Twitter announces new search, their own photo hosting Posted: 01 Jun 2011 03:11 PM PDT Twitter today announced improved search, and first-party (i.e. Twitter’s own) image hosting service.
The image hosting is an even bigger deal, given the someone dubious licensing terms some third party hosts have been putting in place (taking ownership of users’ photos as their own).
So expect updates for Twitter for iPhone and Twitter for iPad soon to take advantage of these new features… and perhaps some bigger announcements come the WWDC keynote on Monday… Video after the break!

BodyGuardz Armor Carbon Fiber for iPad 2 – accessory review Posted: 01 Jun 2011 10:35 AM PDT The BodyGuardz Armor Carbon Fiber for iPad 2 is a skin that sticks to the aluminum black to give some texture and protect from scrapes and abrasions. They’re not the same as the thin, clear BodyGuardz films we’ve shown you how to apply before, and are actually even easier to apply. (Check out the video below to see just how easy.) Now that I’ve been using it for a week, how do I like it? Am I keeping it? Read on to find out!
Allow me to quote myself from my previous review on the BodyGuardz Armor for iPhone 4:
When it comes to looks, I think BodyGuardz is even hotter on iPad 2 than on iPhone. The large surface really makes the texture stand out, especially as light hits the curved back. You still can’t see the Apple logo under the dark gray sticker, but that’s only going to be a deal breaker for the biggest Apple fans. And yes, I have a pink SmartCover so once again, best there is, best there was, and best there ever will be color combination! (For those who asked, the anti-glare screen protector doesn’t interfere with the SmartCover magnets at all. It works great!) With my iPhone, I really liked the grip of the BodyGuardz Armor since the glass would often slip and slide off chairs and sofas. The same applied to the iPad 2. I can put it down on the armrest of my movie chair, get myself some more popcorn, and not have to worry about it taking a dive to the floor. Apple’s backs look great, but they give me a heart attack at times. With the Armor, I feel much safer. Unlike the iPhone version, there are no side stickers… because iPad 2 has almost no sides. I didn’t like the sides on my iPhone and am not using them any more, so this is fine for me. Bottom line, I’m liking it and still using it. Great protection, great grip, and great looks, all with next to no added bulk or weight. Check out the BodyGuardz Armor Carbon Fiber for iPad 2, available from the TiPb iPhone 4 Accessory Store. Pros

Could Twitter become the iPhone’s BBM? Posted: 01 Jun 2011 08:28 AM PDT BBM is one of the most compelling aspects of the BlackBerry experience — could Apple be set to bring their own instant messaging service to iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad… via Twitter? MG Siegler said yesterday that Apple was going to be including Twitter image posting in iOS 5 and John Gruber added that the integration could be much broader, and at the system level. Then Siegler fired back:
The big problem with BBM is that, so far, it’s locked to the BlackBerry platform. Twitter is cross platform. Sure, it’s still proprietary, like Whatsapp, Kik, and other BBM alternatives, but the user base is huge. Dieter and I spoke about this, and there are still a lot of questions, of course. Twitter has had problems with scaling and being the BBM of iOS would be a lot of scale. Could Apple’s Data Center help with that? Also, Twitter doesn’t currently have group messages. Would they need them? Would partnering with Apple help Twitter bring those features to market faster? Would it then roll out across other platforms, paving the way for a real, universal communications protocol? So yeah, there are a lot of questions, but as Siegler points out, Twitter is free, while SMS isn’t. That makes for a rather elegant end run around carriers and their obscene SMS prices. Apple has relied on Google for Maps, YouTube, and search in the past. Could they rely on Twitter for text communications in the future? Would you want them to? Apple’s new data center magically appears on Google Earth and Maps Posted: 01 Jun 2011 06:41 AM PDT Apple's new data center can now be seen on Google Earth and Maps, where until yesterday it only showed woods and farmland with a driveway that ended in the middle of a field. Now you can see the data center in all its glory. It seems to be quite a coincidence that the data center has now appeared after Apple announced that iCloud would be shown off at WWDC next week. We assume that this huge data center will be the source of all the iCloud goodness that we will find out about on Monday coming. Remember, we will be covering all the events as they unfold. If you want to have a look at the data center for yourself, just type in 6081 Startown Road, Maiden NC into your Google Maps search box! [Fortune]

iPad 3 component suppliers gain Apple certification for 2012 release Posted: 01 Jun 2011 05:43 AM PDT According to Digitimes, Apple has already begun the certifying process of components for the next generation iPad 3. Some have already gained certification such as Radiant Opto-Electronics for LED backlight units. Taiwan-based component makers for backlight modules and light bars have received certification from Apple, however, the certification of panels is still in progress, added industry sources. South-Korea based panel firms such Samsung and LG Display have been panel suppliers for Apple. The certification of panels from Taiwan-based Chimei Innolux is nearly done.According to Digitime's sources — which are usually hit and miss — the iPad 3 will be released in 2012 which would coincide with the usual, annual release cycle for iPads. There had been earlier rumors that Apple would release a new iPad later this year however this now appears to be false. Digitimes also pours water on the rising flames of rumor that AMOLED displays may be used on the iPad 3. Industry sources said that this is unlikely to happen and the iPad 3 will still have a 9.7-inch LCD panel.

More federal agencies choosing iPhone, iPad over Blackberry and traditional computing Posted: 01 Jun 2011 05:42 AM PDT President Obama has started to relax some of the technology use policies within the government, as more and more federal workers have opted to use the iPhone and iPad in place of devices like the Blackberry and PC.
The list of supporting government agencies goes on and on. Federal workers have found they’re more mobile and less tied down when using devices like the iPad instead of being strapped to a desktop PC — some even preferring the tablet over working on a standard laptop computer. Even Obama, a longtime CrackBerry user, now totes around an iPad for productivity and connectivity, suggesting a driving force not only from front-line workers, but also from top officials. Any corporate or federal workers seeing these changes in the workplace?
