Apple TV iOS 4.2.2 update now available Posted: 11 May 2011 03:01 PM PDT Apple today released an update for Apple TV (2010), bringing it to iOS 4.2.2. The over-the-air update looks to be of the bug fix variety:
As always with iOS, if you’re Jailbroken stay away until the usual tools are updated to support the new firmware or you risk losing your Jailbreak/untether. If you notice anything else, let us know! Poll: Which version of iOS are you currently running? Posted: 11 May 2011 11:12 AM PDT Which version of iOS are you currently running? Apple released iOS 4.3.3/4.2.8 last week so we figured we’d see how many of you in the TiPb nation updated your primary device, be it an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad to the latest and greatest? Did you rush out an update immediately? Did you wait until you next needed to sync with iTunes and it reminded you? Did you wait for the Jailbreak before updating? Or did you not update at all? Since you all listen to our iPhone Live and iPad Live podcasts (right?!) you know I haven’t updated yet and probably won’t until I find a bug or see a feature that really encourages me to do it. (Hey, I don’t even update my apps, remember!) If you have multiple iOS devices, just vote based on the one you use most and either way, give us all the juicy details in the comments! X Gear anti-glare film for iPad – accessory review Posted: 11 May 2011 08:58 AM PDT The X Gear Anti Glare film for iPad aims to make Apple’s very shiny iPad shine just a little less in our eyes. Now screen protectors have always been my arch nemesis — I have always much preferred the feel of the actual glass over the feel of any screen protector. But I figured I’d give the X Gear anti-glare version a chance to change my mind. Did it succeed? Read on to find out!
I’m extremely careful with my devices and always have a case on them so I’m not too concerned with screen protectors. The one reason I “would” consider one is to minimize fingerprints. That’s what I was really hoping to do here. Some screen protectors seem to minimize the rate at which fingerprints take over your screen. I was left disappointed after applying the X Gear anti-glare film as it seemed to accumulate just as many fingerprints (if not more), than the naked glass did. It did seem to wipe down quicker than the glass does so I suppose that could be considered a positive. The process of putting the screen protector on was simple enough. If this process is something you’re unfamiliar with, check out our guide on how to apply a screen protector to your iPhone or iPad. I did end up with a few bubbles but I managed to get those out with the soft card that X Gear provides with the screen protector. They also include a cleaning cloth as well. Overall, the quality of the screen protector was pretty good. It just doesn’t do much to minimize fingerprints. If you’re looking for something to add more protection from scratches, the thickness seems to be pretty substantial. It isn’t that noticeable when it’s on the device until you feel the screen. There’s a noticeable difference from what the glass feels like. When scrolling and sliding your finger around, it just isn’t as smooth. This is unfortunately the case with most screen protectors. It’s just not the same experience. If you’re in the market for a screen protector that’s a bit more durable and you don’t mind getting used to your iPad screen feeling a bit different to the touch, I’d say this is a pretty decent screen protector. I still prefer the feel of other protectors better, such as the BodyGuardz screen protectors that are also available in the TiPb accessory store for around the same price. You can check out the X Gear Anti Glare film for iPad in the TiPb Accessory store. Pros

Apple reviewing DUI checkpoint apps at request of US Senate Posted: 11 May 2011 08:15 AM PDT During yesterday’s Senate subcommittee hearing on location tracking, Apple was asked why they haven’t pulled a number of DUI checkpoint apps like Fuzz Alert which notify users of nearby law-enforcement checkpoints.
VP of Software Technology Guy Tribble told senators that Apple is currently looking into the legality of these apps and would remove them from the App Store if they were deemed illegal. He also commented that these apps are only "publishing data that's actually first published by the police department”, to which Senator Charles Schumer responded claiming he was unaware of any police departments who published this information in realtime. Apparently these DUI checkpoint apps have continued to anger senators after watching RIM pull similar apps from their App World while Apple and Google make sure it’s actually warranted before pulling the trigger. What’s your take? Do you think DUI checkpoint apps should be allowed to remain in the App Store or should Apple get rid of them? Sound off in the comments below! Google I/O Android announcements [the competition] Posted: 11 May 2011 08:09 AM PDT Google had their big, ice cream sandwich filled I/O developer conference Android keynote yesterday, and with Apple’s own WWDC just a month away, what they chose to announce — and maybe not announce — definitely helps sets the stage. To keep up with the competition, and our sibling site Android Central‘s complete coverage, follow on after the break!
In previous years Google has showcased everything from hardware to software to sneak peaks to technology previews in volumes we haven’t seen since the great Bill Gates CES keynotes of yore. This year was no exception… unless you were hoping for a Nexus 3 (or Nexus M or H2 or S2) — but hey, we’re probably not getting an iPhone 5 until fall so there’s plenty of time still for that. Sure, as usual a lot of Google’s announcements this year look like Apple’s announcements from previous years, what with music and movie rentals and accessory integration for the SDK, but WWDC will likely have some Apple announcements — perhaps including system-level voice control — that Google announced at their previous shows as well. It’s all about seeing and raising now. And sure, some of this won’t ship, or will stall (Google TV), or falter (Wave), but a lot of it will. And it will push Apple to keep raising the stakes. And that’s good for all of us.
Phew! And that’s just day 1! What do you think? Anything really compelling? Truly tempting? Anything Apple absolutely has to match at WWDC next month? Google I/O Android announcements [the competition] is a story by TiPb. This feed is sponsored by The iPhone Blog Store. |

iFlowReader software developer closing down, points finger firmly in Apple’s direction! Posted: 11 May 2011 04:39 AM PDT BeamItDown software has just announced that its iFlow Reader eBook application will no longer be supported and that the company is going out of business. The reason for the closure of the company, according to BeamItDown, is Apple and the recent changes in its subscription policies. Unfortunately for us and for you as an iOS user, Apple has decided that it wants all of the ebook business on iOS for itself and it has made mid-game rule changes that make it impossible for almost anyone but Apple to sell ebooks at a profit on iOS. They are now requiring us to give them 30% of the sale price of any eBook that we sell. This is greater than our total profit on these ebooks so we cannot possibly make any money on the sale. This makes it impossible to stay in business. We put our faith in Apple and they screwed us.You can find out more information at the company's website; such as how you can ensure any books that you have bought with iFlow can be safeguarded prior to the app and service disappearing for good. Do any of our readers use iFlow? Do you think this could be the first of many developers who are set to struggle with Apple's insistence on talking a 30% cut from the sale of eBooks etc? iFlowReader software developer closing down, points finger firmly in Apple's direction! is a story by TiPb. Daily Tip: How to fix the white Cydia icon glitch Posted: 10 May 2011 07:51 PM PDT Just Jailbreak your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, and instead of the usual, brown Cydia store icon you just have a blank, and wondering how to fix it? It happens sometimes, and it can be eerie and disconcerting, so it’s understandable you’d want the proper Cydia icon back in the proper place. Luckily the fix is easy and we’ll show it to you after the break.
There are a few ways to fix the white cydia icon glitch, including launching the app a couple times, rebooting your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad a couple of times, or even re-jailbreaking if you want to make absolutely sure nothing went wrong. Those might work, might not, or you might just not be patient enough to keep fiddling with it. In that case:
When it’s done, your Cydia icon should be back to its brown self and your eerie disconcertions should be put to rest. Have any other great Cydia tips? Let us know in comments!
