position.

I’ve played around with TimeSpan and I really like the UI. I love that it not only helps you keep manage important dates, but displays them as a countdown bar so that you have a way to visually see how close or far away a date is.

TimeSpan is available on the iPhone and iPad for $0.99. Screenshots after the break.

TiPb Asks: How do you set reminders on your iPhone or iPad?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2011 08:45 AM PDT

    iOS 5 reminders hero

With iOS 5 Apple is set to add new app to our iPhone, iPod touch and iPad home screens — Reminders! But… it’s 4 years later and some of us have had to figure out ways to remind ourselves about client meetings, kid pick-ups, and dates with significant others long before now.

We’ve used the built in Clock app and its alarms (on iPhone, where is it for iPad, Apple?!), we’ve used the Calendar App and its events, and we’ve used a bunch of App Store apps from the quick and easy Due to the full featured Todo to the dizzying OmniFocus to help make sure we don’t miss those important people, places, and moments in our lives.

What do you use right now to set reminders on your iPhone or iPad, and will you be ditching it now that Apple’s Reminders have finally joined the party?

AT&T to start forcibly changing Jailbreak tether users to tiered plans on August 11?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2011 01:08 AM PDT

Is August 11 the date when AT&T finally starts forcibly switching Jailbreak users who tether unofficially to limited, tiered plans? We knew AT&T was warning users tethering unofficially with apps like MyWi, and that they were threatening to take away their unlimited plans, but when they would start the process has always been a question.

The August 11 date comes from a 9to5Mac reader.

I was just informed that as of Thursday August 11th 2011, if you use MyWi or any tethering on the phone or using the phone as a modem, AT&T will automatically change ur unlimited plan to a 2Gb tethering plan for 45 dollars without the customers consent. This is for those who received emails or texts about the use of tethering without an AT&T tethering plan.
(We assume that the data plan actually being referred to in the quote above is the $45 DataPro 4GB plan which includes tethering.)

AT&T has confirmed that they will be forcibly switching users to the tiered plans, but not the date.  Has anyone else been given a date by AT&T?

Daily Tip: How to quickly navigate to the content you want in iTunes

Daily Tip: How to quickly navigate to the content you want in iTunes

Curious how to quickly get to specific section or category of content in iTunes for Windows or Mac? Luckily Apple has provided convenient drop-down menus for all the major sections like Music, Movies, TV Shows, App Store, Books, Podcasts, iTunes U, and, um… Ping.

In the iTunes Store, you can quickly and easily go from anywhere in the store directly to a particular media type, genre, or special feature by using the top navigation bar. Hovering your pointer over the titles which are always present at the top of the iTunes Store window causes downward pointing triangles to appear next to each media type. Click one and you’ll see a list of helpful links related to that media type which you can use to navigate to what you’re interested in — Jazz in Music perhaps, Action & Adventure in Movies, Comedy in the TV Store, Games in the App Store, and more.

You can use this tip to quickly get more games for your iPhone or iPad, or to jump right to the technology section in podcasts for iPhone Live, iPad Live, and all our other awesome shows.
