TiPb Asks: Would you want a cheaper iPad subsidized by advertising?

TiPb Asks: Would you want a cheaper iPad subsidized by advertising?

Would you want an iPad that, like the newly announced Amazon Kindle discount, is subsidized by advertising? Now the new Kindle is only $25 (?!) cheaper which isn’t really a big enough subsidy in my opinion but what if the numbers were more interesting, like $100 off, $200 off, $300 off, or even free with iAds? Is there a discount level appealing enough that you’d put up with an iAd banner at the bottom of your home screen or 15 seconds of pre-roll several times an hour when you launch an app?

If you buy an iPad for $499 or up you pay once and the device is yours forever. If you get a cheaper or even free iPad you save once but pay with your attention and personal information forever. With carrier subsidies for the iPhone, North Americans have shown time and again we’d rather save money up front even if we get locked into a 2 or 3 year contract that ends up costing us thousands of dollars. Would advertising be just one more way to save up front?

Google has been rumored to have wanted ad subsidized Android phones since inception, and now Amazon is doing it with the Kindle. Do you think Apple would ever go there? Would you want them to?

iPad 2 and iPhone 4 3D demonstration, no glasses required [video]

Posted: 12 Apr 2011 05:29 AM PDT

The EHCI Research Group has produced a demonstration video of 3D without glasses on an iPad 2 and iPhone 4 that will make your jaw drop to the floor! The possibility of glasses–free 3D hitting iOS devices has just become a reality.

Head-Coupled Perspective (HCP) on mobile devices allows to create a glasses-free monocular 3D display. It is based on a efficient head-tracker that uses the front-facing camera of the device. We use an off-axis projection in order to adapt the perspective of the 3D scene according to the head’s position of the user. Such spatially-aware mobile display enables to improve the possibilities of interaction.
The videos are after the break, you have to see them to believe how good they are. When you have, let us know what you think in the comments!

Buyer beware: Remote carrier unlocks for iPhone

Buyer beware: remote carrier unlocks for iPhone

A company by the name of Negri Electronics (among others) is offering a remote unlock for any iPhone model using the device’s IMEI number — the cost is a cool $175. They claim the unlock won’t be affected by future software updates and back the service with a 100% money back guarantee.

This is the FIRST remote unlocking service for the iPhone. Any model, any carrier, any firmware, any baseband and a permanent unlock. YOUR PHONE WILL NOT RE-LOCK, EVER. This service is guaranteed. Simply send us your IMEI and within 24 hours yourself a permanently unlocked iPhone.

The way an official SIM-unlock from Apple works is that the iPhone’s IMEI number is registered with Apple’s activation servers so that, when the iPhone is connected to iTunes, it’s recognized as unlocked, activated, and left open regardless of which SIM in subsequently inserted in the device.

Negri is not Apple or an official iPhone carrier, so there should be a big yellow sticky placed on it saying “buyer beware”.

Even officially unlocked iPhones sometimes experience problems or need to be reset by Apple, which requires time on the phone with Apple support or a trip to the Apple Store. Needless to say, they won’t help you at all with an unofficially unlocked phone.

So is this remote unlock worth dropping $175 on? Let us know what you think in the comments!

UPDATE: @CellUnlocknet on Twitter let us know they’re not offering this service because, as mentioned above, Apple could discover the IMEI numbers unlocked through this process and relock them. So once again, make a well informed decision any time you spend a good chunk of cash on the internet.

Viacom now taking aim at Cablevision as well as Time Warner

Posted: 11 Apr 2011 09:33 PM PDT

Viacom is flexing its muscles once more, this time asking Cablevision to remove all Viacom media content from its Optimum iPad App. A couple of weeks ago, we heard that Time Warner had been asked to remove all content from Viacom from its TW Cable app; which it has now done. That particular tiff is heading to court for a ruling.

When Cablevision launched its Optimum iPad app last week, it went to great lengths to explain that the app was not streaming content from the internet and did not even need an internet connection; this they thought would satisfy the networks. The iPad was acting purely as an additional TV set and should be treated in the same manner. Unfortunately Viacom do not agree and have asked Cablevision to remove all Viacom content from the app.

This one is set to rumble on for a long long time. As usual in these cases, the consumer will suffer until someone sees sense and resolves the issues. Don't hold your breath!

Daily Tip: How to add contact pics to your address book with Cyntact [jailbreak]

Posted: 11 Apr 2011 08:55 PM PDT

Wondering how to put faces besides all the names in your iPhone address books? Adding contact pictures to your address book on stock iPhones will only show the contact picture when you actually click the contact. For jailbreakers, there’s a nifty little jailbreak app called Cyntact that’ll add them inline. Cyntact was actually one of the first apps available for purchase in Cydia. It was also written by the creator of Cydia, Jay Freeman (Saurik).

To get Cyntact working on your phone, it’s as simple as installing the app from Cydia. The current price for Cyntact is $1.00 (USD).

  1. Launch Cydia.
  2. Tap Search on the bottom bar.
  3. Search for Cyntact.
  4. Purchase Cyntact for $1.00.
  5. After your phone resprings, go into your address book and you should see inline contact pics now.

If for some reason you don’t see them, respring your phone again. This has happened to me once or twice and a respring fixed it. It only ever happens on a new install of Cyntact. It’s a dead simple little tweak but still remains one of my favorite jailbreak apps to this day. If you guys try it out, let us know what you think!

Tips of the day will range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary. If you already know this tip, keep the link handy as a quick way to help a friend. If you have a tip of your own you’d like to suggest, add them to the comments or send them in to news@tipb.com. (If it’s especially awesome and previously unknown to us, we’ll even give ya a reward…)

  1. erikr Said,

There are several current problems facing Cablevision and its iPad app. First, it is embroiled in a legal battle with Viacom regarding the legality of live-stream. Second, even IF the app is approved for future use, it still will not be available for use outside the home. I have and work for DISH Network, and TV Everywhere through my Sling Adapter, and it actually works EVERYWHERE I go with 3G or Wi-Fi. In this age of cellular blanket coverage, that IS everywhere!! Now I can use my iPad (also works with Android, Tablet, Laptop etc.) to take my Live TV, DVR and On-Demand titles with me on-the-go!! Check it out at Dish.com/TVEverywhere!!
