Untethered 4.2.1 Jailbreak Requires Saved 4.1 SHSH Blobs! Posted: 22 Nov 2010 03:32 PM PST Dev Team has announced that Greenpois0n will be updated within the next few days to allow for 4.2.1 to be Jailbroken. As of right now, the Jailbreak will be tethered for all 4th gen based devices (iPhone3GS w/ new bootrom, iPhone4, iPad, iPodTouch3&4) but Comex is hard at work creating a userland exploit to untether 4.2.1. Word is that this untethering will require 4.1 SHSH Blobs. If you have not saved your blobs yet, even if you are not currently Jailbroken and/or not currently using iOS 4.1, you can go ahead and use TinyUmbrella to save them. However, since 4.2.1 was just released, Apple will stop signing 4.1 SHSH blobs very soon (any minute really) and once that happens, you are out of luck! Next are the owners of all the more recent devices. The good news there is that due to geohot's limera1n exploit, all recent devices can be jailbroken (this will be true until Apple released new hardware that fixes geohot's limerain exploit in the bootrom). The bad news is that right now, the 4.2.1 jailbreak is *tethered* on all of these recent devices. A tethered jailbreak means that each time your device loses battery power or needs to be rebooted, you must attach it to a PC or Mac to boot into the jailbroken state. @comex is working hard on a method that may untether the 4.2.1 jailbreak, but it will require you to have your 4.1 SHSH blobs in order to use it. No word on how much more effort it will take though (please don't bug @comex about it!). (We also have an alternative method that may work, but @comex's method is much more elegant.) Also, if you plan on unlocking your iPhone or use unlock currently, please hold off updating to 4.2.1 until those tools are updated! iWork Pages, Keynote, and Numbers for iPad updated, now include AirPrint Posted: 22 Nov 2010 01:54 PM PST The three apps in Apple’s iWork for iPad collection, Pages, Keynote, and Numbers, received updates today. Common to all three is the following:
In addition, Pages has automatic pagination of tables that cross a page break. Numbers received print preview to adjust how a sheet prints across multiple pages, including Auto Fit, and PDF export takes advantage of pagination settings from print preview. Lastly, Keynote has an enhanced presenter display that shows the current slide, the next slide, or your notes when connected to an external display, and the ability to import existing and add new presenter notes to slides. These are significant updates to the trio, particularly AirPrint wireless printing and support for iOS 4.2 multitasking. If you get a chance to try them out, let us know what you think! iWork Pages, Keynote, and Numbers for iPad updated, now include AirPrint is a story by TiPb. Jailbreaking iOS 4.2.1 – what you need to know Posted: 22 Nov 2010 11:11 AM PST With iOS 4.2.1 being released to the masses today, here’s a couple tips for jailbreakers. If you’re on iOS 4.1 and jailbroken, by this point you should know how to save your SHSH blobs via TinyUmbrella or Cydia. As of right now, most jailbreak methods that work on iOS 4.2.1 are pretty hairy. I highly suggest waiting to upgrade for the official tools, but if you feel the need to give it a try right now, I’ve put up an iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak guide in our forums. Ask questions, give answers, and help eachother out. You can always visit our general jailbreak forum and post other questions and find answers about other topics as well. Whatever you decide to do, let us know how it works for you! Update: The Dev-Team has updated their blog giving everyone a bit more information about iOS 4.2.1 and how it’ll affect all devices. Make sure you read it and heed their warnings when updating. It’s looking like older devices will have an easy upgrade route to a jailbreakable 4.2.1. Newer devices are (as of now) tethered. I urge anyone who wants to upgrade to weigh their options before deciding to upgrade. You may lose your jailbreak or be tethered. A tethered jailbreak basically means if your phone battery dies or you need to reboot, you’ll need to be connected to a computer to enter into a jailbreak state again. They’re somewhat of a pain and I’d suggest waiting for an untethered jailbreak. You probably won’t be waiting long. Until then, make sure you have your 4.1 SHSH blobs saved via Cydia or TinyUmbrella! Tip: How to use AirPlay on iPhone home movies Posted: 22 Nov 2010 11:10 AM PST Curious how to use the new iOS 4.2 AirPlay feature to play the movies you shot on your iPhone on the bigger Apple TV screen? Unfortunately, Apple didn’t bake in a nice easy AirPlay button in the Photo app like they did everywhere else. Don’t panic however, you can still do it. It’s just a little more complicated but we’ll show you how, after the break.
First, go tap on your Photo app, go into the Camera Roll, and find the home video you want to play. Then:
It’ll take a moment or two to make the change but then your video should start playing on your Apple TV. To switch it back to playing on your iPhone, just repeat the steps above and select iPhone as your source instead. If you try it out, let us know how it works for you, and if you have any questions, ask in the comments! Tips of the day will range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary. If you already know this tip, keep the link handy as a quick way to help a friend. If you have a tip of your own you’d like to suggest, add them to the comments or send them in to news@tipb.com. (If it’s especially awesome and previously unknown to us, we’ll even give ya a reward…) Tip: How to use AirPlay on iPhone home movies is a story by TiPb. Waiting to update to iOS 4.2? Here’s what you need to know! Posted: 22 Nov 2010 08:40 AM PST The final release version of iOS 4.2 (iOS 4.2.1) for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad will become available for download sometime today and we’ll post it up right on the front page the minute it’s ready. Before you race to download, however, there are a few steps you want to go through to get ready and to make sure you have the smoothest upgrade possible. We’ll go over them after the break!
Check your device compatibilityiPhone 4, iPod touch 4, and iPad get the full update. iPhone 3GS and the 2009 Pod touch G3 (64GB and 32GB) get everything their hardware supports (not a big deal this time). iPhone 3G and iPod touch G2 (which includes the 2009 iPod touch 8GB) get even more performance fixes, which is good considering how badly they performed under iOS 4.0! The 2007 original iPhone 2G and iPod touch aren’t compatible with iOS 4.2. Here’s what Apple said:
Make sure you’re running iTunes 10.1You need iTunes 10.1 in order to use all the new features like AirPlay. Apple released it on November 12 so if you haven’t gotten it already, hit Software Update and download the latest, or get it directly from Apple. [iTunes 10.1]. (Developers, remember you have the option of updating via Xcode instead of iTunes). If you’ve Jailbroken, re-virginizeMany people who Jailbreak their iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad likely won’t rush to update but will wait for an iOS 4.2 Jailbreak first. If for some reason you do want to update regardless of Jailbreak, consider restoring to 4.1 pure first. You may not have a problem, but we’ve heard from enough readers enough times that we recommend including this step. (No laughing Ally and Farbod!) Again, updating to iOS 4.2 will mean no Jailbreak, no unlock for now. If that’s a deal breaker for you, don’t update. Just wait. If you need extra help with this step, we’ve got a Jailbreak Forum just for you. Backup your dataOnce you have iTunes 10.1 installed, plug in your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad and sync it. You want your data backed up, anything you’ve purchased or updated on-device transferred safely to your Windows/Mac library, and the position of any media you’re currently enjoying recorded so you can keep going from the same place once your iOS 4.2 update is done. Remember, if you haven’t synced in a while it could take a few minutes to backup. Don’t be impatient, let it run. Once that’s done, launch iPhoto on your Mac or your favorite image capture program on Windows and copy over any photos you’ve taken on the iPhone. Even the remote chance you may lose your Camera Roll, especially if it has a lot of special moments recorded, is something to be avoided at all costs. Get up to speed on iOS 4.2Once everything is done and ready, and if you’re still waiting for Apple to release the update, why not check out our complete iOS 4.2 for iPhone and iPod touch walkthrough and complete iOS 4.2 for iPad walkthrough so once you’ve downloaded and installed it you can spend your time enjoying the new functionality, not trying to discover it.
