Sneak peek: New-style Facebook messages on iPhone

Posted: 17 Nov 2010 02:35 PM PST

Facebook’s new-style messages service — an abstraction of email, IM, and SMS — is already working in the latest version of Facebook for iPhone… once you’ve had the feature rolled out to your account. Facebook isn’t the first to try and redefine the ways we communicate online. Google has done it twice already, once successfully with the eccentric but reserved Gmail and again unsuccessfully with the wikichat that was Wave. Facebook is a social network however — the social network — so their take is decidedly different and whether or not it catches on remains to be seen.

Setup is simple on the web. You get an invitation, you accept, then you get your @facebook email address, verify your SMS number (if you want), and login to chat (also if you want). After that you’re hit with the new interface. Once that’s setup, the next time you launch Facebook on iPhone you’re alerted that new-style messages are available (same way Places alerted you when it arrived) and you’re good to go.

We’ll be testing it out over the next week or so but in the meantime check out the screenshots after the break and if you have any questions or comments, you know where to leave them!

Google Docs can now be edited with iPhone or iPad

Posted: 17 Nov 2010 11:53 AM PST

Google has added some much awaited functionality to Google Docs today — you can now edit your docs on-the-go with iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad!

The feature will be rolling out over the next few days and means that:

  • You can work on that important memo…while on the bus or train to work.
  • If you're behind on a group proposal, but really want to make it to the ball game tonight, your whole team can work on it from the bleacher seats.
  • You can take minute-by-minute notes at a concert so you'll always remember the setlist. And your friends can jealously follow in real-time at home.
  • …and the list goes on!

If you utilize Google Docs all you have to do is visit docs.google.com in Safari on your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad and select the document you would like to edit. Once the document is open simply select the edit button and you will be switched over to their mobile editor.

Let us know if you are excited for the seemingly much anticipated feature and if you use it how it worked out for you!

Check out a video of Google Docs editing on-the-go in a video after the break!

17 year old geek makes $130,000 selling White iPhone 4 conversion kits

White iPhone Conversion Parts

A 17-year-old geek turned entrepreneur pocketed $130,000 in the past 6 months by selling white iPhone 4 conversion kits online, prompting a private investigator and possible legal woes. From The New York Observer:

The unbelievable demand among Apple enthusiasts for the long-delayed white version of the iPhone 4 has been compared to the hunt for that legendary white whale, Moby Dick. So when Fei Lam, a high school senior and gadget nerd, got a tip about buying up some white iPhone 4 parts, he saw the opportunity to finally make his passion for electronics pay off.

Fei Lam was able to order parts for the elusive white iPhone 4 from a contact in China who was closely connected to Foxconn (one of Apple’s manufacturers of the iPhone 4), and from that he was able to put together his own kit.

Lam’s success was driven by top media sites like TechCrunch and CNN reporting on what he was up to, and he believes a recent inquiry by a private investigator may have been prompted by all the attention from news media. Lam has since retained an attorney, and is planning on defending his new business which will help put him through college.

Since the latest rumors are that Apple is never going to ship a white iPhone 4, we’re curious if any of our readers would be interested in Lam’s conversion kit. Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Mark Zuckerberg talks Apple, Facebook integration during Web 2.0 Summit

Posted: 17 Nov 2010 09:51 AM PST

On the second day of the Web 2.0 Summit, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg made some comments on his company’s dealings with Apple over Ping.

Zuckerberg also had an explanation for why the company had not partnered with Apple to let it pull in social data for Ping. He says that Facebook has had to invest tens of millions of dollars into infrastructure to enable games from large developers like Zynga, which is why Facebook and Zynga agreed to a formal alliance. Zuckerberg says that if the company is going to make an investment like this, "we want to have an understanding that you won't just import our data — and that you try to contribute back. We're working through that."

Now that we somewhat understand the basics for why Facebook is still blocking ping maybe they and Apple can come to terms and work out some sort of deal to incorporate Facebook into Ping to help make it more useable.

Recently Twitter allowed Apple to intergrate their services into Ping so it would be extremely useful and welcome for Facebook to follow suit but we will have to continue to wait through the Apple and Facebook negotiations.

Do you think Ping needs Facebook to thrive as a social network or do you think Twitter is enough for users to be more interested in utilizing the Ping services?

Reeder for iPad updated, adds Facebook support

Posted: 17 Nov 2010 08:37 AM PST

Reeder for iPad, which syncs with your Google Reader account and pulls in all your RSS feeds in the blink of an eye, had been updated to version 1.2 and now has added support for posting to Facebook and Zootool. Once iOS 4.2 drops (soon please) Reeder will work in the background using the task completion process, allowing you to leave the app and do other things while the sync occurs in the background.

There are also the usual bug fixes and a few other minor updates such as less sensitive slider controls, larger tap areas and better handling of accounts with hundreds of subscriptions. If you use Google Reader and have an iPad, you must give it a try. The app is clearly laid out with simple menus and has an easy to read layout. The only downside is the app icon, it is a rather dull grey and white affair and does look a bit out of place in my dock.

Incipio Kickstand for iPad – accessory review

Posted: 17 Nov 2010 08:06 AM PST

If you’re looking for a durable standing case for your iPad, the Incipio Kickstand case may be for you. It is made of rip-stop nylon on the outside and lined with microsuede on the inside.

The Incipio Kickstand is designed with different panels so that they can fold into a triangle, converting the case to stand. Since the inside is made out of microsuede, it has plenty of friction to keep the iPad standing without special notches, hooks, or flaps to keep it in place. Unfortunately, there is only one angle you have the iPad stand at. This fixed angle keeps the iPad standing tall, perfect for setting on a desk and watching movies. If using the iPad on your lap, you will not want to have it set up as kickstand because the angle is too awkward.

Not only is the microsuede great for providing necessary friction, but it’s also very soft and at no risk of scratching your precious iPad. Also, the inside of the middle panel has a pocket that is great for holding items such as envelopes, notes, and business cards. Lastly, the Incipio Kickstand has a magnetic closure which allows it to be free of flaps or fancy closures.

The Incipio Kickstand for iPad is available in the TiPb iPad accessory store in three colors: black, light gray, and khaki/tan. If you’re looking for a nice standing case that also offers some good protection, I recommending checking this one out.

Pros

  • Durable outside with soft inside
  • Magnetic closure
  • Pocket
  • Access to all ports and buttons

Cons

  • Angle is too steep to use on lap

Tip: How to make your iPhone battery life last longer

Posted: 17 Nov 2010 06:29 AM PST

Need to find out how to make your iPhone’s battery life last longer? There are quite a few ways in which you can help your iPhone save power. Some are very intuitive but hopefully we will tell you a few which you have not yet thought of.

Special thanks to michaelchang516 from the forums for this tip!

The basic idea is this: anything running on your iPhone uses up the battery, so we’re going to go into the Settings app and turn some things down, and turn others off altogether. The more you turn off, the longer your batter will last — but of course the less you’ll be able to do. It’s a balancing act but one that can help you squeeze out a little extra juice when you really need it.

  • Set Auto-Lock to 1 minute
  • Turn off any extra sounds, like keyboard clicks
  • Turn off the iPod EQ
  • Use headphones instead of the speaker if you have to listen to audio or music
  • Turn down the screen brightness
  • Turn off Bluetooth when not using it
  • Turn off Wi-Fi when not using it
  • Turn off 3G when not using it
  • Turn off Location Services when not using them
  • Turn off Push Notifications
  • Set all email, calendar, and contacts accounts to “Fetch” (turn off Push)
  • Double-click the Home Button to activate the multitasking dock, hold your finger on an app to enter “jiggly” mode, and kill any apps that might be running in the background, especially VoIP (like Skype), streaming audio (like Pandora), or navigation (like TomTom).

Bonus tip: If you’re really desperate, put your iPhone in Airplane Mode and save the radios for when you need them. If you’re really desperate, you can also turn your iPhone completely off until you need it (it will still use a tiny amount of power but far, far less than anything else).

So how did these tips work out for you? Give us your feedback, and any other tips for saving iPhone battery life you might have, in the comments!

Tips of the day will range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary. If you already know this tip, keep the link handy as a quick way to help a friend. If you have a tip of your own you'd like to suggest, add them to the comments or send them in to dailytips@tipb.com. (If it's especially awesome and previously unknown to us, we'll even give ya a reward…)
