Samsung ordered to show Apple unreleased phones, tablets Posted: 24 May 2011 01:00 PM PDT As part of Apple’s ongoing look-and-feel — aka copycat — lawsuit against Samsung, Judge Lucy Koh has ordered Samsung to cough up some of the unreleased, but allegedly infringing devices to Apple’s outside council for investigation.
The devices in question are Galaxy S2, Galaxy Tab 8.9, Galaxy Tab 10.1, Infuse 4G, and Droid Charge. Our question — why couldn’t Apple just read Android Central like everyone else? Steve Jobs to Keynote WWDC 2011… or not? [updated] Posted: 24 May 2011 08:13 AM PDT According to GigaOm, Apple has confirmed Steve Jobs will be giving the Keynote presentation at WWDC 2011, despite being on limited duty during his third medical leave. For the last 3 years, Apple has introduced new iPhone hardware (from the iPhone 3G to last year’s iPhone 4 at WWDC, however, unofficial word is that there’ll be no new iPhone until the fall this year. Since, also unlike previous years, there was no iOS preview event this spring, an iOS 5 announcement and probable beta release will likely be our high point. (There will no doubt also be Mac OS X Lion news as well.) iOS 5 is rumored to be a big update for Apple, everything from a new leap to the cloud to a substantial re-write, so it’ll be great to see Steve Jobs doing what he does better than anyone else in the industry — running the show. What do you want to see? Note: We can’t find the official announcement they refer to… yet. Make of that what you will. UPDATE: GigaOM seems to have the date wrong as well, June 7th was the 2010 keynote. [@BenjaminZEMayo] Could be a misfire on their part. Still looking into it. UPDATE 2: GigaOm misfired. Apple hasn’t yet announced the Keynote speaker for WWDC 2011. Likely a miscommunication based on last year’s WWDC announcement. [The Loop] [GigaOm] Steve Jobs to Keynote WWDC 2011… or not? Possible picture of the iPhone 5 rear panel? Posted: 24 May 2011 04:39 AM PDT Hot on the heels of the obligatory iPhone 5 case leak, we now have a supposed picture of the back panel of the next iPhone with the same LED Flash placement on the opposite corner. The image is obviously unverified but it does match up with both the recent case leak and some supposed next generation camera parts. Two holes are clearly visible, one for the camera on the left and one for the flash on the right. This of course could well be a Photoshop job based on the recent case pictures however it is not unusual for these types of images to leak out. What do you think, real, fake, or really fake?

Head of France Telecom confirms smaller SIM card coming, next iPhone to be smaller, thinner? Posted: 24 May 2011 04:37 AM PDT The head of France Telecom (which is the parent company of iPhone carrier Orange), Stéphane Richard, talking in San Francisco last week, confirmed that Apple would introduce an even smaller SIM card in the future. He also went on to confirm that Apple did want to introduce a device without the need for a SIM card at all. As you probably know, Apple has been working for years on reducing the size of SIM cards because they need space in the phone. They even thought about a device without any SIM card, that is what is known as the e-SIM project. All of us told them it was a bad idea because the SIM card is a critical piece of the security and authentication process. It would be very difficult for a telco or carrier to manage the customer relationship. We are going to work with them in order to standardize a new format of SIM which takes into accout our needs with security and authentication and also is compatible with their wishes in terms of size. The only obvious reason for the change in SIM card size is saving space in a future iPhone. Mr Richard believes this to be the case too. I understood that the next iPhone would be smaller and thinner and they are definitely seeking some space. We don't know for sure at this point if he has any direct knowledge of Apple’s plans or is just making assumptions, and if he is referring to the next iPhone or a model for 2012, or the mythical iPhone nano. Either way it looks increasingly likely that we will have to deal with another SIM card standard. Those of us that like to change SIM cards and swap phones are going to have more headaches to deal with. What do you think, is the space saving worth it, and how much smaller can they go?

Daily Tip: How to unfriend someone on Facebook Posted: 23 May 2011 08:15 PM PDT You know who they are — the person you kinda sorta know, acquaintance of an acquaintance type of thing — and they keep inviting you to events in other countries, adding you to groups you couldn’t care any less about, and spamming your wall with their virus links, and you’re just dying to know how to unfriend them. Well, rest easy. It’s not rude. It’s not anti-social. It’s not you — it’s them. They’re unfriendable. And it’s Facebook, with their “invite all”, “add to group”, and other easy-to-abuse buttons. You’re not breaking any covenants that ought not be broken. You’re simply restoring your Facebook sanity. And we’re going to help you… after the break.
Luckily you can unfriend just such a person using the Facebook for iPhone app, or on the web. Since we’re an iPhone blog, we’ll stick with the iPhone app for now.
That’s it! The guilty party has been right and properly unfriended and you can go on with a cleaner, less stressful Facebook experience. (Or at least as much as is possible.) Have any other Facebook tips for us? Drop them in the comments! Note: No Seth Cliffords were actually unfriended during the making of this tip. Tips of the day will range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary. If you already know this tip, keep the link handy as a quick way to help a friend. If you have a tip of your own you’d like to suggest, add them to the comments or send them in to news@tipb.com.
