Attention: Don’t trust iPhone alarm clock during Daylight Savings Time changeover

Posted: 06 Nov 2010 04:26 PM PDT

The switch from Daylight Saving Time to Standard Time happens tonight at 2 am. But as we learned from Australian and and European iPhone users, the iPhone’s alarm clock will not recognize this change. In fact, your alarm is likely to go off an hour late.

This is a very strange bug. Australian users were reporting that their alarms were going off early after the time change, and European iPhones were going of late. Even stranger is that we received reports of people in the US already being affected by the bug – their alarms are going off early.

The key thing to note about this bug is that it does not affect one-time alarms. So if you have a recurring alarm that wakes you up for work each morning, change the repeat interval to “never”. It’s very frustrating to need to set the alarm every day, but it’s the only option until Apple releases a software fix.

The good news is, it is fixed in iOS 4.2 which might be coming as early as next week. The bad news is that’s a week too late to help with this bug. I don’t know about you, but I’m really disappointed in Apple for not releasing a quick fix for this bug. They knew about it, so they should’ve fixed it before the time change.

iPhone and iPad gifts for travelers – TiPb holiday gift guide

Posted: 06 Nov 2010 02:45 PM PDT

‘Tis the season to be gifting and with iPhone and iPad being pretty much the perfect travel companions, there will be lots of vacationers to shop for this year. That means not only devices like iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad all wrapped up and ready to go, but all the great apps and accessories that go with them. Do you know someone special who’ll be traveling over the holidays? If so, here’s TiPb helpful holiday gift guide!

Don’t need anything for a traveler? Check out the recommendations anyway, something great might still catch your eye. If not, no worries, we’ll have plenty more holiday gifts guides coming your way this month!

Sun and fun

iPhones and iPads are great… dropping them in the sand or surf really, truly isn’t. That’s why we never go near the beach or poolside without a waterproof case. Both the Overboard and the Aquapac have a lot to recommend them. Aquapac’s design makes it a little easier to see through but Overboard has just turned it up a notch with a new model complete with waterproof headphones. Hot tub. Ready. If we’re not so much swimming as hiking, we want something a little more secure and for that we like the Golla Bag. Tons of styles, tons more functionality.

Nothing harshens our vacation mellow more than overcast skies and rainy days, so we use Weather Channel Max or AccuWeather.com to keep as up-to-date and informed as possible about the climate. Both are US-centric, however, so if you’re traveling outside the states, the quality and quantity of information declines. If there’s a golf course nearby, V1 Golf or Golfplan with Paul Azinger can help tune our swings either before travel or between hitting the links. Need a few good books to get us through a hard day’s lounging? We like iTunes or Amazon gift certificates so we can download iTunes movies, TV shows, and iBooks or Amazon Kindle books. iBooks is frankly the better reading experience but Kindle has a much bigger library and works on a wide range of devices, so it comes down style vs. quantity and compatibility.

Home for the holidays

When we’re heading home for the holidays, and that means snow and pine trees, we keep the same waterproof cases we mentioned above handy in case our iPhone or iPad takes a tumble in the snow. And since we don’t want our fingers frozen, we also pack a Pogo Sketch stylus. Yeah, Steve Jobs hates them but he lives in California, not the frigid north. We also love our SCOTTeVEST cold weather gear since it looks great and has room for tons (and we mean tons of iOS and electronic gear. Lastly we pack a stereo BT headset with some serious base. It’s great for the slopes… and for drowning out in-laws and other assorted family members (don’t judge us!)

When we’re on the slopes, iTrail Map 3D is a great way to keep track of what we’ve done — as long as we have a good GPS signal in the mountains. Speaking of GPS, both Apple’s Find my iPhone (part of MobileMe) and iHound are lifesavers if you lose your iPhone or iPad while traveling. Just go to the nearest other iOS device, or any internet-enabled computer, log in, and track it down. MobileMe offers a lot of other features, like Mail, iDisk, etc. but has a much higher annual subscription price to go with it. And when we need to entertain the little ones, we pull out How the Grinch Stole Christmas, or one of the other Dr. Seuss or Disney books.

On the Town

When we’re spending the holidays in the big city, the first thing we make sure of is that we have a lot of power to get us through the day. The Griffin TuneJuice 2 will take care your iPhone or iPod touch, and any other iPod you might have. If bling is more your thing, than the Case-Mate Barely There Chrome Case will match any lights the big city can throw at it. And to keep walking and talking, we’re currently hooked on the Jawbone Prime Bluetooth headset. For serious noise, like clubs and pubs, we turn to the HP HX1 Endeavor.

When we want to get our munch on, high-end style, ZAGAT TO GO is our go-to. If we need to know about more than just food, there almost always a Lonely Planet Guide for that.

Your picks?

iPad 2 ads shot in New York last month?

Posted: 06 Nov 2010 11:00 AM PDT

9to5mac have reported that Apple were filming ads for the next generation iPad as early as last month. The ads were reportedly shot at New York’s Pier 59 by David Sims, a British photographer.

Current generation iPads were used at the shooting of the ads and will be swapped out for the new model in post production. (So no FaceTime then?) A participant at the shooting, said that there were no new products on scene, and that everyone had to sign non-disclosure agreements.

At this point, about the only thing we can confirm is that the new iPad 2’s will probably be the same size as the current generation iPads.

We’re expecting to see Apple announce the next-gen iPads in early 2011, so we’ll have to wait till then to see these ads.

Quake 3 Arena for iPad [Jailbreak]

Posted: 06 Nov 2010 08:58 AM PDT

Quake 3 Arena for iPad

Quake 3 Arena is coming to the iPad by way of Cydia, with integrated touchscreen controls and reportedly far more stable gameplay than the current version for iOS devices. The port comes courtesy of Alexander Pick, forum member at Paduser.com, who has been refining this unique verson so that it’s a perfect fit for the iPad. Here are some of the additional features included in the game:

  • Onscreen controls with virtual joystick
  • iTunes Filesharing enabled
  • 1024×768 resolution running at 50-60 FPS
  • Play in online or offline mode
  • Runs just fine on iOS 4.2 for iPad
  • Being a huge fan of Quake 3 Arena (even still to this day), I’m really excited for this release. We’d suggest hitting up the link below in order to grab the high-res texture pack for the best fragging experience. You can also view a quick demo of the test version running on an iPad (Facebook link).

So will you be practicing your headshot skills on the iPad after this hits Cydia? Let us know in the comments!

MobileMe makes Mac setup easy, why can’t it do the same for iPhone, iPad?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2010 06:39 AM PDT

MobileMe makes Mac setup easy, why can't it do the same for iPhone, iPad?

MobileMe makes it incredibly easy to setup a new Mac, why can’t Apple do the same for iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad? This week I picked up an 11-inch MacBook Air so TiPb could see how it compared (and competed) with the iPad, and literally as soon as it boots up, you’re asked for a MobileMe or Apple ID. Once booted, you can go into System Preferences and turn on MobileMe sync. Then, unlike iOS where all you get is Mail, Contacts, and Calendars, you can start syncing down all your preferences, keychains (passwords), dock and dashboard setups, and iDisk files straight from the Apple Cloud.

Imagine the same happened on iPhone or iPad. Get a new device, enter your MobileMe login, and all your Settings, passwords, Home Screen and Folder layouts (including installed apps at the time of last sync!), and iDisk files just worked. You would only have to restore from iTunes if you chose to, and you could do a clean install without half the hassle it takes now.

Re-installing apps is still a pain on Mac, even though sync means you usually don’t have to go looking for licenses any more (which is an incredible pain). With a Mac App Store, Apple could easily do the same kind of app sync on the desktop as well.

There would still be a few hurdles, however.

The first is universal login. I currently have my MobileMe ID, my iTunes ID, my Apple Store ID, my Apple Discussions ID, my Game Center ID, etc. There are hints in iOS 4.2 that Apple is taking steps towards unifying at least Apple ID and MobileMe ID. True unification and single login would be fantastic. Android already does this via Gmail, so does webOS via Palm ID. If I’m prompted for my MobileMe/Apple ID when booting a new Mac, why not when booting a new iOS device?

The second is the pay wall. That excludes a lot of users. Given how successful Google has been with their free-as-in-ad-supported services, and given Apple now has iAds and a huge data center spinning up, the idea of free — or at least a free tier of — MobileMe services must have been kicked around by Apple. There would still be room for a premium service, either similar to how Google Accounts is a paid version of the free services like Gmail, how DropBox offers extra capacity if you offer cash, or by actually having extra services.

Find my iPhone, which ironically Apple is currently — and confusingly — listing above the Paid Subscription services on me.com for iOS devices, is an example of a premium service people would pay for. And there’s lots of room for others as well.

For now, however, I’d just like to be able to sign into MobileMe on my iPhone or iPad and download my environment the way I can on Mac. Apple, you’ve just given a lot from iOS back to the Mac. How about giving iOS that in return?

Me.com doesn’t list Find my iPhone as paid MobileMe service but App Store still does

    Posted: 06 Nov 2010 06:10 AM PDT

Me.com doesn't list Find my iPhone as paid MobileMe service but App Store still does

If you go to me.com on your iPad or iPhone you’ll a screen with options to Install Find my iPhone and Gallery, and then a second category labeled as “Requires Paid Subscription”, which includes Set up Mail, Contacts, Calendar and Install iDisk.

That’s a little confusing since if you tap the iTunes link, you’re taken to the App Store which promptly informs you Find my iPhone indeed still requires a paid subscription to MobileMe (or the 60-day free trial). Likewise, MobileMe Gallery still requires a member name and password on launch.

So why put Find my iPhone and Gallery above the pay warning? Why put iDisk below it? Poor design, cheap attempt to get people to download and the push the subscription service, or unintentional glimpse of potentially free aspects of MobileMe to come?

Check out the screen and let me know what you think.

    [Thanks Paul for the tip!]

Apple could have had Microsoft’s Kinect controller?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2010 05:40 AM PDT

Cult of Mac says PrimeSense, the company whose technology is behind Microsoft’s new Xbox Kinect, originally tried to sell it to Apple. What went wrong and why didn’t Apple get it? Yup, secrecy and control!

Apple has a history of interface innovation, of course, and had recently introduced the iPhone with its paradigm-shifting multitouch UI. PrimeSense's system went one step further: It was multitouch that you didn't even have to touch. Apple seemed like a natural fit.

Yet the initial meetings hadn't gone so well. Obsessed with secrecy, Apple had already asked [PrimeSense CEO Inon Beracha] to sign a stack of crippling legal agreements and NDAs.

He shook his head. Why didn't he want to do a deal with Apple? No need. The technology was hot. He could sell it to anyone.

I just got an Xbox Kinect and have been testing it out. The setup was a bit long and the only game I’ve tried so far is Kinect Adventure. (Farbod says Kinect Sports is better). We’re standing about 7-feet away and it works well enough for a single player but has issues with 2 players. We lose the second player a lot. I’m going to try lowering the lights and seeing if we can increase the distance.

Contrast this with using the original iPhone’s multitouch, which in my experience and in published tests is still not matched by other phones, and it’s easy to see Apple did a great job and really polished the experience before they released it.

What would an Apple Kinect-style controller have looked like and how would it have performed? We’ll never know now, but we can speculate in the comments! Minority Report iPhone anyone?

(Note: Image above is not really Steve Ballmer using a Kinect, but it’s funny to pretend.)

Apple launches App Store Hall of Fame

    Posted: 05 Nov 2010 07:57 PM PDT

Apple launches App Store Hall of Fame

Apple has launched a new section of the iTunes App Store, a Hall of Fame, containing everything iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad from Angry Birds to Zen Bound 2. There are around 50 apps honored so far (the exact number might vary based on availability in your region) and includes news, travel, sports, entertainment, productivity, and of course, lots of great games.

It’s not a true Hall of Fame in that apps as recent as last month’s Cut the Rope game are included. It would have been nice if it were a more classic version of the concept, including titles like Twitterrific, which existed even before the App Store, and Trism, which was one of the first games to show just how big an indie developer could succeed on the iPhone, and Urban Spoon which made even food selection fun given the iPhone’s then-unique UI paradigms.

Curious to see what Apple considers Hall of Fame material? Check out the link below then tell us what you think!
