US starts to fine people for texting while walking on city streets

Posted: 20 Jul 2011 04:36 PM PDT

Certain cities in the US have started fining walkers on the streets if they are caught texting on their iPhone (or other mobile devices). If you have ever walked down a street while composing a short email or text message, you know how distracting it can be and how unaware you are of where you are and what is going on around you. This is leading to more and more accidents and the new system of fines is meant to make you more aware of the dangers.

Earlier this year a woman from Pennsylvania was caught on video whilst walking through a shopping center. She was so engrossed in typing out her message that she fell right into a water feature. Yes this example was quite funny however it could have been a whole lot worse.

Pennsylvania is now looking at putting an end to these sorts of incidents and is introducing a programme called "Give Respect, Get Respect". This programme covers distracted drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. Mayor Nutter denied that offenders would automatically be fined at first but did admit that violators would be reminded and warned of their surroundings and potential dangers. In Rexburgh, Idaho fines are already in place for texting while walking. Anyone found walking across a street while texting is immediately fined $50.

I think this really is a case or using your common sense but unfortunately it doesn’t always work that way. Hopefully we will see future iPhones with better voice integration enabling us to talk to send text messages rather than typing. You could always just use the Email ‘n Walk app which uses the iPhone's camera to show you what is in front of you; as you type your text. This won't save you from a fine, but may stop you falling in that fountain or in front of a fast moving vehicle!

iPad 2 or… MacBook Air 2?

Posted: 20 Jul 2011 10:02 AM PDT

Last year it was hard enough to decide between the starting-at-$499 original iPad on iOS 3.2 and the starting-at-$999 new MacBook Air on OS X Snow Leopard, but now we have iPad 2 on iOS 4.3 (soon to be iOS 5! and the just-released MacBook Air 2 on OS X Lion… decisions, decisions! (Never mind a possible Retina Display iPad 2 Pro/iPad 3 on the horizon!)

Have you been waiting and debating between the two? If so, which are you getting and why? Vote in the poll above and give us the details in the comments below!

Apple introduces new MacBook Airs, other stuff

Apple introduces new MacBook Airs, other stuff

To coincide with the release of Mac OS X Lion, Apple has also released a new generation of MacBook Airs, Mac Minis, and LED displays (now dubbed Thunderbolt displays). The most interesting to us, of course, is the MacBook Air, particularly the 11-inch version which is a real — if more expensive — rival to the iPad.

Now with more processing power, courtesy of Intel’s Core i5 or Core i7 (Sandybridge) processor, a high speed Thunderbolt I/O port, and a backlit keyboard(?!), it makes an already compelling alternative even more so. (If rumors of an early iPad 2 Pro or iPad 3 turn out to be true, it could make the decision even harder.)

"Portable, affordable and powerful, MacBook Air is the ultimate everyday notebook," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. "MacBook Air features our most advanced technology and is an ideal match for Lion, especially with its new Multi-Touch gestures, full-screen apps, Mission Control and Mac App Store."

Mac Mini with the new chips and port make a good if expensive home theater PC even more powerful and (eventually) flexible, while the new LED displays can be chained together to turn your desktop into a NASA-style control center.

"Mac mini delivers the speed and expandability that makes it perfect for the desktop, living room or office," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. "With faster processors, more powerful graphics and Thunderbolt in an incredibly compact, aluminum design, the new Mac mini is more versatile than ever."

"The Apple Thunderbolt Display is the ultimate docking station for your Mac notebook," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. "With just one cable, users can dock with their new display and connect to high performance peripherals, network connections and audio devices."

Anyone going to pick up a new Air?

Mac OS X Lion is here!

Posted: 20 Jul 2011 05:31 AM PDT

Mac OS X Lion arrives today

Mac OS X 10.7 Lion is here. OS X, the desktop counterpart to Apple’s mobile iOS, has taken iPad innovation “Back to the Mac” with this release, including the iPad home screen-like LaunchPad for app management, automatic save and resume, etc.

"Lion is the best version of OS X yet, and we're thrilled that users around the world can download it starting today," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. "Lion makes upgrading a Mac easier than ever before; just launch the Mac App Store, buy Lion with your iTunes account, and the download and install process will begin automatically."

It’s also the first time a major Mac OS X version will be distributed online, through the Mac App Store. Gigabytes of download will be an interesting challenge for those with multiple machines, but especially for those with slower internet connections or restricted bandwidth. (Never mind what the launch day rush might do to the internet in general — Apple servers have gone down during iOS releases in the early days.)

UPDATE: Apple has announced that Lion will be available “later this August” on a USB thumb drive for $69.

All that aside, we welcome our Mac OS X cousins to the goodness we’ve been enjoying for a while now in iOS. Who’s getting it?
