South Korea getting GSM iPhone 4 under SK Telecom network

Posted: 09 Mar 2011 12:31 PM PST

South Korean carrier SK Telecom announced yesterday that it will begin offering the iPhone 4 on March 16th, further expanding the reach Apple has made in Korea and breaking the exclusivity KT Telecom previously held for the iPhone.

“SK Telecom is proud to offer iPhone 4 on the nation’s top network,” said So Jin-Woo, President of Platform Business and Co-CEO of SK Telecom. “Our customers will benefit from flexible tariff plans tailored to their unique usage needs along with a high level of customer care.”

Eager iPhone buyers can pre-register starting today from their website or at one of 1,500 authorized SK Telecom retail outlets. Although SK Telecom runs both CDMA and HSPA networks they have announced the iPhone 4 will function under their HSPA infrastructure.

Any readers in Korea planning on picking up an iPhone 4 on March 16th? Let us know in the comments!

Expect white iPhone 4 when you see it…

Posted: 09 Mar 2011 12:30 PM PST

White iPhone 4

Getting tired of white iPhone 4 rumors yet? How about white iPhone 4 rumors from analysts? No? Well then AppleInsider is reporting on comments from a securities analyst who claims Apple will begin ramping up production of the white iPhone 4 for a possible release in early April.

Apple is expected to begin production of its long-awaited iPhone 4 sometime this month, with shipments no later than early April, according to one analyst’s checks.

Since analysts are historically about as accurate as a coin toss, take this with a huge grain of salt and expect the white iPhone only when you see it go up for sale on Apple.com or at Apple retail. Or just toss a coin of your own and tell us when you think we’ll see the white iPhone!

Apple releases Xcode 4… via Mac App Store

Apple releases Xcode 4... via Mac App Store

Apple has released the final version of the all new Xcode 4 — the go-to tool for iOS development — and they’ve released it via the Mac App Store!

Here’s the link to go grab it, and the massive feature list is after the break! Anyone trying it out yet? If so, what do you think? Going to make me some great apps with it?

[$4.99 - Mac App Store link]

Xcode 4 provides everything developers need to create great applications for Mac, iPhone, and iPad. Xcode 4 is also available to members of the Mac and iOS Developer Programs from the Apple Developer website.

Xcode 4 has been streamlined to help you write better apps. It has unified user interface design, coding, testing, and debugging all within a single window. The Xcode IDE analyzes the details of your project to identify mistakes in both syntax and logic, it can even help fix your code for you.

Xcode 4 runs on Mac OS X Snow Leopard and includes the Xcode IDE, Instruments, iOS Simulator, the latest Mac OS X and iOS SDKs, and hundreds of powerful features:

Innovative tools to help you create great apps – Interface Builder is fully integrated as a design canvas within the Xcode IDE – The Assistant shows files related to what you’re editing, such as the header, superclass, or controller – The Version editor shows a live source code comparison through Git or Subversion history – Live Issues display errors as you type, and Fix-it can correct the mistakes for you – Apple LLVM compiler now includes full support for C++, in addition to C and Objective-C – The new LLDB debugging engine is faster and more memory-efficient than GDB – Instruments adds System Trace and new iOS instruments including OpenGL ES

Streamlined interface that is faster and easier to use – Design your interface side by side with the backing source code – Create connections from your GUI design directly to the related source code – Use tabs to organize your workspace, or double-click to open files in a new window – Schemes let you customize exactly how your app will build, run, profile, and deploy – Debugging and console views slide in without disturbing your place in the editor

Professional editor keeps you focused on your code – Click the Jump Bar at the top of the editor to instantly go to another file – View message bubbles to see errors, warnings, and other issues right beside the code – Use the ribbon on the left of the editor to fold your code, or highlight scope

Embedded Apple LLVM technology finds and fixes bugs for you – Analyzer travels countless code paths looking for logical errors before they become bugs – Live Issues underlines coding mistakes as you type with no need to build first – Fix-it can confidently correct mistakes for you with just a keystroke – Code completion for C, C++, and Objective-C is incredibly fast and accurate

Instruments for visual performance analysis – Compare CPU, disk, memory, and OpenGL performance as graphical tracks over time – Identify performance bottlenecks then dive deep into the code to uncover the cause – Monitor your app directly, or sample the entire system, with very little overhead

To test or deploy applications on an iOS device you must be a member of Apple’s iOS Developer Program. To submit your Mac or iOS apps to the App Store you must be a member of the Mac or iOS Developer Program. Some features may require Internet access.

iOS 4.3 brings MLB baseball, NBA basketball to Apple TV

Posted: 09 Mar 2011 11:07 AM PST

iOS 4.2 brings MLB baseball, NBA basketball to Apple TV

iOS 4.3 has a little surprise in store for Apple TV sports fans — integration of MLB baseball and NBA basketball. Sports has been one of the last strongholds of traditional broadcast, cable, and satellite. No longer.

Here’s the MLB news:

Enjoy select Spring Training games and a full slate of regular season games on Apple TV. Regular Season features include:

  • HD Quality (where available)
  • LIVE and archived games
  • Home and away broadcasts*
  • Quick navigation to run scoring plays or a particular at bat

On your Apple TV, sign in with the username and password associated with your MLB.TV subscription.

NBA hasn’t released any details yet but if you have league pass you should be good to go. The integration looks similar to Netflix — it’s built right in. Anyone trying it out yet?

[MLB, thanks everyone!]

Daily Tip: How to use iOS 4.3 Home Sharing

Posted: 09 Mar 2011 10:07 AM PST

iOS 4.3 features: Home Sharing

Wondering how to enable the new Home Sharing feature in OS 4.3 so you can stream your iTunes library from your Windows or Mac PC without having to sync? Apple introduced Home Sharing for PCs last spring in iTunes 9 and enabled it for the new Apple TV last fall but it took until now to get it on iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. However it requires a little setup. We’ll show you what to do after the break!

To enable Home Sharing on your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad running iOS 4.3:

  1. Make sure Home Sharing is enabled on iTunes on your Mac or Windows PC (you’ll find it under the advanced menu and you’ll need to login with your iTunes account to activate it) and is on the same Wi-Fi network as your device.
  2. Launch Settings on your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad
  3. Scroll down and tap on iPod
  4. Scroll down and enter your iTunes username and password under Home Sharing (if you enter the wrong information, you’ll get a popup telling you it can’t be enabled).
  5. Launch the iPod app
  6. Tap on More on the bottom tabs
  7. Tap on the new Shared icon at the bottom
  8. Tap on the computer name you want to access under Shared Libraries
  9. You’ll be taken “back” to the iPod app but you’ll now be seeing your PC’s library instead of your local device library (it can be a little confusing at first but the PC library name is written on top of the scroll list).
  10. Choose your music, TV, movies, or other media just as you would have previously, but it’ll now stream from your PC over Wi-Fi.
  11. To change back to your local device library, tap on More, tap on Sharing, and select your local device from the top of the list (you’ll see a checkmark next to whichever library is currently the active one).

That’s it! A little complex and it can be confusing, but it works and for media you only want access to occasionally, it can save you a lot of occasional syncing. If you have any questions or any Home Sharing tips to share, let us know in the comments!

Tips of the day will range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary. If you already know this tip, keep the link handy as a quick way to help a friend. If you have a tip of your own you’d like to suggest, add them to the comments or send them in to news@tipb.com. (If it’s especially awesome and previously unknown to us, we’ll even give ya a reward…)

Poll: What feature do you most wish Apple had added to iPad 2?

Posted: 09 Mar 2011 09:54 AM PST

As predicted, Apple released iPad 2 last week… pretty much as predicted. There really were no surprises — no Retina Display, no Thunderbolt or USB or SD port, no LTE or WiMax or HSPA+ radio, no 128GB of storage, no big photon camera or 3D display, no kickstand or cappuccino maker… Okay, I’m joking about some of those. Maybe.

But which one of those omissions irk you the most? What feature do you really wish Apple had added to iPad 2?

Vote in the poll above and let us know the details of your antici-pointment in the comments below!

Verizon iPhone Jailbroken to work on Cricket pay-as-you-go

So it looks like if you’re willing to Jailbreak your Verizon iPhone 4 and trust a Cricket dealer on the shadier shade of shady to flash it onto the Cricket Wireless network, you can leave Big Red and go to tiny chirp.

Anyone making the switch?

DODOCase — those wonderful moleskin style enclosures hand made with traditional book binding techniques in San Francisco — are coming for iPad 2 in multiple colors for $59.95 and even a special edition for $89.95. What’s more, when you place your pre-order you can choose to donate 10% of the price to one of the three charities — SFMADE, San Francisco Center for the Book (SFCB), or Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Sounds as good as they look.
