TiPb Asks: Are you tempted by the PlayBook or an Android Honeycomb tablet? Posted: 14 Apr 2011 02:58 PM PDT If it were possible for the iPad to own 138% of the tablet market it probably would, but competing devices have already launched like the Motorola Xoom, are about to launch like the BlackBerry Playbook, or will be launching later in the year like the HP TouchPad and more Android Honeycomb tablets. Some will be smaller, with 7 or 8-inch screens. Some will be slightly bigger with 10.1-inch screens. Most will have Adobe Flash support to varying degrees. They’ll have more ports (and not require camera kits or AV adapter dongles). They’ll have webOS card view (even if they come from RIM) or a more desktop style UI. They won’t have iOS apps but they’ll have Android apps (even if they come from RIM) or webOS apps. They may have really fast LTE connections at some point. They won’t have iTunes but they probably will have wider native support for video and audio file formats. Even 3D. They may or may not be easier to hack. But they’ll be different to Apple’s current Pad 2, in small or big ways. And for many people they’ll be not-Apple and that will be tempting. Will it tempt you? Be honest now — let me know why! State of the iOS 4.3.2/iOS 4.2.7 Jailbreak Posted: 14 Apr 2011 01:03 PM PDT Today, apple has released the 4.3.2 firmware for iPhone (AT&T GSM), iPad, and iPod touch, and 4.2.7 for iPhone (Verizon). The update includes security fixes. Since Jailbreak exploits security holes, there’s every chance the update may patch something crucial to the current iOS 4.3.1/4.2.6 Jailbreaks. That means if you update, you may lose your Jailbreak. We’re hearing the Jailbreak for 4.2.1 still works, but not the untethered version. Either way we recommend being safe rather than sorry and holding off on any update until the Jailbreak developers provide further information. Same goes for unlockers — stay away. In the meantime, make sure you save your SHSH blobs with tinyumbrella (Cydia isn’t enough). We’ll update everyone as soon as we know more, and be sure to check out our Jailbreak Forums to keep up with the latest! State of the iOS 4.3.2/iOS 4.2.7 Jailbreak is a story by TiPb. Sony set to release a Crackle app, access to free streaming movies and TV shows Posted: 14 Apr 2011 12:54 PM PDT Sony is working on an iOS app to provide access to its online streaming site Crackle. Crackle has a ton of free movies and TV shows which you can stream to Mac or Windows PC's; or any browser that can support Flash. Unfortunately, as we well know, iOS devices don't support Flash. When you try and access a stream on an iOS device, you now get a message telling you that the Crackle app is coming soon for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Crackle is one of the fastest growing entertainment destinations today, featuring only the genres you love — comedy, action, drama, sci-fi, horror — anywhere you are. There is no information as to when we can expect the app to hit iTunes; you can register to be kept updated. Do any of our readers use Crackle? Let us know in the comments! Sony set to release a Crackle app, access to free streaming movies and TV shows is a story by TiPb. Tweetbot once again redefines Twitter for iPhone Posted: 13 Apr 2011 08:35 PM PDT Tweetbot just hit the US App Store and boy is it a beauty. Tapbots has done it again and designed an application that is not only functional and pretty, but an artistic masterpiece that I cannot keep my hands off of. I was an instant critic when I read Tapbots’ claim that Tweetbot is “a twitter client with personality”, but they’re right. A text review can hardly do this app justice because it is impossible to put into words how beautifully Tweetbot is made. Sure, I can describe how, at your touch, a tweet slides up revealing a navigation bar while simultaneous emitting the perfect sound. I can explain that swiping a tweet to right reveals the conversation and swiping to left displays related tweets. I can tell you about smart gestures, multiple timelines, and customizable navigation. I can even spew out a concrete list of every feature that Tweetbot includes. What I can’t provide you, however, is the experience. The problem with Twitter clients these days is that they’re all the same. Yes, the same. Sure, the features vary (slightly) between them and some come with cool themes. The experiences, however, are too alike. I used to get excited when a new Twitter app was released because each app offered something different, something new. Today, they all feel the same. What happened? When users flocked to a particular Twitter app, other devs copied what made that app special. Individualization was lost. Now the App Store is basically filled with slight variations of the same app – with the exception of Tweetbot. Tweetbot is different. It’s innovative and refreshing. Tweetbot isn’t an app you use, it’s one you interact with. Everything has an animation, a sound, a beautiful interface. And true to Tapbots’ style, the sounds are subtle and pleasant – enriching the experience. In case you can’t tell, I’m a huge fan of Tweetbot, but it isn’t for everybody. Tweetbot is full-featured, but doesn’t have every possible feature known to those in the Twitter app world. Tweetbot doesn’t have a mute option or display in-line photos. It doesn’t have multiple themes or native push notifications (but it’s compatible with Boxcar). If these features are deal-breakers to you, then Tweetbot isn’t for you. Not yet anyway. For those who are suckers for design, innovation, and dare I say, personality, Tweetbot will rock your world. Check out the screenshot gallery after the break! [$1.99 - iTunes link]

Compatible with ix.Mac.MarketingName? Posted: 13 Apr 2011 08:19 PM PDT The iTunes App Store is currently listing apps as compatible with “ix”, or more exactly — “compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, iPad and ix.Mac.MarketingName”. That’s almost certainly a glitch of some kind in the system and I expect Apple will fix it asap but it does make for a fun question — if there is indeed an “ix” in the pipeline, what could it be? An app-compatible Apple TV? Cross-compatible Mac Apps? A 5 to 7-inch device? Something we haven’t imagined yet? While Apple sees to its stray text, give us your best guess — what’s “ix”? [Thanks Ethan!]
