The iPhone Blog

Welcome to the new TiPb Forums!

Posted: 25 Jun 2011 04:32 PM PDT

As most of our TiPb Forums regulars probably noticed, we’ve been moving things around on a fairly massive scale lately. Basically, we’re going from a nice home in the burbs to a big party house in the hills. That’s because you deserve more — more space to play and more features to play with.

We’ve done some work on the blogs already and started a new Mobile Nations podcast, so it was about time we gave the forums some love.

First of all we’re bringing things more in line with the other Smartphone Experts communities. Many of you use multiple platforms and several devices now and as you move through our network we want you to feel at home no matter which site you’re on. That means you’ll see the same types of device forums on TiPb now that you’ve always enjoyed on Android Central, CrackBerry.com, PreCentral.net, etc.

It also means, like any move to bigger digs, some of the rooms will be a little empty for a while. We can only stretch the furniture so far! We’d love you to help us with the decor, though, so jump in, start some threads, and get posting. There will be some great contests coming up, and it just might be a good idea to keep busy now… hint. hint.

New features are also coming, along with a fresh coat of paint. Again, we’ve got a lot of great new stuff in the pipeline and we can’t wait to show it to you.

Huge thanks to the SPE team, Kevin, Tom, Marcus, Steph, and Cory, and to Jeremy and the TiPb Forum mods for all the help, front and back of house. Jeremy is going to introduce some of the new forums, features, and topics to you in the coming weeks, but for now, head on over to the all new, all awesome TiPb Forums and let us know what you think.

App for That: How to set up reminders to take medication

Posted: 25 Jun 2011 11:26 AM PDT

There are hundreds of thousands of iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad apps for just about everything — so how come the one you need, the one you know just has to be there, is so hard to find? Enter TiPb’s new weekly feature where staff and readers alike sort through the App Store and help you find just the right App for That. This week, Colin asks:

I have need of an app that will alert me to take my medication. More specifically, I need to an app that will remind me of a medication that I need to take every 72 hours.

Sure, the built in alarm in the iPhone’s clock app will work for many medication reminders, but it does not have an option to set a repeating alarm for every 3 days. To see our solution for Colin, follow along after the break!

RxmindMe [Free - iTunes link] is a great little app designed for setting alarms that remind you to take your medication and they boast of being able to handle the most complicated of reminders.

This app is more than just an alert system, however. RxmindMe allows you to store a massive list of medications and prescriptions including photos, type of medication, dosage, and more. Additionally, the entire FDA Drug Database is stored in the app so that you don’t have to manually enter everything about all your medications.

RxmindMe supports the following types of reminders: every “X” number of days (perfect for Colin), hourly, daily, on specific dates, weekly, on a particular day of the month, as needed, on a particular week of a month, or even just recording pills you took out of the blue. So if you have a complicated prescription schedule, RxmindMe has got you covered!

Anyone else have any App for That suggestions for Colin? Let him — and all of us — know in the comments.

Having trouble finding what you need in the app store? Send us an email to iosapps@tipb.com and let us know what you’re looking for, and we’ll do our best to find you just the right App for That!

TiPb Picks of the Week

Posted: 25 Jun 2011 10:39 AM PDT

TiPb.com Picks of the Week

Every week a few of us from team TiPb will bring you our current favorite, most fun and useful App Store apps, WebApps, jailbreak apps, even the occasional accessory, web site, or desktop app if the mood strikes us. As long as they're iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch related, they're fair game.

To see what we picked, and to tell us your pick, follow on after the break!

Agenda – @reneritchie

Agenda is a beautiful, usable, sanity restoring calendaring alternative from App Savvy. I’ve been beta testing it since WWDC, so I’ve had the opportunity to spend some time with it and I’m enjoying it quite a bit.

Agenda is elegantly black and white, and the default list view presents large dates on the left and spacious event listings on the right. You scroll dates with a flick, and the next update will even bring you back to today with a tap of the title bar. A left arrow at the bottom will back you into a month view, where color coded dots give quality and quantity to your appointments. Left again is a six-month view for easy date lookup and month switching. A right arrow will move you to day view. Right again will take you to a single event view. You can scroll both month and day views as well, with just a hint of elasticity to keep you from doing it unintentionally. You can also swipe horizontally between views, which has a similar tension and I prefer.

So basically, each level back gives you a higher viewer, each level forward a more granular view, with up and down providing the timeline. The cross navigation metaphor works really well in this context.

Outside Agenda, on the home screen, today’s date is displayed using the notification badge work around. It’s not ideal but it’s all Apple currently allows and does give glance-ability to the icon.

There’s a bit of a spartan, Windows Phone Metro UI vibe at work in Agenda, but unlike Panorama, none of the text is cut off which may remove the hint of information beyond the screen but prevents my typographer from cringing, so it’s a fair trade. Overall, it looks great.

If Apple’s built in Calendar app is too loud or too much and you want a more tastefully sedate way to manage your schedule, give Agenda a try. It just might become your new go-to event viewer.

CrazyRemote Pro – @Alli_Flowers

It’s true, I’ve gone Mac. But there are still a lot of things I need on my pc, and more often than not – I need them when I’m not home. So I rely on CrazyRemote Pro, which allows me to use my iPhone to take total control of my pc from anywhere in the world.

With CrazyRemote Pro, I can start any app on my pc, email myself that document that I totally forgot about, or double check how an app is supposed to work on a pc. One of the fun things I can do with CrazyRemote Pro is turn on the webcam to see what’s going on at home while I’m out. I can also view my home surveillance system – which doesn’t have an iPhone app.

There is no end to what I can do on my pc – from my iPhone. So if you’re still tied to a pc for many things, give CrazyRemote a try – light version also available.

Fragger – @skeetobite

My pick of the week is a fun game called Fragger. The game seem to be somewhat similar to Angry Birds, but instead of throwing birds you are throwing grenades. Your goal is to frag each of the opponents using a limited number of grenades. In some cases, you simply have to adjust the angle and strength of your throw to reach the target. In other case, it almost takes on a puzzle like feel as you have to use grenades to destroy or move objects to make the target accessible. Just like some other seemingly simple concept games, this game is highly addictive – I spent all week playing the last few levels. There are some free versions as well as an HD version for the iPad. There are over 300 levels, so the enjoyment of destruction should last for quite some time.

Hanging with Friends – @iMuggle

I’ve always been a big fan of word games. Hanging with friends has been keeping me pretty entertained. It was created by the same developers of Words With Friends (another one of my favorites).

Hanging with Friends is simply a comical spin off of hangman. You make a word and your opponent has so many strikes to guess it. If they miss it, they lose a balloon and get lowered closer to the lava. Once someone loses all their balloons, the game is over and they lose.

There is a free version and a paid version. The paid version just doesn’t contain ads.

Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing – @chrisoldroyd

Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing was released on Thursday; but it is already my favorite game. It is a fantastic game to waste a few minutes flying round a track in a strange looking kart firing missiles and dodging your opponents traps. The game has 10 characters and various modes of transport to choose from. These include cars, monster trucks, bikes, planes and even bananas! There are 25 missions to complete and three Grand Prix Cups. You can challenge your friends as long as they are within Bluetooth connectivity distance or play online with up to three friends with Game Center.

The game was an absolute steal at $1.99 but that offer has expired. It will now cost you $4.99; but it is still worth every cent! It is also a universal binary so you can play it on your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad in all its glory!

[$4.99 - iTunes link]

Speedtest.net Mobile Speed Test – @andrewwray

Speedtest.net has always been the preferred bandwidth test for me, and they also have a great iPhone app that offers many of the features included on the website. The animations are nice and fluid giving your a rich and enjoyable experience, and up until now I didn’t think testing my bandwidth could actually be considered ‘fun’.

The app lets you choose from a list of surrounding servers to get the best results, or picks the best server for you based on ping time. I’ve had to use this app quite a bit lately because of the trouble we’ve had with our internet provider, and it’s never failed to impress with its style and quick results. Although it doesn’t let you login for a fully personalized experience, the app does a great job as a bandwidth test and I haven’t seen anything that looks as good — give it a try!

[Free - iTunes link]

Banana TV – @coldfusion2018 (Reader’s Choice)

Banana TV is a great little Mac application for those people (like me) who dont have an Apple TV, but do have a Mac that they would like to Airplay to. At the moment, Airplay doesn’t support streaming to a Mac, but with Banana TV installed on my iMac, I am able to stream from the video app, YouTube app and the camera roll in the Photo app. This means that I can watch all that content fullscreen just using my local WIFI network.

Banana TV is a fantastic application and fills a hole until Apple allows us to Airplay to Macs.

[$7.99 - Banana TV]

Your pick?

You're part of the team as well, so we will be choosing one reader to make a submission each week! Just look for the announcement on twitter or our Facebook page each weekend for a chance to be picked! In the meantime, jump into the comments and let us know your pick of the week!

Skype for iPad coming soon!

Posted: 24 Jun 2011 07:22 PM PDT

Skype for iPad coming soon!

Skype representative, Rick Osterloh, has confirmed to TUAW that Skype for iPad will be coming soon. A video of the new iPad app, was leaked onto the internet this morning, on Skype’s official YouTube channel but was quickly made private. Luckily, some people managed to successfully record a screen capture of the video before it was taken down.

The app will let users to chat and make calls via wifi and 3G, including video calls on the iPad 2. Osterloh said that, while they were fine with the iPhone app on the original iPad, the new cameras on the iPad 2 are what made a dedicated iPad app “super compelling”.

No release date has been announced yet, but we can speculate that it will be soon.

See the leaked video (sorry, no audio) after the break. What do you think of the Skype for iPad app? Do you need Skype on your iPad?

Daily tip: How to use iOS 5 AirPlay mirroring for iPad 2 and Apple TV

Developer interested in trying out iOS 5‘s new AirPlay mirroring on iPad 2 and Apple TV? You need to have a few things in place, but once you do, you can happily start testing the next casual game sensation out on the big screen! We’ll show you how, after the break!

iOS 5 finally brings full on, full screen (er… boxed screen!), full app mirroring from iPad 2 to Apple TV. You’ll need iOS 5 for both, and iTunes 10.5 beta as well. You can get them via Apple’s developer portal. If you haven’t joined already, here’s how to become a paid member.

NOTE: Before you install, make sure your UDIDs are registered with Apple. You might not be able to activate your devices if your UDIDs aren’t properly registered.

  1. Install iOS 5 beta on your iPad 2. Xcode is always recommended but you can install using iTunes 10.5 as well. Here’s how to install iOS betas if you need step by steps.
  2. Install iOS 5 beta on your Apple TV. You’ll need to tether it to your computer using a USB to micro USB cable. Again, Xcode is recommended.
  3. Make sure both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network
  4. Open an app on iPad 2. Games are the most fun.
  5. Double click the Home button to bring up the Fast App Switcher.
  6. Swipe from left to right to get to the AirPlay button
  7. Tap AirPlay and select Apple TV as the source.
  8. Toggle Mirroring to On

That’s it, your app or game should now be up, and usable, on the big screen! Let us know how it works for you!
