Twitter for iPhone, iPad updated — now with push notifications! Posted: 16 Nov 2010 03:36 PM PST Twitter for iPhone and iPad just got an update and the big news is — push notifications. This has been a highly desired feature for a very long time. At the moment, push notifications for the official Twitter app are only available for @mentions and direct messages. Interestingly, Twitter does not include push notifications in the release notes. So it was a pleasant surprise to see Twitter asking for permission to send push notifications when launching for the first time after the install. Was this intentional? I know there are some users who have refused to use the official Twitter app because it did not offer push notifications. If you’re one of those users, is this enough to make the switch? Who’s excited for this feature? Do you plan to enable push notifications from Twitter or will you stick with a third party solution such as Boxcar? UPDATE: Twitter has updated the change log to include push notifications for @mentions and messages. [Twitter] Twitter for iPhone, iPad updated — now with push notifications! is a story by TiPb. Verizon Twitter account hints at Verizon iPhone? Posted: 16 Nov 2010 01:10 PM PST Seems like someone over at Verizon may have slipped up. It appears a Twitter user asked if Verizon getting the iPad could possibly be hinting at the release of a Verizon iPhone. Shockingly enough, whoever is behind the @VerizonCareers Twitter account actually responded back and said this -
This could just be a Verizon account acknowledging how widespread the rumor is, or playing a cruel joke on Twitter and Verizon iPhone supporters, or it could be an employee that isn’t aware of the fact that putting internal information on Twitter is typically frowned upon. The tweet is still up and has not been deleted as of writing this. Verizon getting the iPad is definitely a step in the right direction when it comes to Verizon earning the iPhone, but is this a bit of a stretch? What do you guys think? [ @verizoncareers. Thanks @slinky317 for sending this in! ] Verizon Twitter account hints at Verizon iPhone? is a story by TiPb. This feed is sponsored by The iPhone Blog Store. |
Official Google Voice for iPhone hits iTunes App Store Posted: 16 Nov 2010 11:20 AM PST Google’s official Google Voice app for iPhone has just hit the iTunes App Store.
Wow, who thought we’d ever get to type those words? While the last bullet point is a bit of a bummer, there’s no denying this ends one of the darker chapters of iOS and App Store history — which included an FCC investigation and revealed the first cracks in what had previously been an Apple/Google love-fest. If you’re trying it out let us know how you like it and how it compares to GV Mobile and other 3rd party offerings. Now where’s the official Gmail app? 2010 TiPb Award for Favorite New iPhone/iPad Feature of the Year goes to…! Posted: 16 Nov 2010 11:11 AM PST Your votes have been counted, your voices have been heard, and we’re proud to announce the 2010 TiPb Readers Choice Award for Favorite New iPhone/iPad Feature of the Year goes to… Multitasking! Narrowly beating out Retina Display, Multitasking has been one of the most requested iOS features since the original iOS device, iPhone 2G, was released in 2007. Well it took 3 years and 4 versions — even longer than copy and paste — but iOS 4 finally brought background tasks to iPhone and iPod touch, and iOS 4.2 is poised to do the same for iPad. Sure, some may quibble that the mix of fast app switching, saved state, background audio, location, and VoIP threads, local and push notifications, etc. (see the full walkthrough for details) aren’t “true” multitasking but functionally it achieves what 90% of users need, with minimal impact on battery and management overhead. Which is pretty much what Apple said when they introduced it at the iOS 4 preview back in March:
There’s always a discussion as to whether Apple should do things sooner or do them better. For both copy and paste and multitasking Apple claims it took them a while but their solution is indeed better. The jury is still out on that but one verdict is clear — iOS multitasking is your favorite new feature of 2010. 2010 TiPb Award for Favorite New iPhone/iPad Feature of the Year goes to…! is a story by TiPb. RIM puts PlayBook vs. iPad in browser test video Posted: 16 Nov 2010 10:16 AM PST Today RIM posted a video of their PlayBook vs. Apple’s iPad to demonstrate the browsing ability and speeds the PlayBook has to offer. The results are interesting but seemingly skewed as well. There were three different tests RIM used to compare the browers on the two devices. They went head-to-head in raw web-site rendering, Acid3, and Java. To start out they are both directed towards UEFA.com and then CBS.com. The PlayBook clearly finishing loading and rendering both web-sites faster than the iPad. The CBS site however has flash content on it and obviously will not fully load on the iPad. On the Acid3 test both devices managed to score 100/100 but RIM boasts that the iPad has an HTML error during this test. The funny thing about these tests are that the iPad is over 6 months old compared to the PlayBook not even being out yet for sale. Also an interesting note is the fact the PlayBook is running on QNX which is Adobe Flash and AIR programs so naturally it will run flash sites as compared to the iPad not having flash capabilities. It will be far more interesting to see the 2nd generation iPad pitted versus the PlayBook as the two devices will be on a much more level playing field. Do you think this test has any validity given the fact the iPad is real and the PlayBook is still technically vaporware or do you think this is Apple’s chance to step up their game and blow the PlayBook out of the water? Check out the video after the break! [ CrackBerry ]
