Daily tip: How to turn off location data tracking on iPhone 3G, original iPhone

Posted: 20 May 2011 05:32 PM PDT

Have an iPhone 3G or original iPhone, no longer getting iOS updates from Apple, and wondering how to turn off location data tracking? Apple recently fixed the tracking issue in iOS 4.3.3 but devices that haven’t been updated were left out in the cold. While some people argue that jailbreak may make your device more vulnerable, there have been a few instances where jailbreaking closed exploits before Apple did.

Jailbreak dev Ryan Petrich has again came through with untrackerd. Anyone running an iPhone 3G (which stopped getting updates with iOS 4.2) or original iPhone (which maxed out at iOS 3.1.3) can install it and not worry about data tracking. Hit the jump for a quick step by step!

  1. Jailbreak your iPhone if you haven’t already.
  2. Open Cydia and tap on Search.
  3. Type in “untrackerd”.
  4. Install untrackerd.
  5. You’re done! It simply runs a script in the background that will dump tracking information.

Again, anyone with an iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4 running iOS 4.3.3 does not need to use untrackerd as Apple addressed the issue in that firmware update. This is simply useful for those folks with an iPhone 3G or earlier that won’t receive the fix. If you have an iPhone 3G or first gen, try it out and let us know if you have issues in our TiPb Jailbreak forums or in the comments below!

Tips of the day will range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary. If you already know this tip, keep the link handy as a quick way to help a friend. If you have a tip of your own you’d like to suggest, add them to the comments or send them in to news@tipb.com. (If it’s especially awesome and previously unknown to us, we’ll even give ya a reward…)

Apple still needs music publishers on board for iTunes cloud streaming service

Posted: 20 May 2011 02:38 PM PDT

Peter Kafka over at All Things Digital reports that Apple has yet another hurdle to overcome before iTunes cloud streaming can become a reality — getting music publishers to sign off. Although Apple has been negotiating and finalizing deals with the music labels, including Sony now, that’s apparently not enough.

While Apple came to terms with Warner Music and EMI Music weeks ago, and has now struck a deal with Sony Music, industry sources tell me the company doesn't have agreements with the labels' associated publishing companies–Warner/Chappell, EMI Music Publishing and Sony/ATV. The deal Apple is about to sign with Universal also won't include publishing, I'm told.

Kafka explains how labels and publishers alike both receive compensation from digital sales, which is why Apple needs to take additional steps for securing deals with publishers before going live.

According to the report, this additional obstacle shouldn’t have any real impact on Apple rolling out their cloud streaming service — which is suspected to be announced at WWDC alongside iOS 5 — because labels and publishers are essentially on the same page. Apple simply started negotiations with the labels first because those agreements were considered to be the more difficult arrangements to secure over publisher contracts.

Do you think Apple will have any trouble getting publishers to agree? And do you find who owns which rights to what music and how it can be sold or streamed as confusing as we do?

EFF: Apple should defend developers in face of patent threats

Posted: 20 May 2011 12:47 PM PDT

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has called on Apple to be developers’ knight in shining armor in face of threats from patent trolls. As TiPb covered in our special edition iPhone Live podcast with FOSS Patent’s Florian Mueller, iOS developers including James Thomson of PCalc and the Iconfactory, makers of Twitterrific have received letters from patent holding company, Lodsys, asking for licensing fees for the use of in-app purchases for in-app upgrades. The EFF sees that position as untenable:

This is a problem that lawyers call a misallocation of burden. The law generally works to ensure that the party in the best position to address an issue bears the responsibility of handling that issue. In the copyright context, for example, the default assumption is that the copyright owners are best positioned to identify potential infringement. This is because, among other reasons, copyright owners know what content they own and which of their works have been licensed. Here, absent protection from Apple, developers hoping to avoid a legal dispute must investigate each of the technologies that Apple provides to make sure none of them is patent-infringing. For many small developers, this requirement, combined with a 30 percent fee to Apple, is an unacceptable cost. Even careful developers who hire lawyers to do full-scale patent searches on potential apps surely would not expect to investigate the technology that Apple provides. Instead, they would expect (with good reason) that Apple wouldn’t provide technologies in its App Store that open its developers up to liability – and/or would at least agree to defend them when a troll like Lodsys comes along.

The golden bullet would be indemnification by Apple for any use of the SDK, but given Apple’s inability to predict every contingency a developer could come up with, that may not be realistic for a public company. Neither is hoping patent holding companies will restrict their demands to deep pockets, or that the system itself gets overhauled in anything approaching a reasonable time frame.

What’s left for developers to do?

Apple retail getting updated iPad apps, about to deploy OS X Lion(?!)

Apple retail getting updated iPad apps, about to deploy OS X Lion?

Looks like Apple retail is getting new setups, including new iPad apps for their iPads, bringing their complement to Daily Download, RetailMe, Apple Connect, Apple Directory, Concierge, Mobile Genius, iRepair, and Easy Pay (the credit card processing app currently used on iPod touch).

Daily Download, which is a well-produced internal Daily 'newspaper for employees'. It is incredibly stylish and functional and and much better than the previous web-based version that existed before.

It’s also being rumored that stores are getting sent install images for OS X Lion, which sounds crazy because 10.7 is still in beta — currently preview 3, and not expected for release until later this year. (Perhaps following some new features announced at WWDC 2011 next month.)

Apple seems to be lining things up for that big Apple Store 2.0 re-launch we keep hearing about. Are you going to check out your local store come Sunday to see what all the fuss was about?

AT&T shows off lightning fast LTE network for future 4G iPhone

Posted: 20 May 2011 05:54 AM PDT

iPhone 6 to support AT&T LTE technology?

GigaOM was able to play around with the trial LTE network that AT&T has setup at their Foundry space in Plano, TX, which just might be used by iPhone 6 in 2012. They were able to reach blazingly fast speeds, beating out Verizon’s LTE performance without a hitch.

the highlight of the lab was that the Foundry is home to a trial Long Term Evolution network. I asked for a demo and got one. The speeds provided on the download side were about 28.87 Mbps, and were about 10.4 Mbps on the upload side.

The technology behind their test LTE network consists of both 700 MHz spectrum as well as the AWS band they already own (and want to get more of by purchasing T-Mobile USA).

Keep in mind that AT&T’s LTE network isn’t going to see the light of day for some time, but it’s also important to note the speeds they saw were reflective of ‘real-world’ performance. By comparison, Verizon users see on average ~10Mbps down and ~5Mbps up, so that’s a pretty significant difference in speed.

Are you excited as we are to see the iPhone taking advantage of these 4G speeds on AT&T’s network down the road? And will the new network finally bring with it reliability to match?

Daily Tip: How to save App Store app data with DataDeposit [jailbreak]

Posted: 19 May 2011 06:59 PM PDT

Restoring your iPhone and re-jailbreaking, and wondering how to save your App Store app data? We recently checked out how to use appbackup to save App store app data but now there’s a new app on the block called DataDeposit. What’s unique about DataDeposit is that you won’t need to save any files via SSH or iPhone Explorer. It simply backs up your app data to your Dropbox account. Awesome, right? Hit the jump for a quick walkthrough!

Backing up your app data

  1. Download DataDeposit from Cydia
  2. Make sure any apps that you want to back up are not running in the multitasking tray. If they are, simply close them out. (I completely emptied out my multitasking tray before backing up data.)
  3. From the main screen, select Backup my save data. You’ll be prompted to sign into your Dropbox account if you haven’t already done so.
  4. DataDeposit will populate a list of apps you have installed. Tap the app you would like to create a backup for and select Backup.
  5. Once you’re done backing up all the apps you’d like to be able to restore, go ahead and restore your device and re-jailbreak.

Restoring your app data

  1. Once you have re-jailbroken your device, re-download DataDeposit from Cydia.
  2. Launch DataDeposit and this time you’ll select Restore from Dropbox.
  3. DataDeposit will automagically populate all the apps you have restore points for in Dropbox. Simply go through the list and restore any backups you’d like. Again, make sure they aren’t running in the multitasking tray.
  4. You’re done!

I didn’t have too many issues with DataDeposit but there were a few instances where a backup didn’t sync up to Dropbox for some reason. So before restoring, I’d make sure your backups really are in Dropbox. I have Dropbox installed on my iMac so I made sure my Mac gave me a notification that it received the backup file for an app before I proceeded onto the next one. If you have issues uploading to Dropbox, there is a setting under change options that allows you to turn off HTTPS uploading to Dropbox. Try that if uploads or downloads fail.

I would really like to see a backup and restore all option added at some point too. Either way, DataDeposit definitely made it a bit less painless to restore a jailbroken iPhone. If you guys try it out, let us know what you think!

Tips of the day will range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary. If you already know this tip, keep the link handy as a quick way to help a friend.
