Posted: 13 May 2011 02:14 PM PDT Forbes reports that Jefferies & Co analyst Peter Misek has proudly entered our iPhone 5 release pool , adding his voice to the many others that claim Apple will be releasing the iPhone 5 in September. Sort of. Misek states Apple will be going with ‘iPhone 4S’ as the name, following in the footsteps of the 3G to 3GS upgrade, and will not support LTE because the Qualcomm chipset isn’t ready just yet. He also believes Sprint and T-Mobile will be onboard at launch.
Adding China Mobile would further propel Apple’s presence in the Chinese smartphone market. Rumors of the ‘iPhone 4S’ name picked up last month when some developers were reportedly receiving beefed up iPhone 4 units for testing purposes. Expectations that the next iPhone will be released in September have been mounting, but Apple could always have a surprise up their sleeve at WWDC in June. What are your thoughts? It also shows, the iPhone’s cydia UI, for screenshots and any other notes. Tell us, will you use this as an alternative cydia search? iOS developers being threatened with patent infringement over in-app purchase system [Updated] Posted: 13 May 2011 06:39 AM PDT Developer James Thomson reported on Twitter this morning that he’s been threatened with patent infringement for his use of in-app purchases in PCalc Lite.
Thomson isn’t the lone target of these threats, his UK timezone might just have gotten them to him sooner. Already Patrick McCarron has reported the same thing.
There are likely other developers who simply haven’t chosen to come forward yet. If you’ve gotten a FedEx patent threat today, let us know. UPDATE: The company claiming infringement is Lodsys and they seem to be targeting iOS apps that have free/lite versions and full versions, and link to or allow updating within app from free/lite to full. Rob Gloess of Computer LogicX was hit yesterday [MacRumors]
UPDATE 2: Apparently, according to the iOS SDK license, developers are not allowed to settle these kinds of lawsuits. [TidBITS]

Posted: 13 May 2011 04:55 AM PDT Samsung has just announced that it will be demonstrating a new display panel for touch screen devices at the SID Display Week 2011 next week in Los Angeles. The display will have a huge resolution of 2560 x 1600 @ 300dpi and will be a 10.1-inch panel. What is interesting to us is that the display may pave the way for the highly demanded Retina Display in the next version of the iPad. One of the reasons it failed to materialize in the iPad 2 was put down to power consumption. The new Samsung display uses a technology known as PenTile which is said to draw 40% less power consumption. PenTile has been developed by Samsung’s partner Nouvoyance. Because tablets are regularly used for viewing rich-colored images, the 10.1-inch 300 dpi display is ideal for applications that require extraordinary image and text clarity such as browsing the web and viewing high-definition movies, or reading books and spreadsheets. "In order to develop tablets with the form and function that consumers demand, a design engineer ultimately has to determine how to get the highest resolution display possible, while still fitting within the overall power budget for their design," said Joel Pollack, executive vice president of Nouvoyance, Samsung's affiliate company that developed the PenTile RGBW technology. Before we get too excited, Apple and Samsung have a little bit of work to do prior to this display appearing on the next gen iPad. The current iPad 2 has a 9.7-inch screen with a 4:3 aspect ratio at a resolution of 1024 x 768. If this was doubled to make it a Retina Display, it would be slightly less than this Samsung panel at 2048 x 1536. The Samsung panel also has an aspect ratio of 16:10 which Apple do not acknowledge as being the best for a tablet device. There is also the small matter of an ongoing legal case between Apple and Samsung to sort out. The good news is that Retina Display type panels are starting to appear now and become a real possibility for future devices. How many of our readers would want a Retina Display on their next iPad? Let us know in the comments!

Publishers agreeing to Apple subscriptions because consumers are opting in Posted: 13 May 2011 04:54 AM PDT Many print newspapers and magazines jumped on board with Apple’s subscription model for the iPad, last week, which was surprising because publishers have always been concerned about being unable to gather information from their customers because Apple requires the subscriber to opt into releasing this information. It turns out that many customers are actually agreeing to share their demographic data. Mark Edmiston, founder of the tablet magazine studio Nomad Editions, heard from other publishers that about 50% of subscribers are opting into sharing some personal information with them. Surprised, he confirmed that figure with Eddy Cue, Apple's vice president of internet services.
It speaks volumes that half of the people who are confronted with the little dialogue box that asks permission to share their personal data say “yes”. People trust Apple and it’s App Store. What about you? Do you opt in? If so, why? And if you don’t, why not? [Forbes] Publishers agreeing to Apple subscriptions because consumers are opting in is a story by TiPb. App for That: How do you set up a reminder to make a phone call? Posted: 12 May 2011 06:46 PM PDT There are hundreds of thousands of iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad apps for just about everything — so how come the one you need, the one you know just has to be there, is so hard to find? Enter TiPb’s new weekly feature where staff and readers alike sort through the App Store and help you find just the right App for That. This week, Andrew asks:
You can always use the notes field of the built in Calendar app, but this requires you to first open the contact’s information, copy the phone number, then paste it into the notes of a new Calendar event, and that’s just way too cumbersome for our taste. There are also many to-do apps that include this functionality, but in this case, less is more. For a better solution, follow along after the break!
Call Meet Calendar [$2.99 - iTunes link] allows you to set up Calendar events for phone calls. After creating the reminder in the app and designating the desired contact and call time, it automatically creates an event in the native Calendar app with a link of the phone number in the notes field. Additionally, the app adds links in the notes that open it to edit the existing reminder or add a new reminder. When it’s time to make the phone call, a local notification pops-up and leads you to the calendar event. Making the call is only a tap away. Call Meet Calendar also lets you to setup reminders for meetings, SMS, and follow-up. The premium version allows you to set up an unlimited number of reminders, while the free version [iTunes link] only allows 2 reminders per day and includes ads. All in all, its a good solution. Would we rather see a call reminder feature built into the Calendar app with notifications that let you instantly make the desired phone call? Absolutely. Perhaps in iOS 5… Bonus app: Reminders! Simple Todo and Alerts [$0.99 - iTunes link] is also great because, when accepting the notification, a new popup with notes and a direct call button appears. Anyone else have any App for That suggestions for Andrew? Let him — and all of us — know in the comments. Having trouble finding what you need in the app store? Send us an email to news@tipb.com and let us know what you’re looking for, and we’ll do our best to find you just the right App for That!
