SlingPlayer Mobile for iPad

Sling Media has released SlingPlayer Mobile for the iPad, allowing users to watch content streaming from their cable service provider, DVR or TiVo device anywhere they are. Users of the popular SlingBox can purchase the app in the App Store for $29.99.

SlingPlayer was initially released for iOS back in January, but was tied to the iPhone and iPod Touch. This isn’t a universal binary either but a whole new app so yes, if you already have it for iPhone you do have to buy it again for iPad.

Let us know if you think the big 9.7-inch iPad screen makes it worth the money, and if it does, how the app is working for you in the comments below!

Dev tip: Hacking AirPlay for 3rd party apps

Dev tip: Hacking AirPlay for 3rd party apps

iOS developer extraordinaire and TUAW blogger Erica Sadun decided to take a look into iOS 4.2’s AirPlay feature (and see if she could figure out why it was restricted to audio-only outside Apple’s YouTube and iPod/Video apps (i.e. there are only audio AirPlay API currently available to 3rd party App Store developers). Here’s what she’s found so far:

Having gotten this proof of concept working, there’s still a lot left to get done to transform this into a stable solution that works with general applications. Keep in mind that you’ll be working with unpublished APIs, so the above classes and code are not App Store Safe. That’s why we have a jailbreak world, after all.

The bad news is it looks like it will take an “Act of Apple” to get proper, video-supporting AirPlay API into developers hands and into App Store apps. (So developers, get thee to the bug report system and ask for this to be fixed and surfaced asap). The good news, at least for now, is that Steven Troughton-Smith has reduced the process to a single line of code, eliminating the YouTube work-around.

Yes, it still won’t be App Store safe, but it’s jailbreak friendly, works flawlessly, and suggests only a single item that Apple could move to a public API to open up this functionality to developers. What’s more, with a little screen scraping or off-screen layer manipulation and a clever use of AVFoundation, you can probably have games working out to Apple TV almost immediately.

Indeed…! Check out her full post via the link below for details on how it all works.

Beginner tip: How the Home Button works under iOS 4.2 for iPad

Posted: 24 Nov 2010 09:41 AM PST

Just update your iPad to iOS 4.2 only to discover the Home Button now works in a totally different way? If you’re not an iPhone or iPod touch user already experienced with iOS 4, it can be confusing. Apple isn’t afraid to change things up and we’re not afraid to help you figure out just what exactly they’ve changed. Follow along after the break for all the single, double, and triple click tricks!

Here’s a complete rundown of how the Home Button works under iOS 4.2 for iPad, including what’s the same as before and what’s new with the update.

Single click Home Button

  • If your iPad is sleeping and you click the Home Button it will wake up and ask you to slide to unlock.
  • If you’re in an app like Safari, Mail, Angry Birds, etc. and you click the Home Button you’ll return to the Home Screen with all your app icons.
  • If you’re on your second or third Home Screen and click the Home Button you’ll return to your main (first) Home Screen.
  • If you’re on your main (first) Home Screen and click the Home Button you’ll go to Spotlight Search.
  • If you’re on Spotlight Search and click the Home Button you’ll go back to your main (first) Home Screen.

Double click Home Button

  • If you’re iPad is sleeping but still playing music or media (iPod app, iTunes app, etc.) and you double click the Home Button the iPod controls will pop up on the lock screen so you can play, pause, skip, etc.
  • If you’re on the Home Screen or using an app and you double click the Home Button the multitasking Fast App Switcher Dock will be revealed so you can quickly switch between apps or swipe over to the audio, brightness, orientation lock, and other widget controls.

Bonus tip: iOS 4.2 changes the hardware orientation lock switch to a mute switch so you need to use the widget above to do orientation lock now. (Steve please fix this!)

Triple click Home Button

  • If you have enable accessibility options in Settings and your triple click the Home Button you’ll either reverse the screen colors, go into zoom mode, or get a popup asking which of those options (or VoiceOver) you wish to turn on. (You decide what happens in settings).

iPad accessibility options

Barrel tweak brings cube transitions to iPhone SpringBoard [Jailbreak]

Barrel tweak brings cube transitions to iPhone SpringBoard [Jailbreak]

Jailbreak developer Aaron Ash released his latest tweak today in the Cydia app store named Barrel which makes your iPhone SpringBoard appear as if it is part of a 3D cube when you switch between pages. The premise of this tweak may be pretty simple but it looks stunning when installed. To make changes you can go into the Settings app and select between making your icons appear as if they are on the outside of the 3D cube or on the inside of the 3D cube.

The only caveat to this tweak is that it requires at least iOS 4.x and it will not work on the iPad at this time. If you are on an iPhone or iPod touch and are currently jailbroken, go check this out and pick it up for $2.99 now in the Cydia app store.

Check out a video of Barrel in action after the break and let us know what you think. Will you be using it?

Lego Harry Potter Years 1-4 for iPhone and iPad – app review

Posted: 24 Nov 2010 09:39 AM PST

YouTube Link

Lego Harry Potter Years 1-4 for iPhone and iPad is definitely a game any Harry Potter fan should check out. From the very beginning you’ll be completely immersed in the magical world of Harry we’ve all come to know and love. You’ll start the game off playing as Harry. As you progress, you’ll unlock more characters to play as. The controls are easy to learn and before you know it you’ll be casting spells, brewing potions, and zooming around on a broomstick!

When you start the game you’ll start from the very beginning. There are cut scenes every so often as you progress through the actual story line. To skip cut scenes, you can simply double tap. I personally don’t typically skip them as I find them quite enjoyable. Most of the music in the game is music you find in all the movies, so if you enjoy the scores to the movies, you’ll love it. If you didn’t, well you can always turn the music off in settings.

After you hit your first save point in the game, you can quit to the lobby area. In the lobby, you’ll see four doors which represent the 4 books the game covers – Sorcerer’s (Philosopher’s) Stone, Chamber of Secrets, Prisoner of Azkaban, and Goblet of Fire. Once you complete one story line, you’ll gain access to the next. If you ever want to go back to a previous story, you can jump back to the lobby and go back. I find myself doing this whenever I get stuck. I’ll go back and find hidden secrets or items I didn’t find the first time around.

The lobby also contains an area to view your Lego models as you unlock them. This area is located off to the left. Down the stairs you’ll see an hour glass. When you stand in front of it, it will tell you how much game play time you’ve accumulated as well as the percentage of the game you’ve beaten. To the left from the bottom of the stairs, if you stand in front of the Weasley twins, you can browse the shop and buy items such as cut scenes, characters, and more with the Lego coins you’ve collected on your journey. The lobby is also where you’ll be able to customize your character (clothes, features, etc).

The overall gameplay experience is great. The difficulty level increases at an even pace as you learn new spells and play through mini quests. As you go on, the game can be a little difficult at times. To me, that just means it will keep me busy for longer. As much as I love games like Cut the Rope, it didn’t keep me occupied for very long.

I’m really enjoying playing through this game and I’d have to say I’m impressed with the quality. Sometimes moving your character around can be a little glitchy if you get stuck on the side of an object, but once you get the hang of it, it’s all cake after that. If any of you TiPb readers out there picked up this game, let us know what you think in the comments as well!

Pros

  • Easy to learn controls
  • Gameplay difficulty increases at a pretty steady pace
  • Tons of secrets and items to unlock that will keep you busy
  • Music and cut scenes are cute and fun to watch in Lego form
  • Graphics are astounding, especially on iPhone 4 and iPad

Cons

  • Moving your character around can sometimes be glitchy, not very often though
  • Initially loading the game is somewhat annoying as there are about 8 banners before the actual click to begin game finally comes up
  • Save points are rather far apart, if you quit before one, you lose your progress. Keeping the game multitasked is an easy way to solve this issue though

Does iOS 4.2 make you feel like you have “a whole new iPad”?

Posted: 24 Nov 2010 07:12 AM PST

iOS 4.2 is a whole new iPad?

Apple is sending out an email telling iPad owners that the just released iOS 4.2 will make them feel like they have “a whole new iPad”:

The free iOS 4.2 Software Update has so many features, downloading it is like getting a new iPad. Just connect your iPad to your computer to get new features like multitasking, folders, wireless printing, and more.

They obviously want to encourage everyone to get on the latest firmware but given how great a difference iOS 4.2 for iPad is compared to iOS 3.2, is it really a much bigger deal than usual? If you’ve updated already, what do you think of the difference?

iOS 4.2 bugs: Having problems with MobileMe password?

iOS 4.2 bugs: Having problems with MobileMe password?

Having problems with your MobileMe password lately? We’re hearing from users (and our own Rene!) that MobileMe both on the web at me.com and on iPhone, iPod touch and iPad complains your password is wrong when it’s the same password you’ve always used. We’ll take a look at the symptoms and possible solutions after the break!

So MobileMe suddenly starts rejecting your password and you’re sure you’re typing it in correctly? Here are some things to try:

On me.com, simply entering the password a second time seems to work for some while on the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, even though there’s a warning, email, calendars, etc. seem to keep syncing without a problem. In other words it is annoying but you can muscle through.

For others, me.com stops working entirely but switching back to the old mac.com version (user@mac.com instead of user@me.com) works fine. Then when Apple fixes it on their end you can switch back.

While this is not technically an iOS 4.2 bug it did seem to start happening right around the time Apple released iOS 4.2. Perhaps the transition from pure me.com service to also supporting Apple ID’s for the now free Find my iPhone feature caused some server side hiccups?

Meanwhile you can also always try the old stand by of deleting the account from your device and then adding it back again. It’s a pain but maybe less so than the repeated error popups.

If you’re experiencing the MobileMe password bug and if these fixes or any others helped you out, let us know in the comments!

Warning to unlockers: Apple implemented baseband signature check in iOS 4.2.1!

Warning to Unlockers: Apple implements baseband signature check in iOS 4.2.1!

Apple has once again raised the stakes in their continuing cat and mouse game with unlockers by implementing a boot level signature check in iOS 4.2.1 that will cause the device to fail to boot if the baseband firmware is not correct. This is clearly a reaction to TinyUmbrella’s ability to block baseband upgrades on the iPhone 4.

If you try and implement TinyUmbrella when installing 4.2.1 you will be thrown into recovery mode without the ability to kick yourself out of it unless you install the new baseband or downgrade back to iOS 4.1 (if you’ve saved your SHSH blobs).

If you plan on unlocking your iPhone it is recommended that you hold off on installing 4.2.1 as there is no current method available to maintain an unlockable baseband. Once the unlocking tools or custom firmware utilities have been updated and released it will be safe to upgrade.

Let us know what you think by leaving a comment below or visiting our awesome jailbreak forums!

Apple poaching enterprise sales staff from BlackBerry maker RIM

Posted: 24 Nov 2010 05:30 AM PST

Blackberry next to an iPhone 4

The Wallstreet Journal is reporting that Apple has been poaching sales staff from RIM in order to better compete in the enterprise sector with the iPhone. Some of these converts have been high-ranking members of RIM’s staff.

In the past 18 months, at least five members of RIM’s enterprise-sales team have left the company to join Apple. This includes Geoff Perfect, who served as Head of Strategic Sales at RIM for nearly five years before leaving in April 2009 and joining Apple a month later as Head of Enterprise iPhone Sales, according to LinkedIn, the online networking service for professionals.

In addition, Joe Bartlett, Steve Marshall and Peter Decker from RIM all transferred over to Apple earlier this year.

Although Apple has been making recent headway with respect to the enterprise sector, they’re clearly on a mission to step things up even more. But will taking staff from competition be enough?
