Zuckerberg: No Facebook app for iPad because it’s not mobile Posted: 03 Nov 2010 02:29 PM PDT Mark Zuckerberg was asked about a Facebook app for iPad today during Facebook’s mobile event, and his response to Mashable’s Ben Parr was that the iPad isn’t mobile. Parr countered that Apple would disagree with Zuckerberg, to which Zuckerberg said “well, sorry”. Former Android lead and current Facebook mobile head, Eric Tseng then intercepted the question and said they were still working on their strategy for tablets and that, as a new form factor, it required a new approach. Parr extrapolates:
Whether iPad is “mobile” or “portable” is debatable. What’s not debatable is that iPad runs a mobile operating system, iOS, which doesn’t allow websites to access the Photo picker, so you can’t upload pictures or video. You need (forgive me) an app for that. And using the iPhone app on the iPad just isn’t a great user experience. Twitter understands this. Many third party Twitter app developers understand this. Frustrated users certainly understand this. The question is, why doesn’t the 20-year old billionaire genius get it? UPDATED: Skyfire Web Browser now available in the App Store! Posted: 03 Nov 2010 12:05 PM PDT The Skyfire Web Browser app is now live in the App Store a full day ahead of schedule. We’re messing around with the app now, and we like what we’ve seen so far. (We even managed to get last Sunday’s iPad live! Ustream.tv recording to play — check out those Halloween super-suits!) Something we’ve noticed is slight slowness when loading pages, and we suspect this is due to the massive influx of iOS users testing out the new app at once, since everything is routed through Skyfire’s own servers. (They’re transcoding Flash to iOS-friendly H.264 on the fly, then shipping that to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch — so that’s a bit of a workload!) Any readers out there care to give their initial impressions on this flash-converting web browser? UPDATE: Skyfire is either unavailable or becoming unavailable in many countries. Could they be trying to reduce load given initial demand has pretty much melted their transcoding servers? Either way, if you can’t find it in your local App Store, or you could find it previously and now it’s gone, let us know in comments. T-Mobile takes shots at Apple/AT&T in their newest TV ad Posted: 03 Nov 2010 11:48 AM PDT T-Mobile’s latest TV add takes shots at Apple and AT&T alike, exclaiming that they now have “America’s Largest 4G Network“. They also pit their new myTouch 4G against the iPhone 4 in what seems oddly similar to the Mac vs. PC commercials of yesteryear. Whether or not you believe HSPA+ is really 4G, T-Mobile is careful not take direct shots at the iPhone. It mainly focuses on AT&T’s known network limitations (specifically the fact they don’t allow 3G video calling). T-Mobile probably made the right decision there as I’m sure they would love to get their hands on the iPhone to help bolster their sales. Check out the video after the break and let us know your thoughts on T-Mobiles shots at Apple/AT&T. [ Android Central ]

Facebook will also be making the inclusion of photos to a check-in within Places more simple and straight-forward, and introducing Deals for local discounts. Tip: How to ignore or reject a call when your iPhone is locked Posted: 03 Nov 2010 09:22 AM PDT Have you ever wondered how to quickly reject a call when your iPhone is locked? This can be especially important when you are in an meeting and have forgotten to turn off your iPhone beforehand. Yes, this is a basic how to, but for those who do not already know, it can prove invaluable.
When you receive a call on your locked iPhone, "slide to unlock" will change to "slide to answer", with no "reject" or “ignore” option in sight, but you can still do it:

Evil Dead iPhone app coming soon to app store Posted: 03 Nov 2010 09:11 AM PDT Sam Raimi’s horror cult classic, Evil Dead, is coming to the iPhone. For those of you unfamiliar with the series, Evil Dead is the first of three films starring Bruce Campbell and revolves around a group of college kids who visit an abandoned cabin in the woods only to unleash pure evil. Currently there is not much in the way of details about the game except for the fact the characters look like Wii bobble-head avatars. A trailer has been released and if the game turns out anything like the trailer, expect to have a very polished iOS game. As a nice touch, the developer pretty much matched the game trailer with Evil Dead’s original trailer and is very well done. View both trailers after the break!

How to setup LockInfo for iPhone [Jailbreak] Posted: 03 Nov 2010 04:47 AM PDT LockInfo is a great app available to jailbreakers that once again fills a functionality gap — this one making up for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad’s poor notification system. Until Apple implements a better solution, David Ashman has done an incredible job supplementing notifications with LockInfo. Even though LockInfo is an extremely intuitive and powerful app, the setup can be a bit tedious. But when you get it right, you’ll be in notification heaven! Hit the jump for a quick guide and a video with some tips for optimally configuring LockInfo. *As a side note, LockInfo is $4.99 right now, as of November 7, 2010 – that price will go to $7.99, so if you’ve been contemplating, you may want to jump on the current price. There is also a 14 day trial if you would like to test it out first.
First you’ll need to purchase LockInfo from Cydia. After you’ve done that, you will configure it through your main iPhone settings panel. You’ll see two sections you will use. The general LockInfo settings section and the Activator settings section. Activator is a universal app that’ll appear on its own once you have an app that supports it. It allows you to customize gestures to activate different apps. For example, I have Activator set to launch Infoshade for LockInfo when I hold down on the status bar. If I slide up from the bottom of my screen, it’ll launch a QuickSend window for iRealSMS. So once you’ve got LockInfo configured, go ahead and set whatever gestures are comfortable for you. LockInfo also has several plug-ins you can install via Cydia, which most if not all come at no additional cost. Everything from weather widgets, twitter, to do apps, RSS feeds, and more. I typically bypass a lot of plug-ins and here’s why: battery life. The general notification plug-ins is pretty universal. If your apps push themselves, why install a separate plug-in to fetch info and sacrifice precious battery? As far as Twitter notifications go, I use Boxcar. I also use it for Facebook. This way, I have one app that pushes for two. I’ve set Boxcar to launch my chosen Twitter client and to launch the Facebook app. So if I click any of these notifications from the homescreen, Boxcar will quickly put me right into my chosen client. Whether you use Boxcar, Notifo, or any other push notification app, it should work the same. Notifications will also be instant instead of polling at set intervals, like most plug-ins will require. LockInfo’s default notifications feature will also aggregate IMs from Beejive and any other application that allows notifications, even games like Words With Friends. It’ll simply suppress the default pop-up notifications and present them under the LockInfo notifications tab instead. Within LockInfo, you’ll be presented with 3 main views for information – lock screen, spring board, and Infoshade. While the first two are pretty easy to understand, Infoshade may not be. I find it best to compare it to an Android-style notification system. You can set a gesture in activator for Infoshade and it will simply drop down whenever you call it from the springboard gesture. So if you hear your e-mail chime in and you don’t want to exit out of what you’re doing, simply use your chosen gesture and Infoshade will drop down and present you with all your information. You can then quickly dismiss e-mails or notifications, or simply delete them. Mail also supports a quick view if you tap on an e-mail. If you’d like to respond, you can click the respond button and it’ll launch your mail app. Or you can trash it from the quick view screen. However you decide to set up LockInfo is up to you, these are just some helpful hints I’ve learned using it. If you’ve got more, be sure to share them in the comments for in our Jailbreak Forums! Also, if you’d like to see something in future updates or have a feature request (or need technical help), check out David Ashman’s webpage for LockInfo as well. Genius Recommendations return to iTunes Posted: 03 Nov 2010 04:43 AM PDT Back in September, when iTunes 10 launched, Apple introduced their new Ping social network. This was followed by iTunes 10.0.1 which added the Ping drop down options but also replaced the Genius sidebar with a new Ping sidebar. Earlier this week, Apple made some server-side changes (which means we don't have to update iTunes), and now Genius Recommendations have returned to the iTunes sidebar. If you haven’t selected a song, your sidebar will show you Genius recommendations for all your iTunes-purchased music, however once you select a song, a new sidebar comes up which combines both Genius and Ping. (Genius recommendations will appear at the bottom of the sidebar, and if you're a Ping user, your Ping activity will be displayed at the top.) Tell us, are you happy your Genius recommendations are back? Do you like the new combined sidebar? Do you still use Ping? [TUAW] Genius Recommendations return to iTunes is a story by TiPb. Apple to extend iTunes song previews to 90 seconds in the U.S. Posted: 03 Nov 2010 04:38 AM PDT Symphonic Distribution is reporting that Apple plans to increase song previews in iTunes from 30 seconds to 90 seconds in the U.S. According to a letter sent by Apple to label representatives, any song that is over 2 minutes and 30 seconds will be offering a 90 second preview and any song that is shorter in length will remain at the current 30 second preview.
There is no official word yet on when this new preview length will hit in the U.S. There is also no word on when or even if this feature will hit the rest of the world. This feature will offer users even more of a chance to hear if they are interested in songs by artists and offers artists the chance to sell more content at the same time. That is, if the record labels go along with it this time. Are you excited to gain longer previews? Let us know your thoughts on the upcoming and refreshing iTunes change.
