Apple creates trailer video for iAds, you buying?

Posted: 19 Nov 2010 01:46 PM PST

Interested in how Apple is advertising iAds to advertisers? Well they’ve got a brand new highlight video up on Apple.com that’ll give you a good idea. The emotion of TV. The interactivity of digital. The power of Mobility. Indeed.

We only have two questions. Was it made with iMovie 11’s trailer feature, and is it enough to get Mad Men-types to buy buys in hopes of attracting buyers?

Beginner Tip: How to Share a Contact (VCF) on Your iPhone

Posted: 19 Nov 2010 09:43 AM PST

Want to find out how to easily share someone’s contact information on your iPhone? Simply go into your address book on your iPhone, tap on the contact you’d like to share and you’ll see an option at the bottom to share the contact. When you tap that, you’ll be presented with an option to either MMS or e-mail the person’s information. Choose your option and the respective app will launch by itself. Read on for a few more screenshots and a little bit more explanation.

If you’re sending via MMS, you have to choose who you’re sending it to and click send.

Sending by e-mail isn’t much different, just type in the person’s email address you’d like to send the contact card to (or choose them from your address book) and you’re contact will be sent on it’s way!

Also keep in mind this isn’t just an iPhone to iPhone feature. Most smartphones and even some feature phones will support .vcf (contact) files. Sending a contact to a person with a Blackberry or Android device should work just as well. Next time you need to send someone’s contact information, give this a try if you haven’t already!

Bonus tip: You can’t MMS on iPad or iPod touch, but the email option is still a great way to share contact info.

Tips of the day will range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary. If you already know this tip, keep the link handy as a quick way to help a friend. If you have a tip of your own you'd like to suggest, add them to the comments or send them in to news@tipb.com. (If it's especially awesome and previously unknown to us, we'll even give ya a reward…)

Apple developing CDMA-GSM World iPad?

Posted: 19 Nov 2010 09:01 AM PST

According to Wedge Partners anaylst Brian Blair, Apple appears to be developing a “world iPad” that would feature Qualcomm’s multimode CDMA-GSM chips.

Recent checks…suggest Apple is going to be ratcheting down production of the existing 3G iPad over the next two months in anticipation of ramping up a new World iPad that is powered by Qualcomm and will run on both GSM and CDMA based networks around the world," Blair writes. "Given our recent checks that suggest Apple is preparing to build approximately 48 million iPads in calendar 2011.

Blair also went on to report that the manufacturing process will be different due to the next generation iPad being possibly thinner and made of one piece of metal.

With a CDMA-GSM iPad possibly gearing up to hit production this could mean that either they want more people to be able to utilize the iPad on 3G all around the globe or that they have plans to make the iPad be able to run on Verizon’s 3G network here in the U.S.. We already have seen Apple and Verizon come together to sell the WiFi only iPad bundled with their MiFi. This type of chip would eliminate the need to utilize a MiFi type device in the future.

We know people are tired of the Verizon rumors and speculations but would you like to utilize the iPad on their network here in the U.S.? If you are not in the U.S. is there a CDMA carrier you would like to be able to utilize for 3G use with your iPad? Let us know your thoughts below.

iOS 5 wants: Files.app

Posted: 19 Nov 2010 08:08 AM PST

iPhone iPad files app

While I’m sitting here still waiting for iOS 4.2 to be released, I’m continuing to think about iOS 5 and how I’d like and iPhone and iPad Files app, similar to the existing Photos app but serving as a repository for documents and other non-image files. It’s something I asked for back before iOS 4 was released and is something I want even more now. I don’t need or particularly want full access to the iOS file system (and there’s a Jailbreak for that if I do) but Iwould like an official and officially supported place where my files are surfaced and a common way to get to them from within any app.

For example, If I get an email with a document attached I should be able to tap and hold, get a popup, and Save to Files the same way I can save pictures to Photos today. Everything from Apple’s iWork suite to Documents to Go or QuickOffice, to GoodReader or Readdle Docs and all the others should be able to bring up a file picker as easily as they bring up an image picker today, and I should be able to open and save back as easily as I do photos in any of the numerous image editors today.

Apple already provides something vaguely similar to this… for iDisk files. They released it back in July, 2009. Now the cloud is nice, the cloud is fine, and the cloud may well be the future of file storage, but until that future arrives there needs to be good local access as well. And there needs to be a seamless way to round-trip the files between apps. (Which certainly isn’t the case even with iDisk and especially not with Apple’s own iWork suite.)

(The ability to move Files — and Photos — into and between folders would great as well).

With Retina Display it’s easier than ever to work on iPhone and iPod touch documents, and with the advent of iPad and its big screen, it’s realistic to do far more file work on the go.

A useable Files.app would make that a reality.

UPDATE: To expand a little based on the comments below, being able to access what’s stored in Files.app (and Photos.app) for that matter not just via any app but via Safari as well would be huge. It would eliminate one of the reasons it’s so inconvenient not having a Facebook for iPad app by way of just one example.

A cloud connection to both Files.app and Photos.app is also the way to go, so it’s easier to move and sync (i.e. backup) files and photos outside just the local device. That’s why iDisk (and apps like Box.net and DropBox) only solve half the problem, and MobileMe only syncs part of the data I want synced.

Keep the ideas coming!

Apple and iPhone: top manufacturer and device in October

Posted: 19 Nov 2010 05:04 AM PST

Millenial Media’s October Mobile Mix is out and for the first time they’ve expanded their report from strictly smartphones like iPhone to all connected devices, including iPod touch and iPad. With that in mind, Apple’s iPhone remains the top mobile device at 15.96%, and the new mix sees Apple at the top mobile device manufacturer list with 24.96%. Some additional highlights:

  • Apple, the leading device manufacturer on their network for the last thirteen months and accounted for a 25% share of impressions on their network in October.
  • iPad requests increased 112% month-over-month
  • Connected Devices, Apple iPod touch, Apple iPad and the Sony PSP made up 3 of the Top 30 Mobile Devices on our network.
  • Smartphone impression share increased 7% month-over-month and represented 61% of the Smartphone, Feature Phone & Connected Device Impression share in October.
  • Non-U.S. impressions on the Millennial Media network have grown 20% faster than U.S. impressions since January.
  • Games, Social Networking and Mail & Messaging were the Top Three Global Mobile Application Categories in October.
  • This month, for the first time, Android tied with iOS as the largest Smartphone OS on our network, with an 8% increase month-over-month and 37% impression share on our network.

The morbidly curious part of us is wondering what those numbers may look like one day in a post Verizon iPhone world…

iPad 2 component manufacturers revealed?

Posted: 19 Nov 2010 04:51 AM PST

According to a report by Digitimes, three manufacturers have been appointed to provide components for the next generation iPad 2. Ibiden, Tripod Technology and TTM Technologies will manufacture and supply PCB boards for the new iPad. Additional suppliers will be added to the list in February 2011, when production of iPad 2 increases.

The sources said Ibiden, Tripod and TTM have received certification from Apple, and will start shipping any-layer HDI boards for iPad 2 in small quantities in December.

If Apple keeps to its yearly product update cycles, as is usual, then we can expect to see a new iPad announced in early 2011 and shipping by April.

The question remains however, what do we want from the next generation iPad? Obviously front and rear facing video cameras for FaceTime calls, more RAM and hopefully a Retina display, but what else?
