Regarding Verizon listing Apple iOS under Smartphones

Over the last couple days we’ve received tons of tips about Verizon adding Apple iOS to their Shop for Smartphones menu (see above). No doubt fueled by recent rumors, the assumption is that it’s a harbinger of the near-legendary Verizon iPhone.

It’s sometimes clickable and sometimes not. When it is clickable it gives you a list of Androids, BlackBerrys and such. That strikes me as either brilliant if shady competitive marketing (hey, you’re here for iPhone? Click me! Here you go, they’re like iPhones…!) or just some screwy code that ought only be enabled for tablets, namely iPad + Mifi.

Either way, you still can’t get an iPhone on Verizon. Yet. So relax. Breathe. Stand down. Unlock and unload. They’re only on the 4th Seal and there won’t be silence in rumorland for a few more still…

[Thanks Kevin!]

Daily Tip: How to change the email account you're sending from on iPhone and iPad [Beginner]

Have more than one email account set up on your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad and curious how to change the one you’re sending from? It’s simple to do if not obvious, but we’ll show you how after the break!

Sometimes Mail may use your default email address for a new message and you’d rather use a different one, or sometimes you might be replying to an email and want to change your sent-from address. Here’s how:

  • Tap on your email address in the From: field
  • You’ll see more options open up (like cc: and bcc:).
  • Tap on your email address again
  • A selector will pop up listing all your addresses, with a checkmark next to the one that’s currently set.
  • Scroll through the selector to find the alternate address you want to send from.
  • Tap to set the new address.
  • Tap on the Subject: field (or anywhere off the selector) to get back to your mail.

That’s it, you’re done! If you have any other mail tips, or any questions about this tip, let us know in the comments!

Tips of the day will range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary. If you already know this tip, keep the link handy as a quick way to help a friend. If you have a tip of your own you'd like to suggest, add them to the comments or send them in to dailytips@tipb.com. Apple TV iOS 4.1.1 update now available

Posted: 14 Dec 2010 01:42 PM PST

Head on over to your Apple TV (2010)’s Update Software feature and give it a click because it looks like Apple has just released iOS 4.1.1 (or iOS 4.2.1 — can Apple just nail that down already?). We’re guessing this is a bug fix release, hopefully to address some of the HDCP and Netflix errors we’ve been seeing.

If you get the update and notice anything else new, let us know!

[Thanks Joshua!]

Google Voice app updated, now supports iPad, iPod touch

Posted: 14 Dec 2010 12:07 PM PST

Google Voice

Google has updated Google Voice app for iPhone, extending support to the iPad and iPod touch.

At the top of the list was adding support for iPod Touch and iPad. Starting today, you can download a new version of Google Voice that lets you use all the features of the app on these devices, such as sending and receiving free text messages.

It looks like Google hasn’t allowed users to use their iPad or iPod touch as a calling device but you still get a lot of great features to play with including the ability to initiate a Google Voice call from your iPod touch by sending it to your iPhone (or any desired number). Using a new feature called Click2Call, all you do is tap the Call button in Google Voice and select which phone you’d like it to ring to. Google Voice will then call the selected device and connect your call. Pretty neat!

Full updated list after the break. Any readers planning on grabbing this for their iPad or iPod touch? Anyone wish they’d turn on a VoIP option already? Let us know in the comments!

[iTunes, Google Voice Blog]

  • Support for iPod Touch
  • iPod Touch and iPhone can now make calls using Click2Call
  • Do Not Disturb setting
  • Text forwarding is automatically disabled when registering for Push notifications
  • Added Text forwarding setting to the app
  • Easier to make calls from the phone Address Book
  • Removed annoying OK dialog every time you send an SMS
  • Fixed crashes caused by text messages that begin with a space character
  • Fixed bug that caused the entire Inbox to load
  • Fixed bug that caused Contact pictures to get mixed up
  • Improved access to Contact groups
  • Improved speed of Contact search

How to hack AirPlay video back to your Mac

Posted: 14 Dec 2010 12:03 PM PST

AirPlay hacked back to your Mac

TUAW’s Erica Sadun, if ever a wiz there was, has once again hacked away at Apple’s iOS 4.2 AirPlay feature and created an app called AirPlayer that gets it to stream video from iPhone or iPad to the Mac.

What AirPlayer does is create and advertise a custom Bonjour AirPlay service that pretends to be an Apple TV. Bonjour is Apple’s zero configuration networking solution for allowing devices and applications to communicate with each other over local area networks. When Apple created AirPlay, it basically set up a new way for Apple TV to interact with iOS using Bonjour communications.

She’s not a Windows dev but says in theory the same thing should be possible on that platform and perhaps Linux as well.

You don’t need to Jailbreak to try this out (the app runs on your Mac, not your iPhone or iPad) but if you’re not Jailbroken and running AirVideoEnabler you’ll be limited to YouTube and iPod/Videos for your streaming (AirVideoEnabler lets 3rd party apps stream AirPlay video as well).

If you want to try it out, you can get AirPlayer from Erica’s website, below. Video after the break!

CNN launches an iPad app

Posted: 14 Dec 2010 09:07 AM PST

CNN has just launched an iPad app that allows users to browse stories, read breaking news, as well as share stories via Twitter or Facebook. The app has a couple different views built in so you can choose to either quickly view stories or view a complete, interactive slide show.

The CNN app also allows you to leave comments and engage with the rest of the CNN community. As live video is available, you’ll also be able to stream that when breaking news occurs. If you find a story you’d like to save for later or show someone else, you can save stories for offline reading as well.

I personally use an RSS app to aggregate all my news feeds into one easy to read place. I really only ever jump into individual news apps when I want to view video or leave comments. It’s nice that CNN is giving us that option though.

You can download the CNN for iPad app via iTunes now for free. Any of you really looking forward to trying this out?

iPad, iPhone 4 lead Google 2010 consumer electronics search queries

Posted: 14 Dec 2010 07:10 AM PST

Google’s annual Zeitgeist reports has come out and shows Apple’s iPad has taken the number one position for consumer electronic search queries in 2010. It also took the number two overall fastest rising search query behind Steve Jobs’ favorite thing…chat roulette. Apple’s iPhone 4 came in in the number two position in the consumer electronics category.

The iPad has had quite the year in 2010 taking home many honors which include the number three spot of the top 10 obsessions of 2010 and the number one spot on Time Magazine’s top 10 gadget list of 2010. Not too shabby for a product that analysts claimed would be lucky if it sold 1 million units by the end of the year.

Any guesses as to what will lead the search results next year?
