AT&T iPhone users see more than twice the dropped calls of Verizon iPhone Posted: 05 Apr 2011 02:08 PM PDT A recent ChangeWave report surveyed 4,068 wireless subscribers and revealed that AT&T iPhone users see more than double the amount of dropped calls compared to their Verizon iPhone peers. AT&T iPhone users reported that 4.8% of calls were unexpectedly dropped on the network, a far cry from Verizon at just 1.8% of calls. This lines up with a survey of overall cell phone customers that found 4.6% of AT&T subscribers and 1.4% of Verizon customers have reported dropped calls. In addition, 46% of prospective iPhone 4 buyers say they will be going with Verizon, with 27% favoring AT&T and the remaining 27% still undecided. If you look back at the last survey from ChangeWave, it looks like the deciding factor for consumers on which carrier to choose is network quality and dropped calls. Based on these new results, it looks like AT&T (and their new T-Mobile spectrum, if the deal goes through) has a lot of work to do in terms of improving their network and lowering dropped calls if they want to stay competitive now that Verizon has the iPhone 4. It’s not all bad news, however. Consumer satisfaction was about even, with Verizon showing 82% of iPhone users being very satisfied with their device compared to AT&T iPhone users at 80%. The iPhone has historically held much higher consumer satisfaction ratings than smartphone competitors like RIM and Motorola, so this didn’t come as much of a surprise to us. Are you planning on buying an iPhone 4 soon? Which carrier will you be going with, and why? Sound off in the comments below! Element Case Vapor Pro for iPhone 4 Posted: 05 Apr 2011 02:01 PM PDT The Element Case Vapor Pro is the Lamborghini Reventon of iPhone 4 cases — cold carbon-colored aluminum chassis over space-aged, antenna insulation. And this year is works as good as it looks; on my review unit I didn’t drop a bar in over a week of constant testing. Not one, not ever. So while it may still look like a hypercar, it performs even better. There have been other improvements to the limited edition as well. The bottom has been cut wider to allow for a greater range of dock connectors. An extra portly Monster Cable still might not fit but I had no problems with any recent car or A/V connector I threw at it. The special edition comes in a box that includes the bumper, a carbon-fiber printed adhesive back protector, 2 extra screws (very welcome), a certificate of authenticity, and a newly re-designed key for screwing the case on and off. Now, instead of a simple bent bar you get a very nice keychain that twists open to reveal the tool. Since it takes a tool to put the Vapor Pro on or take it off, having it handy is paramount should you want to switch to a charge case, put it in a car or A/V mount, or just clean it. But the Vapor Pro has never been about convenience any more than it’s been about economics. Like the Reventon, it’s purely about possession. If you want a Vapor Pro, you know it.

Apple asks Toyota to pull Scion theme from Cydia Posted: 05 Apr 2011 12:57 PM PDT Apple has asked Toyota to pull the Scion theme that was released via Cydia as part of their recent advertising campaign. Modymyi, who hosts the theme for Toyota’s marketing company, received the request to pull the theme:
That the theme was released at all surprised a lot of users in the jailbroken community — Jailbreak is not typically something that’s recognized by larger companies. I personally have to give Toyota marketing props for going that far. Seeing a large company interact with our jailbreak community shows that jailbreak has come a long way since the days of Installer. I’m assuming Toyota probably utilizes iAd and in order to maintain a good relationship with Apple, they’ll pull the theme. I’m not surprised Apple requested it be taken down. Are you? TiPb Asks: Will there be an iOS 4.4? Posted: 05 Apr 2011 11:53 AM PDT If, as rumor suggests, iOS 5 won’t be previewed this spring as it has in years past, and is instead only shown off at WWDC 2011 in June and “>released sometime in the fall, will there be an iOS 4.4 to tide us over in the meantime? If there is, what features would you expect it to have? There almost certainly won’t be anything major like non-obtrusive notifications, file repositories, or any of the other iOS 5-level tent poles we’ve asked for, but network AirPrint, custom text and email tones, landscape week view in calendar, folder setup saving, keeping you in the App Store after you start a download — any number of small improvements, really. What do you think, will there be an iOS 4.4 and if so, what would you like to see in it? TiPb Asks: Will there be an iOS 4.4? is a story by TiPb. This feed is sponsored by The iPhone Blog Store. |
Spot the fakery: 128GB iPod touch 5 edition Posted: 05 Apr 2011 11:36 AM PDT There’s fake, there’s really fake, then there’s fakety fake fake and while no one outside Apple can ever be certain, one look at the almost-certainly-not 128GB iPod touch 5 shots above and about all we’re left to ask is how many points of fake fakery can you spot? Griffin PowerJolt dual USB charger for iPhone – accessory review Posted: 05 Apr 2011 10:55 AM PDT The Griffin PowerJolt dual USB charger solves an age old problem: you and your significant other have both depleted the batteries on your iPhone and yet your car only offers one charging socket. Who gets to use it? Or worse: you’re in the middle of that big family summer trip and not only have both parents worn down their iPhones, all the kids in the back are near empty on their iPod touches as well. Do you get your internet or do they get the movies that keep them quiet and you sane for the remainder of the trip? While I can’t claim the Griffin PowerJolt dual USB charger will save relationships and family trips, this simple adapter will at least hold power hungry creatures at bay for twice as long. Read on to find out how!
The Griffin PowerJolt dual USB charger is different from the PowerJolt Plus I looked at last time, which let you pass through a second car adapter. The PowerJolt Dual is much simpler in a way — an adapter for the power socket in your car capped by two USB plugs. Just plug in the USB to Dock cable that came with your iPhone or iPod touch and you’re off and charging. In my tests with both an iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS there didn’t seem to be any appreciable loss of charging power due to the shared connection. Both iPhones got to 80% quickly and then topped off to 100% in about as long as it takes with the single chargers I’ve used in the past. (And I’m typically listening to music, using Google Maps, powering videos for the little ones in the back seats, or otherwise working while I charge.) This is just an adapter, so there’s no mount, no built in cable, and nothing else fancy in any way. Since it is simply USB in, you can also use it to charge your non-Apple gear as well, including other phones, devices, headsets, etc. That flexibility really comes in handy for family trips. If you have more devices than you have charging ports definitely take a look at the Griffin PowerJolt dual USB charger, available from the TiPb iPhone Accessory Store. Pros

Apple to announce iPhone 5 at a separate event in June? [Crazy rumors] Posted: 05 Apr 2011 06:10 AM PDT Korean news site ETNews claims Apple will hold a second event in June, separate from WWDC, to announced iPhone 5, and then release it in the fourth week of June. iPhone 5, the next model of iPhone 4, will be released on the coming 4th week of June. In the midst of the iPhone 5 postponement rumors, Apple has confirmed that iPhone 5 will be released as planned and it will be released simultaneously in Korea through SK Telecom and KT. While the source for the information is supposedly Apple, Apple never gives information out on future products or release dates. Even leaks from carriers are often — though not always — highly inaccurate. We’re tempted to file this one away under highly dubious for now, but given the recent rumors of iPhone 5 only launching in the fall, anything positive regarding a June announcement is worth thinking about!
