Apple sues Samsung, accuses them of copying iPhone, iPad Posted: 18 Apr 2011 01:55 PM PDT Apple is suing Samsung, claiming Samsung’s Galaxy line of phones and tablets copy the look and feel of iPhone and iPad.
Samsung’s Galaxy line has been one of the most commercially successful range of Android products to date but have also been among the most iOS-like in terms of interface conventions, thanks to Samsung’s TouchWiz. Ironically, Samsung is also one of Apple’s more important manufacturing partners, producing components for iPhone and iPad both. This is the second Android-based lawsuit launched by Apple, who sued HTC last year. (HTC has reached a licensing deal with Microsoft, ironically, for Google’s Android.) UPDATE: More from Apple, and an illustrative image, above. [Mobilized]
UPDATE 2: As Jon points out in the comments, Apple is legally obligated to defend its patents or it risks losing them. When and against whom it chooses to defend those patents, however, is interesting, right? For further coverage, see our sibling site Android Central. iPhone 5 release pool: Concord says late 2011, 8mp camera, A5 processor, Qualcomm baseband Posted: 18 Apr 2011 10:25 AM PDT Continuing our policy on having fun with iPhone 5 rumors, TiPb is once again adding an analyst to our iPhone 5 release pool. This time it’s Concord Securities as reported by Apple Insider:
Kuo says production will begin in September, which would match up with rumors of iPhone 5 only being released this fall instead of its previous summer slot. He also thinks iPhone 6 will bring more dramatic changes, so this year could be like 2009 was with the iPhone 3GS. So there you go, Concord, your entry had been added to our iPhone 5 release pool. We’ll see how you do come launch announcement! iPhone 5 release pool: Concord says late 2011, 8mp camera, A5 processor, Qualcomm baseband is a story by TiPb. Apple makes changes to the App Store rating system Posted: 18 Apr 2011 10:24 AM PDT It looks like Apple may have adjusted the ranking algorithm behind the App Store recently, propelling apps like Facebook, Angry Birds and other high-rated apps to the top of the list.
Apple is reportedly taking user engagement and app ratings into consideration when ranking apps, instead of only their download numbers. This should be a good thing for standout apps and will make sure more popular and engaging apps reside at the top of the list more often. It will also be beneficial for consumers by encouraging developers to build better apps, which is never a bad thing in our book! Have you noticed any other great apps moving up the top app lists? Developer Spotlight: Graham Clarke of Glasshouse Apps Posted: 18 Apr 2011 09:00 AM PDT TiPb’s developer spotlights are like DVD/iTunes Extras for the App Store — a weekly look behind the scenes at the programers and designers that bring you the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad apps and games you love. This week Rene talks with Graham Clarke of Glasshouse Apps. What’s your name? Graham Clarke What’s your company’s name? Glasshouse Apps Where are you located? Central Coast NSW in Australia (but Nick Takayama, the other half of Glasshouse Apps is located 4,000km / 2,500 mi away on the other side of the country). What’s your website address? http://www.glasshouseapps.com What’s your Twitter name? @glasshouseapps What apps do you make? The Early Edition for iPad, Gift Plan, Barista and Cellar for iPhone What apps, other than your own, are currently among your favorites? Tweetbot, Twitterrific (yes, both!), IMDb
How long have you been an iOS app designer? I’ve been designing apps for just over two years now. Barista hit the App Store in early 2009, when there were just 15,000 iPhone apps available. What’s your background? I was born in Sydney Australia, but I lived in a very remote village in the middle of Papua New Guinea for the next 8 years. Our family moved back to Australia and I lived on the family farm until I went to university in Sydney to study design. When I graduated I worked for a few years and after being retrenched I tried my hand at self-employment, which is what I’ve been doing ever since (10 years and counting!). Do you develop for any other platform in addition to iOS? Just iOS. We’re only a two-man band so supporting other platforms and devices wouldn’t be practical (or enjoyable!) for us. What primary computer setup do you use for your iOS development? Mac Pro with 15Gb Ram, and two displays (27″ and 24″ ACDs). What personal iOS device(s) do you personally use most often? Probably my iPhone, simply because it’s always there with me. The iPad comes a close second. What mobile device(s), other than iOS, do you currently use? Ummm, that’s difficult! My car’s a mobile device right? It’s a 2009 Honda Odyssey. What’s your favorite thing about developing for iOS? It’s just exciting. Apple make it exciting. I now look forward to getting up on a Monday morning to start work and that blows my mind. What’s your least favorite thing about developing for iOS? Visibility on the App Store is getting harder and that’s a challenge. A huge App Store is great for customers, but it makes standing out more and more difficult for developers. What feature would you most like Apple to add to the iOS 5 SDK? Cloud syncing of app data through MobileMe would be nice. And background, timed events for apps (fetching news for instance!) would really useful – how many iOS devices are sitting there plugged in at night, not doing anything? As a consumer, it would be cool to see a redeveloped home screen. What feature would you most like Apple to add to the App Store? Whenever Apple introduce new ways of promoting and flagging great apps, it benefits both developers and consumers. I’d love to see an even more comprehensive way of filtering the good stuff from the rest – there’s a lot of attention given to the front page of the App Store but still a lot of potential for improving Category views. If we were to eavesdrop on you while you were designing, what curse word would we hear you use the most? Hmmm, ‘bugger’ or ‘crap’ is about as colourful as it gets! What do you do when you’re not designing iOS apps? If I’m not in front of my computer or iPad you’ll see me drinking plenty of coffee, riding my Vespa or hanging out with my wife and kids. What should we look for from you next? (Tease away!) Something big! (well big enough to keep two guys busy for 6 months anyway). Thanks Graham! Rebel 2Phone iPhone 4 case, two lines active at the same time [jailbreak] Posted: 18 Apr 2011 05:47 AM PDT Rebel has developed an iPhone 4 case called the 2Phone that has the ability to add an additional line — and SIM card — to an iPhone 4. Rebel has been around for a while and offer quite a few unlock solutions for iPhone. What makes 2Phone more interesting is the fact that the two lines can be active together. The Rebel 2Phone case has a SIM Card slot which accepts normal size SIM Cards. The case has its own battery to power the additional SIM Card and quad band cell radio; it can also power the iPhone 4, should you run out of juice. You need to have a jailbroken iPhone 4 to use the case as it requires some software to activate the additional line and calling ability. The case is available now, direct from Rebel, but comes at quite a high price of £149.99 ($244). Shipping is currently free worldwide. Take a look at the video after the break. Would you consider picking one of these up? Let us know in the comments!

Jesse Jackson Jr. claims the iPad is killing American jobs! [video] Posted: 18 Apr 2011 05:44 AM PDT Jesse Jackson Jr. is pointing the finger firmly in the direction of Apple, the iPad and Steve Jobs, claiming they are responsible for killing American jobs. It’s simple: Because everyone can download books and newspapers, everyone who works at bookstores (he notes Borders going out of business) or the publishing industry, or for textbooks, will lose their jobs to the people making iPads in China. It seems Jesse Jackson Jr. hasn't taken into account the amount of jobs Apple has created in many other business areas. Take a look at the video after the break. Then make sure you pop back here and let us know what you think in the comments!
