Daily tip: How to use iOS 5 AirPlay mirroring for FaceTime

Developer interested in trying out iOS 5‘s new AirPlay mirroring for FaceTime on your iPad 2 and Apple TV? It’s a great way to take personal video calls between family or business associates and make them group calls that everyone can engage in. And we’ll show you how, after the break!

You need to make sure you have an iPad 2 and Apple TV both on iOS 5 beta 3. If you’re a developer, you can grab all the software you need via Apple’s developer portal. If you haven’t joined already, here’s how to become a paid member.

Remember, only iPad 2 can do AirPlay Mirroring. You can call your iPad 2 from an iPhone 4 or iPod touch 4, but you can’t mirror those devices’ display. Only the iPad 2 display.

Note: Before you install, make sure your UDIDs are registered with Apple. You might not be able to activate your devices if your UDIDs aren’t properly registered.

  1. Install iOS 5 beta 2 on your iPad 2. Xcode is always recommended but you can install using iTunes 10.5 as well. Here’s how to install iOS betas if you need step by steps.
  2. Install iOS 5 beta on your Apple TV. You’ll need to tether it to your computer using a USB to micro USB cable. Again, Xcode is recommended.
  3. Make sure both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network
  4. Open FaceTime on iPad 2. (Or, conversely, wait for someone to call you on FaceTime)
  5. Double click the Home button to bring up the Fast App Switcher.
  6. Swipe from left to right to get to the AirPlay button
  7. Tap AirPlay and select Apple TV as the source.
  8. Toggle Mirroring to On

That’s it, your FaceTime call should now be up, and usable, on the big screen!

Remember, you can also mirror apps and games with iOS 5, so when your FaceTime call ends, launch Plants vs. Zombies or OmniGraffle and keep on enjoying the big screen fun.

Tips of the day will range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary. If you already know this tip, keep the link handy as a quick way to help a friend. iUsers brings multiple user accounts to the iPad [jailbreak]

    Posted: 14 Jul 2011 03:30 PM PDT

iUsers is a new jailbreak tweak that enables an iPad to have multiple user accounts. If you share your iPad with other people in your home, this jailbreak tweak could be just what you have been waiting for.

Each user that has access to your iPad can now have a separate account with their own log in passcode, separate home screens, different apps and log in credentials. Pedro Franceschi is the man to thank for this awesome looking tweak. He has even put together a short video showing how it all works; it looks really well put together and a highly useful add on. The iPad does have to go through a short reboot cycle when switching accounts. It doesn’t seem to take very long to do it, so it’s not really a deal breaker.

If you want to give this one a go, you will need to add http://cydia.iblogeek.com/ as an additional repository in your Cydia settings. Once you have done that, simply search for iUsers.

Take a look at iUsers in action after the break!

iPad 3 parts leak in Taiwan

iPad 3 parts leak in Taiwan

Apple.pro, which has a good track record with such things, has posted a couple pictures of what they say are iPad 3 parts.

We pretty much know an iPad 3 is coming at some point, and we know it will have parts, but for pre-release techno-fetishists and gadget geeks like us, this as close to p0rn as we can post. Enjoy.

(And yeah, Liv might be in some trouble…)

Spotify for iPhone hits the US App Store

    Posted: 14 Jul 2011 08:10 AM PDT

Spotify for iPhone has finally hit the US App Store.

Stream millions of tracks from thousands of albums and artists to your iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. Take your existing Spotify playlists with you on the go – listen to them during your commute, in the gym or on a flight. With 'Offline mode' you can listen even when no connection is available. Wirelessly sync your local files to your phone to merge your catalogue with ours, no cables required! Download and get started directly from your mobile.

    • Wirelessly sync your local files to your phone
    • Create and sync playlists
    • Receive music from friends via the inbox
    • Star your favourite tracks
    • Scrobble tracks to Last.fm
    • Access to over 13 million tracks from our catalogue
    • Offline playlists – listen to music with no mobile connection and avoid using your data allowance

Personally, I’ll be sticking with iTunes and iCloud for my music streaming needs, but I’m old school and actually enjoy listening to my local radio. However, Spotify is a great alternative to iTunes and offers features that Apple does not. Will you be jumping ship?

Spotify is available for Free for iPhone and requires a free Spotify account. There are also premium and unlimited accounts available starting at $4.99 per month.

Google releases Photovine for iPhone, a photo sharing app with a strange twist

    Posted: 14 Jul 2011 08:09 AM PDT

Google has released another photo sharing app for the iPhone, this one called Photovine and actually made by Slide. Slide was acquired by Google some time last year.

Watching the video it appears that it is aimed at some sort of photo word association type game. One person starts the photo conversation with a picture then friends add other photos with a similar theme. It is all a little bit strange if you ask me!

What’s also hard to figure out is where it fits in with Google’s other photo sharing services, like Picasa, Google+, and Pool Party. When do you use one rather than the other? Is it variety or lack of focus?
