Daily Tip: How to stop an app download/install in iOS 4.3

Daily Tip: How to stop an app download/install

Started downloading a big game or navigation app and need to stop the install and delete the app? If you’re running the new iOS 4.3 for iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad you’ve now got the ability to do just that. Sure you could always pause a download and you still can but sometimes you might just want the app gone, gone, gone. We’ll show you how to do it after the break!

Under iOS 4.3 if you start a big app download you can now stop it, cancel the install, and delete the app without having to wait for it to finish first. You can do this with small apps as well but they’re usually so quick it doesn’t make a big difference. 500MB to 1.5GB downloads — big difference! Now if you just want to pause the download you can still tap the app to do just that (and tap it again to continue the download) but here’s how to nuke it completely:

  1. Tap and hold the icon (any icon really) to enter Jiggly mode.
  2. When the X badge appears in the top left corner of the app icon, tap it.
  3. A notice will pop up asking you to confirm the delete, tap to confirm.iOS 4.3 features: Cancel app download/install
  4. That’s it.

Yes, it’s identical to deleting an app after it’s installed but the difference is you no longer have to wait for the install to finish first. Pre-emptive deletion is ours at last!

Apple: Consumer demand for the iPad 2 is amazing

Posted: 14 Mar 2011 10:22 AM PDT

iPad 2 boxes in Apple Store

The Loop was able to speak with Apple Spokesperson Trudy Muller today, who stated Apple saw consumer demand for the iPad 2 launch last Friday to be “amazing”.

"Demand for the next generation iPad 2 has been amazing," Apple spokesperson Trudy Muller, told The Loop. "We are working hard to get iPad 2 into the hands of every customer who wants one as quickly as possible."

Apple hasn’t announced how many iPad 2 units were sold over the opening weekend, but our guess is that Apple sold every single unit they were able to make and if they’d been able to make more, they’d have sold more. It took the original iPad 28 days to reach 1 million units. iPad 2 might easily have beaten that in a day.

What’s you guess? How many iPad 2s did Apple sell this weekend?

In-app Jailbreak warnings — should you worry?

Posted: 14 Mar 2011 10:15 AM PDT

It looks as if the popular Flipboard app for iPad has added a jailbreak warning in a recent update. Upon launching the app, users that are jailbroken see a pop up warning them of potential issues on a jailbroken device.

Is this anything to be concerned about? I’d highly doubt it. As far as I know, developers can implement a checker for do things like this but it isn’t anything new. Skype has been doing it for a long, annoying time already.

When a perturbed reader contacted Flipboard about his misgivings with this new practice, a Flipboard spokesperson had this to say,

"Dennis, we mention it only because Jailbroken iPads can cause conflicts with Flipboard and we can't offer support for all those variations. We're not trying to be the Borg."

I don’t personally believe this is going to be a huge issue or something a lot of developers will implement. If they did, I could see how it would become increasingly annoying to deal with the pop ups. What do you guys think? Is this the start of Apple finding a way to curb jailbreaking or is it just a mere annoyance some app developers are implementing on their own accord?

iPad 2 Smart Cover teardown

Posted: 14 Mar 2011 08:47 AM PDT

iPad smart case tear down

Yes iFixit went there — they not only did a teardown of iPad 2 they tore down the Smart Cover as well! Here are the highlights:

  • There are a total of THIRTY ONE magnets within the iPad 2 and Smart Cover: 10 magnets in the iPad 2, and a whopping 21 magnets inside the Smart Cover. They’re the reason why the cover works so well with the iPad 2.
  • We used magnetic viewing film to reveal the magnets before taking our stuff apart. The film has special properties that allow it to react to a magnet’s poles, and it worked wonders in showing the magnets hidden beneath the Smart Cover and iPad 2.
  • Sadly, none of the 31 magnets inside the devices had any special properties. All of them were the standard, two-pole kind, but they were arrayed in such a way that made clamping the Smart Cover to the iPad 2 quite easy.
  • The Smart Cover has one dedicated magnet that turns off the iPad 2’s screen. The rest are used to either clamp to the iPad on the right side (the far-right column of magnets), or to form the triangular shape used to create a stand for the iPad 2.
  • A steel plate on the far-left side of the Smart Cover attaches to 15 of the cover’s magnets (on the far-right) in order to form the triangular base. In fact, the majority of those 15 magnets are specifically there to assemble the triangular base. Only four of them actually clamp to the iPad 2 when the cover is in place. A steel-to-magnet bond is weaker than a magnet-to-magnet bond, and so they needed lots more magnets to prevent the case from literally falling apart during use.
  • The far-right row of magnets clamps the Smart Cover to the iPad 2. The magnets in the iPad 2 had their polarity displayed: + – + – . The alternating polarity of the magnets in the iPad 2 was complemented by the opposite alternating polarity of the magnets in the Smart Cover (- + – +), ensuring that the Smart Cover always sits in the same orientation on the iPad 2.
  • There’s also a row of magnets on the left side of both products. The iPad 2’s magnets are actually encased into the side of the device, and are used to securely clamp the iPad 2 to the Smart Cover’s frame. Interestingly, these magnets’ polarities were manually marked — a blue dash written with a marker — instead of having a machine stamp/engrave the polarity into them.
  • We just can’t keep these magnets off of one another! The iPad 2’s frame magnets made a solid two inch leap across the photo table towards the Smart Cover by the time we snapped a photo. Their attraction for one another is amazing!
  • It turns out that the Smart Cover doesn’t work nearly as well once you remove the magnets, steel plate, and plastic structural supports. Go figure!

Anyone surprised by these results?

Phil Schiller confirms that the white iPhone is coming in spring, but is it the iPhone 4?

Posted: 14 Mar 2011 06:41 AM PDT

Apple's Senior Vice President of Marketing, Philip Schiller has confirmed via his twitter account, that the white iPhone is still coming and will be available in spring 2011.

The white iPhone will be available this spring (and it is a beauty!).

This could be a cryptic message and it may not even refer to the white iPhone 4 as there is no mention of a specific model in his tweet. Schiller may even be referring to a white iPhone 5 which could appear before the end of spring. If we take June 21st as the start of summer and mix that with the likelihood that iPhone 5 will be announced at WWDC at the beginning of June. It may be possible to have it released before June 21st. This could then still be classed as spring. Of course this is pure speculation on our part but it would make much more sense than just releasing a white iPhone 4 at this late stage.

What do you think? Is Phil Schiller still talking about the iPhone 4 in white or could it be the iPhone 5? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

Apple tells UK Carriers that NFC will not be included in iPhone 5?

Posted: 14 Mar 2011 06:38 AM PDT

Despite recent rumors, NFC (Near Field Communication) may not be included in the iPhone 5, according to UK newspaper The Independent. The information apparently comes from sources at several of the largest UK mobile operators. They claim that Apple disclosed in meetings that it would not be included as Apple had concerns over the lack of a clear standard across the industry. NFC is an RFID-related technology that allows for secure, close range data transfer including but not limited to payment information.

The iPad 2 was rumored to have NFC, but this failed to materialize. Other rumors suggest that Apple may be working on its own type of NFC implementation that will link up with current iTunes accounts; this would be much more likely. Either way, it appears that we won't see anything until 2012 at the earliest.

Jailbreak for iPad 2 and iOS 4.3 coming our way courtesy of Comex?

Posted: 13 Mar 2011 07:44 PM PDT

Jailbreak developer chpwn posted the photo above from his Twitter account, crediting comex. As you can see, the device is obviously the iPad 2. There’s no question as to whether or not it’s running iOS 4.3.

Developer i0n1c already has a working jailbreak for iOS 4.3 but is currently working out kernel issues before releasing it. Whether or not comex will release his version sooner isn’t clear yet. It’s also not clear whether this version of an iOS 4.3 jailbreak will also work on other devices such as the iPhone 4. We also aren’t sure whether or not it’s tethered or untethered. The big news is that it’s apparently working on the iPad 2. (i0n1c’s jailbreak will not work on the iPad 2.)

While all you new iPad 2 owners patiently wait your beloved jailbreak, make sure you check out our jailbreak starter’s guide! How many of you out there plan on jailbreaking your iPad 2 the minute a jailbreak is released?
