Dieter Bohn, writing for PreCentral.net:

May 15th should prove to be an interesting day on AT&T. They've got two new smartphone launches planned, and they couldn't be more different. First up is a phone near and dear to our hearts: the iddy biddy HP Veer 4G. Threatening to overshadown the Veer, in the most literal sense, is yet another Android mega-phone: the Samsung Infuse 4G. This massive phone is faced with a ridiculous 4.5-inch screen. It's downright frightening in comparison to the Veer.

Phil Nickinson, writing for AndroidCentral.net:

It’s rocking Android 2.2 Froyo, so let’s hope we see a Gingerbread update in the near future.

Some random guy, writing for TiPb.com:

AT&T has just finished their Q1, 2011 quarter, which saw 3.6 million iPhone activations, 1 million more than the same time last year.

TiPb Asks: Do you judge an app by its icon?

Posted: 06 May 2011 12:12 PM PDT

iPhone-4-icon-PSD

A while back on iPad Live, we got to talking about how we often judge and app by its icon — if the icon is bad, or even just not great, we don’t buy it (ahem, Chad!). There are just so many apps in the store it becomes an easy way to eliminate some. If the developer doesn’t care enough to make a fabulous icon — the thing everyone sees when buying and launching their app — what else don’t they care about?

Are we being snobs? Superficial much? Missing out on great apps just because the developer was better at coding than they were design? Or do great icons sometimes hide crappy apps?

How important is the icon to you when deciding whether or not to spend your money on an app? Do you judge an app by its icon? Be truthful now!

Apple now number 2 in worldwide smartphone shipments

Posted: 06 May 2011 06:18 AM PDT

Market research company, IDC has just released its smartphone market share numbers for the first quarter of 2011 and it clearly shows Apple is only second to Nokia in worldwide shipments.

Apple's shipments have grown from 8.7 million in 2010 to 18.7 million in 2011 which is an amazing growth of over 114%. In the same period Nokia only managed a 12.6% increase.

Only 6 million units now separate Apple from Nokia. Apple has posted market beating year-on-year growth which has been bolstered this year with the release of the CDMA iPhone for Verizon as well as strong China, South Korea and Saudi markets. Apple's market share has increased from 15.7% to 18.7% in the last 12 months.

How to jailbreak iOS 4.3.3 via redsn0w 0.9.6rc15 (untethered)

Posted: 06 May 2011 06:16 AM PDT

Complete guide to Jailbreaking iPhone, iPod touch, and original iPad running iOS 4.3.3 with redsn0w

The iOS 4.3.3 untethered Jailbreak for iPhone, iPod touch, and original iPad has just gone live… and once again it’s the same exploit and the same process as iOS 4.3.1 and iOS 4.3.2. That’s right, three-peat! So here’s your updated redsn0w Jailbreak walkthrough, just to get you going as fast as possible

Important: iPad 2 is still not supported. Likewise, if you’ve got a Verizon iPhone you’ll want to wait for our updated Verizon iPhone iOS 4.3.3 guide.

Important: If you want to preserve your unlock, DO NOT USE THIS METHOD. To maintain your baseband, you’ll need to create a custom IPSW and pwnagetool. Check out our TiPb jailbreak forum for more.

Hit the jump for a complete how-to!

What you need

  • iTunes 10.2.2 or higher
  • redsn0w for Windows or Mac OS X
  • iOS 4.3.3 (liPhone3,14.3.38J2_Restore.ipsw) located in: *Windows XP: Documents and Settings[User]\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes[Device] Software Updates *Windows Vista/7: Users[User]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates *Mac OS X: [User]/Library/iTunes/[Device] Software Updates/
  1. If you don’t care about Unlocking, update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to iOS 4.3.3 via iTunes. (If you’re not sure, here’s how to update.)
  2. Next, you will need to download redsn0w via the link above
  3. Next, you will need to go grab the appropriate iOS firmware for your device. (Located in the directory listed above)
  4. Once you have downloaded the correct firmware and redsn0w, you are now ready to jailbreak.
  5. After you launch redsn0w, you will be asked to browse and choose the custom firmware you downloaded in the previous step.
  6. redsn0w will process the firmware…
  7. …and let you know when it’s good to go
  8. Next you’ll choose to install Cydia
  9. And then redsn0w will walk you through placing your device in DFU mode. Just make sure you start this process with your device OFF.
  10. Let your device do its thing and you’re done!

For a complete walk-through, check out the video tutorial above. It’s for iOS 4.3.1 but as we said at the beginning, this is the exact same process. If you aren’t sure whether or not you want to take a jump to the dark side, check out our complete jailbreak basics guide first!

Questions? Concerns? Did you encounter any problems during your jailbreak? Let us know in the comments or check out the TiPb jailbreak forum!

iPad 2 Jailbreak update — still pending

Posted: 06 May 2011 05:48 AM PDT

iPad 2 Jailbreak update -- still pending

Those of you waiting to Jailbreak your iPad 2… looks like you’ll have to keep waiting for now as, according to the Dev Team’s updated this morning, the search for an exploit continues!

The iPad2 jailbreak remains under development. As you may know, the original exploit @comex developed in the first week of the iPad2 release was mysteriously fixed by Apple within days of its development. Partly because of this, don't expect much public discussion of the iPad2 jailbreak until it's actually finished and ready for release (and please avoid asking about it). In all liklihood, it will be a userland exploit like the first (unreleased) one, not dependent on bootrom dumps. The first one can't be released even for those with the original 4.3 firmware due to legal (distribution) reasons.

Geohot has reportedly accepted p0xisninja’s challenge to see who can be the first to dump the bootrom, so hopefully some progress is being made.

Speaking of which, MyGreatFest is trying to raise money to help bring p0sixninja over to the UK for the big show, so if you’re looking for something to do while you wait on the iPad 2 Jailbreak, head on over and help them out!

iOS 4.3.3 untethered jailbreak available now!

Posted: 06 May 2011 05:37 AM PDT

The Dev-Team has announced the release of the iOS 4.3.3 untethered jailbreak. Those of you holding off updating until this was released can now go ahead. The untethered jailbreak is still based on the exploit created by @i0nic for iOS 4.3.1. That is now three firmware releases in a row without Apple fixing the exploit; that is a first!

Today's PwnageTool and redsn0w incorporate @i0n1c's port to 4.3.3 (it's ironic that such a long-lasting untether doesn't even have an official name!).  It also of course uses geohot's limera1n bootrom exploit to inject the jailbreak. The 4.3.3 untether works on all devices that actually support 4.3.3 except for the iPad2: ultrasn0w unlockers must stay away from redsn0w!  Use only a custom IPSW to update to 4.3.3, to avoid updating your baseband.

If you’re new to Jailbreak, check out our Jailbreak starters guide, and if you need help, head on over to our Jailbreak Forums.

If you go-ahead and apply this jailbreak, let us know how it works out in the comments!

Playboy magazine coming on May 18th, complete and uncensored!

Posted: 06 May 2011 05:23 AM PDT

Playboy founder Hugh Hefner has again been hitting twitter to let everyone know that Playboy would be arriving on the iPad May 18. Way back in January he told us it was coming in March but it hasn't materialized so let's hope this time it's for real. Again, Hugh Hefner states in the tweet that Playboy will be complete and uncensored.

We still don't know if this is going to be available as an app or a dedicated iPad website. If it does turn out to be an app, this would be a great way to publicize the new iTunes subscription services that other magazines and newspapers are starting to use. It could also open the door to other similar content that has so far been discouraged from entering the App Store.

What do you think? Should we have the choice of getting more adult content on our iPads? Should Apple let this content into the App Store, now that we have more content restriction options in iOS? Let us know in the comments!

Daily Tip: How to trouble shoot iPhone and iPad accessories

Posted: 05 May 2011 06:57 PM PDT

Having problems with your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad accessories and wondering how to troubleshoot them? Here are a few basic tips which will help you identify the issue. Stick with us after the break.

Check for defects

If you have another iOS device, or have a family member, friend, or colleague with an iOS device, try the accessory out on their iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. For example, if a earbuds don’t plug properly into your 3.5mm headset jack, or a case doesn’t fit quite right, see if it plugs in properly or fits better on theirs.

If there’s a defect, you can contact the store or manufacturer and arrange for an exchange.

Search our Forums

Head on over to our TiPb Accessory Forums and see if there are any discussions already going on about your accessory. If anyone else has already had and solved the same problem, you’ll save yourself a lot of effort by following the same steps yourself. If they haven’t solved it, you can help crowd source a solution. If no one else has discussed the problem yet, you can start a new thread and get it going!

We have some of the best readers in the world and they will be able to let you know if there’s an issue (or not).

Check for compatibility

First thing you should do is make sure that the item that you are using is fully compatible with your iPhone or iPad. To do this you can head over to our accessory store , or to the website of the accessory maker and double check to see which iOS devices are compatible.

You may find that some devices are only partially compatible with your iPad or iPhone. For example, some older car adapters may allow you to play music through your FM radio but won’t charge your iPhone (a very common issue).

Bonus Tip: Our most awesome Managing Editor Rene Ritchie has mentioned that some accessories may also popup an incompatibility warning because they’re not officially part of Apple’s program (haven’t paid the made for iPhone or iPad licensing fee), but still charge you iPhone fine. Either way, find out for sure.

Unplug and Reset

Take out the accessory. If the accessory has a off button turn it off and then restart your iOS device. When your iOS device restarts fully, try to plug the accessory back in. Here’s [how to reset iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad].

Some accessories may require additional steps to start fresh. For example, Bluetooth headsets may need you to press certain button combinations to put them back into Pairing Mode. Check the instructions that came with your device, or check the manufacturers website for details.

Restore

If you know the accessory is not defective and that it’s supposed to work with your iOS device, try to restore your device. Sometimes that will clean out any glitches and get you back to a fresh, default state.

Not sure? Here’s how to restore your iPhone or iPad.

Update iOS

Some accessories may need to have the latest iOS software in order to function properly. For example, iOS 4 added Bluetooth control support that wasn’t available in iOS 3. If your accessory isn’t doing everything it should, make sure your software is up to date.

If you’re not sure, here’s how to update your iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.

(Note: if you are are jailbroken you may lose your jailbreak if you update.)

Hope you found this tip helpful. If you have any accessory trouble-shooting tips of your own please share them into the comments!

Tips of the day will range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary. If you already know this tip, keep the link handy as a quick way to help a friend. If you have a tip of your own you’d like to suggest, add them to the comments or send them in to news@tipb.com. (If it’s especially awesome and previously unknown to us, we’ll even give ya a reward…)
