WWDC 2011 sells out in 10 hours!

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 06:02 PM PDT

It took weeks for WWDC 2009, days for WWDC 2010, but only 10 hours of WWDC 2011 to sell out. Needless to say that’s the fastest sell out time ever. That’s rock concert fast.

Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference was only just announced today, and is to take place from June 6th till June 10th at Moscone West.

What are we going to see at this years WWDC? Any Developers lucky enough to get a ticket?

Untethered iOS 4.3.1 jailbreak shown on video

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 01:56 PM PDT

Jailbreakers have been patiently waiting for an easier jailbreak option on iOS 4.3. We are already aware there are working exploits but no easy process has been released. Now it appears iOS developer Stefan Esser is showing off a working iOS 4.3.1 untethered jailbreak on video. For the demo, he used an iPod Touch fourth gen.

Don’t get your hopes up too high as he doesn’t plan to release it any time soon, if at all. He has stated before he has no intention of releasing a jailbreak tool but that he would offer up an untether solution. This may even be possible via a Cydia package. Hit the jump for a video of the jailbreak in action!

RadioShack will sell iPad 2 starting tomorrow, march 29th

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 01:54 PM PDT

According to a tip over at MacRumors (which has since been confirmed by store representatives), RadioShack will begin offering the iPad 2 for sale across 500 US retail locations starting tomorrow.

We are thrilled that iPad 2 will be available at 500 RadioShack locations across the country starting March 29! Details have been sent to these stores.

With online orders still pushing 3-4 weeks and most Apple Stores selling out shortly after receiving shipments, taking your chances at a 3rd party physical location like RadioShack has its benefits. With Apple adding RadioShack as a sales channel this may help ease strain on local availability across retail outlets, making it easier to pick one up without ordering online.

Any readers planning on hitting up your local RadioShack tomorrow? Let us know in the comments!

Why would Apple “delay” iPhone 5, iOS 5 to fall or 2012?

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 11:07 AM PDT

Why would Apple "delay" iPhone 5, iOS 5?

People with good sources at Apple are saying there will be no iOS 5 preview this April and no iPhone 5 in June and that might be so. However, many of the reasons being giving to support this idea are just… nebulous at best.

First, they aren’t “delays”. You can’t delay something that’s never been announced. We’ve already gone over why Apple not announcing hardware in the WWDC press release is meaningless — they never have announced hardware in WWDC press releases but have never-the-less shown off the new iPhone there ever since 2007.

There’s been some talk that with the Verizon iPhone launch, Apple doesn’t need “another” launch so soon this year. However, the Verizon iPhone launch was US only. For the rest of the world — and make no mistake, Apple sells globally — the Verizon iPhone launch was very literally a non-event.

A white iPhone 4 launch would be international but would also be for existing hardware — hardware originally announced in June 2010. It will make some buzz and get some sales, but it probably won’t provide significant enough momentum to really place-hold a June iPhone 5 launch.

What strategic reason could Apple have to delay iPhone 5? They aren’t waiting on LTE anymore than they waited on a Retina Display to release iPad 2. LTE is primarily a US-only, Verizon-only story and nothing to risk tens of millions of international unit sales on. Is there a feeling nothing besides LTE is “big” enough for an iPhone 5 bump? I’d argue an A5 chipset (2x performance, 9x graphics) is as significant as the bump from iPhone 3G to iPhone 3GS. Add in a 4-inch screen, HSPA+ radio (which would have wider support than LTE), metal back, etc. and Apple could easily release that in June as a much more impressive update. (Just don’t call it iPhone 4S.)

Would breaking with their past June release schedule change things up and keep the competition off balance? Maybe — if they released earlier than June. Releasing later doesn’t seem to provide as big a disruption, not when Android devices are already shipping or about to ship with NFC, dual-core chipsets (and built-in espresso makers for all I know…)

Same with iOS 5. Citing the “preview the future of OS X and iOS” line as an indicator we won’t get an April iOS 5 preview this year the way we got an April iOS 4 preview last year. (Because it will only be previewed at WWDC). However, Mac OS X Lion has already been previewed — has already been released in beta in fact. If OS X can be previewed before the WWDC “preview” then certainly so can iOS.

Apple could release this fall or they could release next year. They could be whispering that now to re-set expectations, or even just to throw said competition off guard. Apple could release iPhone 5 and iOS 5 at the September iPod + iTunes event but why would they? What advantage does it give them?

[Thanks to Phil Nickinson for the video suggestion!]

UPDATED: Will we get an iPhone 5 in June?

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 07:12 AM PDT

Will we get an iPhone 5 in June?

Will we get an iPhone 5 in June? We’ve gotten a new iPhone announced at WWDC every year since 2007 yet right after Apple announced this year’s WWDC rumors started to fly it would be new hardware free. Could these rumors be based on inside information, or could it just be en vogue to predict delays on all Apple products? iPad 2 was delayed, right? Only no, it wasn’t. Now rumor has it iOS 5 is delayed and iPhone 5 are delayed. Only will they be?

If there isn’t any inside information at play here than the crux of the “iPhone 5 delayed” rumors is Apple emphasizing software and not hardware in their WWDC 2011 announcement press release. Apple puts out one of these WWDC announcements every year, so let’s take a look:

  • WWDC 2010: Apple emphasizes iPad development and iPhone OS 4 (iOS 4), we get iPhone 4 [PR link]
  • WWDC 2009: Apple emphasizes Snow Leopard and iPhone OS 3.0 development, we get iPhone 3GS [PR link]
  • WWDC 2008: Apple emphasizes OS X Leopard and iPhone OS X, we get iPhone 3G [PR Link]
  • WWDC 2007: Apple emphasizes OS X, we get iPhone (pre-announced at Macworld) [PR link]

All those press releases emphasized software, no hardware, and yet we still got a new iPhone. Every year. So again, if Apple isn’t leaking news that there’s won’t be an iPhone 5 at WWDC in order to re-set expectations, then a WWDC press release in and of itself is meaningless as an indicator.

Rumors are fun. Rumors fill news cycles. However there’s a growing pattern of rumors about Apple product delays that just seem… increasingly inorganic. Rumor. Link. Smash rumor. Link. Rinse. Repeat.

iOS 5 and iPhone 5 may well be delayed. But I’ll believe it when I don’t see it.

UPDATE: Both TechCrunch (which has a mixed record) and the Loop (which has a good record) are saying no new hardware, including no iPhone 5, at WWDC this year.

UPDATE 2: John Paczkowski from All Things D is also suggesting expectations be re-calibrated.

Apple confirm WWDC 2011 will be June 6-10, future of iOS to be revealed

Apple has just confirmed, via a press release that the annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) event will take place June 6 through to June 10 at San Francisco's Moscone West.

"At this year's conference we are going to unveil the future of iOS and Mac OS," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. "If you are an iOS or Mac OS X software developer, this is the event that you do not want to miss."

While there have been rumors of iOS 5 not being released until the fall Apple typically shows off the final version of their new software at WWDC, and if they hold to pattern we should see the introduction of iPhone 5 as well. Let us know what you think in the comments!

iPhone hit by yet another daylight savings time alarm bug

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 06:09 AM PDT

Seems like Apple just can’t get their alarms to work consistently following time changes. The bug struck again, according to BBC News, as some iPhone owners in the UK were late for work this morning after the clocks moved forward an hour for British Summer Time. Similar problems occurred during the switch to and from standard time in North America, and following New Year.

This time the glitch is not with the iPhone's clock application but is affecting non-recurring alarms set within the iPhone’s calendar application. The alarms either go off one hour late, or not at all. We are not quite sure why anyone would want to set up a morning wakeup call in this way in the first place, but the bug could also affect agenda alarms too.

I am in the UK and my alarm went off without a hitch today and all my agenda reminders too. Did any of our UK readers experience any alarm related problems this morning? Let us know in the comments!

Apple removes Liquid Contact Indicators from iPad 2

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 06:03 AM PDT

Apple has removed the LCI's (Liquid Contact Indictors) from the iPad 2. We already know that Apple has relaxed its policies on water damage to various iPods. This we believe, is down to the unreliability of the indicators; false positives when no water damage has occurred. The sensors are supposed to activate when moisture comes into contact with them. This can then easily be spotted by an Apple representative, voiding your warranty.

The iPad 2 has none of these sensors. In the first generation iPad the sensors were located in the headphone plug and 30 pin dock connector. iPad2 has a redesigned headphone jack which does not have the sensors. The sensor are also missing from the dock connector.

The only way for Apple to check for water damage, according to the Genius Bar DB, is to check for corrosion in the SIM card tray.

So who is going to risk taking their iPad 2 into the bath now?
