iPad 2 and iOS 4.3 state of the Jailbreak

Posted: 03 Mar 2011 01:03 PM PST

Will I be able to Jailbreak iPad 2 running iOS 4.3 when it launches? That’s a question on a lot of user’s minds. We already know the jailbreak community is working towards an iOS 4.3 jailbreak. What we “do” know is that a tool won’t go official until iOS 4.3 is out of beta and in the hands of consumers. Most of the reason behind this is so Apple doesn’t patch it in a last minute update.

Where the iPad 2 is concerned, it’s anyone’s guess whether or not the solution they’re currently working towards will definitely jailbreak the iPad 2. According to @p0sixninja, one of the main contributors of greenpois0n, they are hoping the SHAtter exploit will still be a viable solution on the iPad 2 as well.

While we wait for a definitive answer, check out our massive jailbreak guide and mingle with other fellow jailbreakers in waiting over in our TiPb jailbreak forums.

Photo Booth on iPad 2

Posted: 03 Mar 2011 01:00 PM PST

One of the new built-in apps for iPad 2 and iOS 4.3 is a Photo Booth app for use with its new cameras.

Things are about to get pretty twisted. Photo Booth takes snapshots of you and your friends in ways far from ordinary — from funny to artsy to really bizarre. Make a few faces, snap a few snaps, and see your wacky side.

The iPad 2 has two cameras, a front-facing VGA camera and a 720p HD rear-facing camera. According to Apple, Photo Booth uses the front-facing camera, but the screenshots seem to point to the ability of using the rear-facing camera as well.

Using Photo Booth is simple. Just hold up the iPad and snap away. When using the front-facing camera, Photo Booth will flash the screen white just prior to taking the photo to add light to your face, much like the Mac version of Photo Booth.

Once you’re done twisting up your face, doubling your head, or making yourself look like an alien, a comic book character, or an X-ray, share your photos via email or assign them as contact photos. Everything in Photo Booth is saved in your photo library, so sharing to Facebook, Twitter, or other social platforms will also be a breeze.

Photo Booth will be a fun addition to iPad 2 for children and adults alike. Are you looking forward to playing around with Photo Booth on the iPad 2?

Follow along for a few more screenshots!

Apple posts iOS 4.3 GM seed for iPhone, iPad, iPod touch

Apple posts iOS 4.3 GM seed for iPhone, iPad, iPod touch

Apple has posted the iOS 4.3 GM (gold master) build 8F190 for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch on their developer portal. While Apple TV was included in the iOS 4.3 betas, no GM has been posted for it at this time.

Unless there is a show-stopper level bug found in the GM, this is likely the same build that will be released to the public on March 11 alongside the iPad 2 in the US.

For more, see our iOS 4.3 walkthrough and if you spot anything new, let us know!

UPDATE: Yes, multitasking gestures are still in iOS 4.3 for iPad. You need to go to Xcode, click “enable for development”, enter your dev credentials, and then Gestures will show up in Settings. Apple likely wants developers to keep testing them but don’t think they’re ready for consumers yet.

Twitter for iPhone and iPad updated with Quick Bar

Posted: 03 Mar 2011 10:22 AM PST

Twitter for iPhone has been updated to 3.3 and includes a new Quick Bar to show trends without leaving your timeline.

  • Quick Bar, shows trends and other important things without leaving your timeline! Swipe the Quick Bar left/right to cycle through trends
  • Trends based on your location
  • Cleaner, redesigned Tweet compose screen.
  • Autocomplete @usernames and hashtags
  • Easier photo uploading
  • Find friends using your phone’s contacts
  • Improved DM conversation view, now works similar to SMS/Chat
  • Cleaned up preferences
  • Bug fixes

The mystery is knowing which bugs are fixed. One of the biggest bugs I’ve experienced and seen others complain about is the incorrect badge count – the notification badge always says “1″ regardless of how many new mentions or DMs you have. The other big one is that DM’s show up as new even though they have been read. Hopefully these bugs have been fixed.

If you pick this one up, let us know what you think!

Rogers to offer iPad 2 plans, iOS 4.3 personal hotspot free on 1GB+ data plans

Rogers to offer iPad 2 plans, iOS 4.3 personal hotspot free on 1GB+ data plans

AT&T isn’t the only one confirming iOS 4.3 personal hotspot support, with Rogers (and subsidiary Fido) also letting us know their plans — and keeping it free!

Mobile hotspot on iOS 4.3 will be enabled on the Rogers network and will follow our current tethering policy. This feature will be available at no additional charge for Rogers and Fido customers who subscribe to data plans of 1GB and above.

That’s great for iPhone 4 users but what about iPad 2? Same deal as the original iPad with 250MB for $15 or 5GB for $35 (or you can use their data sharing but they aren’t great value for the $30 surcharge).

So great news for personal hotspot, good news for iPad 2!

Personal Hotspot with iOS 4.3 coming to AT&T on March 11th

Personal Hotspot with iOS 4.3 coming to AT&T on March 11th

AT&T confirmed yesterday that they will be supporting the Personal Hotspot feature that already is available to Verizon iPhone 4 customers with the release of the iOS 4.3 software on March 11th. To enable this feature you will need to subscribe to the DataPro Hotspot/Tethering plan which carries a $45 per month fee. For that you will get 4GB of data to share between your normal data usage, tethering, and the Hotspot feature.

At least AT&T did not make you wait for this feature as they did with tethering feature that made it’s debut around the word with iOS 3.0. So how many of you will are will to fork over some extra hard earned cash for this feature? And for those of you with grandfathered into unlimited iPhone data, are you willing to give that up?

[Electronista, Rogers Red Board, Thanks A!]

RIM considering bringing BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) to iPhone?

RIM considering bringing BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) to iPhone?

BGR is reporting that BlackBerry maker RIM is looking into offering their BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) service on other platforms, including the iPhone’s iOS.

As far as what Android and iOS users can look forward to, we've been told RIM will offer stripped down versions of the BBM experience BlackBerry owners know and love. That way, Android and iOS users can communicate with practically anyone who has a smartphone using BBM, but they might not be able to share photos, location, or videos (when RIM crosses that bridge). Users who want the full BlackBerry Messenger experience will still need a BlackBerry smartphone to get it. At the same time, RIM could own the entire messaging app category on every major smartphone OS platform and could potentially draw new users in because it has given them a taste of what BlackBerry Messenger is all about.

This is perhaps in response to apps like Kik, Whatsapp, and Facebook’s newly acquired Beluga offering very BBM-like apps on multiple platforms already, threatening to take over the space created by BlackBerry.

CrackBerry Kevin wrote an impassioned article about this several weeks ago and TiPb followed suit to see how popular the idea might be.

Android seems likely to get it first — um, why? — but iPhone could be on the roadmap.

Let RIM know whether you want it or not in the comments!

Daily Tip: When, where, and how can you get an iPad 2?

Posted: 03 Mar 2011 06:20 AM PST

iPad 2: When, where, and how can you get it?

Trying to figure out just when, where and how exactly you can get your hands on an iPad 2? Apple announced it yesterday and we’re getting a lot of questions about when it ships and in which countries, whether or not you can pre-order it, and what time exactly it goes on sale.

Stick with us after the break and we’ll help you sort out when you can get your precious new iPad 2, where it will be on sale, and how you can buy it.

When can you get iPad 2?

When you can get an iPad depends on where you live.

Will there be pre-orders?

No. It doesn’t look like there will be any pre-orders for iPad 2. You’ll only be able to order online or go buy it at the store on release day.

USA: March 11, 5pm

iPad 2 goes on sale in the US on March 11 at 5pm. That’s right, it won’t be available when stores open but only at 5pm. There may still be lineups — since you can’t pre-order we’re guessing there will be! — so you may want to get there early, even pull an all-nighter but you won’t be able to buy until 5pm on March 11.

International: Starting March 25

iPad 2 goes on sale on March 25 in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK. Apple hasn’t said anything about pre-orders or the exact time it will go on sale in those countries but is only providing a “Notify me” form so they can send you details later.

According to what Steve Jobs said during the iPad 2 event other countries — like the rest of Asia, Africa, etc.! — will roll out over the course of the year. No dates have been announced yet. Since iPads will work internationally if you really can’t wait and don’t mind buying it in another country, you can always travel to get one earlier. (Just keep in mind factors like customs/import duties, AppleCare coverage, etc.)

Where and how can you get iPad 2?

You have a few choices to make when it comes to where and how you get your iPad 2.

Online

Apple Online will begin taking orders in the US on March 11, the same day it goes on sale in stores. You won’t face the crowds or the lines but you will have to wait a few days for delivery (no way of knowing how long exactly, usually 2-5 days). It’s possible other retailers will offer it for order online as well, like Best Buy. We’ll keep this list updated so check back often:

In store

Apple Retail Stores and Best Buy in the US will be carrying iPad 2 on launch day. It’s possible other retailers will also be carrying it so check back here and we’ll keep the list updated:

  • Apple
  • Best Buy

If you go to a store on launch day you will face those crowds and lines but that can be a fun experience and you will get your brand new iPad immediately.

More

If you’re trying to figure out how to sell your old iPad first, we’ve got you covered there as well.
