New Cydia tweak Graviboard adds zero gravity to your Springboard! [Jailbreak]

Graviboard, a springboard tweak for jailbroken iPhones and iPads, has just been released on Cydia. This tweak is quite stunning visually as it brings different levels of gravity to your springboard icons. The level of gravity (earth, moon, zero gravity, etc.) and how the tweak is activated can be set in the settings menu. While this tweak is activated you can also interact with your icons by grabbing them and throwing them against each other. You even have the option of being able to launch your apps while they are flying around. Graviboard can be purchased on Cydia right now for $2.99.

Video after the break. Let us know what you think of this latest Jailbreak tweak by leaving us a comment below!

Smartphones and tablets to eclipse PC sales in 18 months?

Posted: 07 Dec 2010 03:13 PM PST

iPhone and iPad

IDC analysts have estimated that smartphone and tablet sales will soon surpass worldwide PC sales with help of the Apple iPhone and iPad.

18 months from now, combined smartphone and tablet sales will eclipse the PC, it claims, with both categories hovering in the mid-400 million range. [...] overall it represents a shift from the open-ended, flexible, and powerful PC to the narrow, task-specific, app-driven nature of the iOS and Android kind.

More specific estimates are focused on skyrocketing tablet sales going into 2011 and 2012 from growing interest in products like the iPad, which currently holds a dominant position in the market.

Gartner’s guess is 55 million tablets next year, while IDC has a more conservative estimate of 42 million, but both predict a sharp, exponential rise in the following years.

With rumors of the iPad 2 shipping as soon as February, it seems Apple’s foothold will remain firmly placed among a storm of new competitors.

Do you think smartphone and tablet sales could actually overtake that of the PC so soon? Sound off in the comments below!

Google’s Andy Rubin comments on iTunes and iPhone, shows off Android 3.0 tablet

Posted: 07 Dec 2010 10:25 AM PST

Yesterday at D:DiveIntoMobile, Google’s Android chief, Andy Rubin had some interesting comments about iTunes and iPhone, and showed off Motorola’s upcoming Android 3.0 “Honeycomb” tablet. When asked if Google had any plans to start their new music store off with downloads, similar to how Apple’s iTunes does it, Rubin’s response was quick and to the point:

We could build that 10 times over… (it’s) not the right experience.

Rubin also said he would like to see users have an intimate connection to music again like he had as a young kid when he would go to music stores to purchase albums. On the subject of iPhone:

I think everybody is embracing the iPhone, I think that Apple makes good consumer products and focuses on a robust consumer experience and consistency across applications. More recently, I see them getting involved in the other end of the mobile spectrum, which is services–the App Store, iTunes, etc. I think that when you move into the services business, it creates a lot of new opportunities. If the operating system is the razor, then services are the blades.

Rubin was also asked if Apple has the DNA to make it in the services business.

My assumption is Apple is a company that learns from its mistakes.

What with Apple’s massive data center about to go online, and rumors of iTunes.com still in the news, could he be right?

Daily Tip: How to rent TV episodes on iPad with iOS 4.2 [Beginner]

Posted: 07 Dec 2010 08:46 AM PST

Interested in renting TV episodes on your iPad running the shiny new iOS 4.2? If you’re in the US, you’re in luck. While not all TV networks are on board yet there’s still a decent amount of programming and the ability to download it and watch it offline if you’re going on a road trip or flying cross country is very convenient. Find out how after the break!

You can now rent TV episodes directly on your iPad for just 99¢ each. Use iTunes and simply tap a show’s View button to see the Buy and Rent options. Tap Rent to start the download and the rental clock — 30 days to start watching and 48 hours to finish once you start. Use the Video app to view downloaded episodes. And if you’ve upgraded your iPad to iOS 4.2.1 you can use AirPlay to stream episodes directly to other screens on the same wireless network via Apple TV.

Hopefully more networks (and more countries!) will support the service soon. If you’ve used it, let us know how it worked for you, and if you prefer getting your TV from somewhere other than iTunes rentals, let us know where!

Bonus tip: TV rentals also work on iPhone and iPod touch.

TiPb TV 5: To Jailbreak or not to Jailbreak?

Posted: 07 Dec 2010 08:21 AM PST

To Jailbreak or not to Jailbreak, that is the question. Or more importantly, who should consider Jailbreaking and who would be better off with an Apple-pure iPhone. Most of our TiPb regulars have already know where they stand but for new users it can be a big decision. That’s the topic for the fifth episode of our new, conversational video show, TiPb TV!

Rene and I go over the benefits and drawbacks of Jailbreak, the ability to customize, run Cydia apps and tweaks, and use your iPhone the way you want vs. the stability, protection, and simplicity Apple provides.

Maybe you want an iPhone that “just works” and you never have to spend any time on, or maybe you want to spend your time tweaking every last little pixel and setting. Either way, if you’re considering Jailbreaking but just aren’t sure check out the latest episode of TiPb TV and we’ll help you decide!

iTunes sending out free movie rental codes

iTunes sending out free movie rental codes

Apple started sending out free iTunes movie rental codes to US iTunes users today. The promo code will allow you to rent one of the 8,500 available movies.

Redeem your free movie rental below, and start watching one of your favorite movies on iTunes. Watch what you want, when you want. Enjoy movie rentals on your iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch, the all-new Apple TV, or on your computer. You have 30 days from the moment you rent a movie to start watching, and 24 hours to finish it.

Apple has not indicated the reason behind this promotion, but we’re not complaining – we’ll gladly accept a free rental. Perhaps this is Apple’s way of saying “Happy Holidays”.

Who’s received a free rental code? What do you plan to rent? Do you plan to watch it on your iPhone or iPad?

iPad 2 to ship by the end of February 2011? [Rumor]

Posted: 07 Dec 2010 06:21 AM PST

Digitimes is claiming that the Foxconn Electronics plant in Shenzhen will start shipping iPad 2 in 100 days. They claim initial shipments should reach 400,000 – 600,000 units. The rumor comes from Taiwan based component makers but has not been confirmed in any way by Foxconn.

The sources claim that the iPad 2 will ship by the end of February 2011. Apple had planned to start mass manufacturing of the iPad 2 in January however the device's firmware is still in the testing stage and this has now been delayed by Apple.

Apple tend to keep device releases to a set yearly schedule. We know the iPhone tends to be released in June, new iPod devices in September and if last year is a basis, iPad 2 would be released in April. This would give Apple plenty of time to build up a substantial inventory to satisfy what will surely be a huge demand.

This time we will see current iPad users upgrading to more advanced hardware as well as others potential users who have held off buying the first generation iPad, finally taking the plunge.

We’ve already begun to imagine what new features iPad 2 will boast. I’m expecting an announcement in January, I can't wait, what about you?

Apple now selling iPad gift cards

Posted: 07 Dec 2010 06:19 AM PST

Apple Stores are now selling iPad gift cards. Actually, let’s rephrase that – Apple now has the option to package Apple gift cards in a giant piece of cardboard labeled as an “iPad Gift Card” and stamped with a picture of an iPad. The gift card itself is the same one Apple has always offered – sliver with a white Apple logo in the center.

The interesting thing to note is that this means iPads are now able to be purchased with a gift card. In the past, it was required to have a debit or credit card to buy an iPad (as with iPhones), so Apple must have changed their policy.

What I don’t understand, is why anyone would give an iPad gift card instead of an actual iPad. Call me crazy, but if I was gifting an iPad, I’d want to witness the recipient taking it out of the box and using it for the first time. An iPhone gift card makes perfect sense since activation with a carrier is required, but for an iPad? Why?
