58-inch multitouch table runs on iPhone [Jailbreak + Video] Posted: 02 Nov 2010 02:04 PM PDT The guys behind the iPhone-powered 58-inch multitouch table (think Microsoft Surface) have released a video demonstrating how the system works. Essentially, all you do is hook up your iPhone 4 to the table-top display and away you go. The iPhone 4 display is replicated on the 58-inch screen, and behaves the same way a normal iPhone would (save for the 17x size amplification, of course). The two guys in the video seem to access the Springboard just fine, they swipe between pages and launch the Photos app. It doesn't look like a fake, as many readers claimed. The iPhone also seems to be able to output UI elements on that bigger screen just fine. Check out the video above to get a better impression of how it’s working so far. Although this is just a couple of dudes putting a good idea into effect, it would be awesome if we actually see this hit the market sometime down the road. Video after the break. Would you be willing to slap down your hard-earned cash for something like this if it’s ever released? Let us know what you think in the comments! [Mac Stories via Table.Connect]

iPhone and iPad gifts for business users – TiPb holiday gift guide Posted: 02 Nov 2010 12:07 PM PDT ‘Tis the season to be gifting and with iPhone and iPad increasingly making their way into business, there will be a lot of workers and enterprise users to shop for this year. That means not only devices like iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad all wrapped up and ready to go, but all the great apps and accessories that go with them. Is there a special business user in your life? If so, here’s TiPb helpful holiday gift guide! Don’t need anything for a business user? Check out the recommendations anyway, something great might still catch your eye. If not, no worries, we’ll have plenty more holiday gifts guides coming your way this month!
At the deskApple’s dock is sweet and simple but it doesn’t fit with any cases, even Apple’s own. And that’s just not how we do business. Instead, we love the Seidio Inno Dock Jr. for iPhone. Its elevated, adjustable dock connector can fit almost any case you throw at it. It’s not as long-lasting as a one piece, less adaptable dock, but it’s inexpensive enough to more than make up for it. A great iPad alternative is the Griffin A-Frame. And an extra Apple cable and power adapter is always handy. When it comes to apps, the recommendations get trickier. If we’re at our desks, we have our computers and computer apps, so iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad become secondary displays, something we want around for glance-able information or utilities, and something we can take with us. Appigo Todo and Omnifocus both take different paths to the same goal — getting things done. Appigo Todo has great sync options, Omnifocus ties in location, but both let us quickly make sure we’re on task. PC Calc, especially for accounts, engineers, developers, and number-crunchers of all types, let’s us quickly get answers while leaving the problem up on the main computer for easy reference. DropBox and Box.net are great online storage solutions with excellent iPhone and iPad apps so you can quickly peak at a file, watch a video, or listen to some music you’ve kept in sync from any computer you own.
On the roadWhen our business keeps us behind the wheel, a good car kit is essential. Whether we want to keep our iPhone perfectly positioned for turn-by-turn navigation, or the law requires us to keep our hands free for calls and music, the iGrip Universal Fit Vent Mount (or one of its handy alternate configurations) along with the BlackBerry VM-605 Bluetooth Premium Visor Handsfree will get us where we’re going. (That’s right, we’re actually recommending a BlackBerry accessory, it’s that good!). And when we need something to plug it in, right now we’re wrapping up the Griffin PowerJolt Plus because it will not only keep our iPhone or iPad juiced up, but it lets us charge something else as well via the 12v socket, built right in. And yes, we have tried to car-mount our iPads, but that big screen just moves around too much for our safety-concious liking. The Bluetooth works great though!
Once we’re set up, we need that navigation and entertainment we were talking about. Navigation is really an embarrassment of riches on the iPhone and now that we have streaming background audio in iOS 4, music and media are catching up nicely as well. When our business takes us places where data isn’t accessible, Navigon MobileNavigator is a big download but keeps all the maps on-board and ready. The TeleNav powered AT&T Navigator is for when we want to travel light and prefer to sip our maps online. Navigon is pay-up-front and also gives us international options if we want to buy them. AT&T Navigator is subscription based and carrier specific. While we’re driving, Slacker Radio is a great choice for lots of stations, and with local caching there’s no need to burn through data. Audible.com audio books can also be a life saver for when we commute. We don’t have much time to read so listening to everything from the classics to the latest best sellers while we drive is a treat. Both require subscriptions and make great gifts year-round. And if all mileage matters, Trip Cubby is just what the expense department ordered. In the airWhether we travel regularly or just to the occasional conference or trade show, we’re never be able to get enough power. While there are battery cases for iPhone, if they have an iPad, iPod, and other gear as well, a more universal charging solution, like the Ventev PowerCELL is in order. Good usability on the plane is also important, and for iPad nothing looks as executive or works as well as the Marware Eco-Vue. It has a built-in stand for easier typing, strap for one-handed carrying, and eco-leather finish for style and protection. For iPhone, something lighter and less bulky for better pocketability is in order, and the Case-Mate Barely There certainly fits that bill. And when we really need to get work done, an ultra-portable Bluetooth keyboard, like the Freedom i-Connex Mini Keyboard, is just be what the holidays ordered (don’t tell Steve Jobs!). Just pair up and start typing, on the plane or in the meeting.
To keep track off all our travel arrangements, we use TripIt. Just email all flight, hotel, and other confirmations to the TripIt address and it automagically populates our iPhone with all the details and extra information like airport maps. Since the app is free, a pro subscription makes a great gift and then TripIt even notifies us of any change in flight times. When we need to get some extra work done, both Documents to Go and QuickOffice keep us productive (and if the flight has Wi-Fi, we can even keep in sync with our cloud storage). Since all work and no play makes us dull boys and girls, we also load up with iTunes or Amazon gift certificates so we can download iTunes movies, TV shows, and iBooks or Amazon Kindle books. iBooks is frankly the better reading experience but Kindle has a much bigger library and works on a wide range of devices, so it comes down style vs. quantity and compatibility. Flash-playing Skyfire browser coming to iPhone this Thursday Posted: 02 Nov 2010 12:00 PM PDT After 2 months of waiting in review with Apple, the new Skyfire mobile browser will be approved and available in the App Store for iPhone and iPad at 9 a.m. ET on Thursday for just $2.99. From CNN Money:
We’ve previously heard that Microsoft worked with Apple to do server-side Silverlight transcoding and streaming to iPhone but this is the first we’ve seen anyone using the same approach for Flash. It should help users who want to see the 46% of web video not already available in HTML 5, though it still won’t give you Hulu — Hollywood blocks mobile access to online, Flash-based Hulu video. One step forward, half a step (and a kick in the shins) back. Will you be grabbing this Flash-converting browser once it hits the App Store on Thursday morning? Let us know in the comments below! Optoma introduces neo-i iPhone/iPod dock pico projector Posted: 02 Nov 2010 09:50 AM PDT On Monday, Optoma, introduced a new iPhone/iPod dock to add to their line of pico projectors. They showed off their new model titled the Neo-i which will allow you to display your videos at a resolution of 854×480 and support images of up to 120 inches. Another interesting feature is this will support any app that has TV out capabilities, such as Netflix. To fully take advantage of this unit you will need to be in a fairly dark room and ensure you have ample room between the wall/screen you are using and the projector. You will also be able to output 16W of stereo audio. Included are HDMI and VGA inputs for you to plug your computer or even your brand new Apple TV! The Neo-i is set to debut in mid-December for a price tag of $449. Will the Neo-i be on your Christmas wish-list or are you content with using AirPlay or wires to get the job done for your video needs? Indiana Hospital gets iPhone communication system Posted: 02 Nov 2010 09:35 AM PDT Voalte, a company that provides a unique communications system built on top of the Apple iPhone via WiFi, has added an additional hospital to their client list. Parkview General Hospital will now be utilizing the iPhone as a primary communications tool throughout their entire building. Voalte (pronounced volt) is adding clients to their books at a fast pace, all medical-related, and they seem to be expanding their reach very quickly. The Herald Tribune reports: Parkview General in Fort Wayne is the fifth hospital client for Voalte, which uses the iPhone’s Wi-Fi platform to pull together medical alarms, text and voice messages into one device a nurse can use from anywhere in the building. What does this mean for Apple? Ultimately, this adds to the headway Apple is making in the mobile enterprise space, and signals a furtherance in adoption among sensitive technological needs from respected organizations like hospitals and other primary care facilities. I know that stepping into a hospital and seeing all of this new tech would personally make things a little less worrisome for me, but then again I’m not your average iPhone non-enthusiast. What about you, would you trust a hospital staff that stays connected to the network via their iPhone, or do you prefer the old-fashioned way? “Paging all readers, code blue, let us know in the comments stat!” [Mac Daily News via Herald Tribune] Indiana Hospital gets iPhone communication system is a story by TiPb. iLuv Skin Case for iPad – accessory review Posted: 02 Nov 2010 09:08 AM PDT The iLuv Skin Case is definitely an extremely thin case. It is made of a soft rubber silicon material that feels extremely smooth to the touch. Some people may be willing to sacrifice a little bit of protection to have a thinner more portable case but in my opinion, this case was more than a little too thin. If you want something extremely thin and don’t plan on transporting your iPad very far in this case, you should be okay. Other than that, this case is more for looks than anything else.
I wouldn’t say it’s durable by any means. And after taking the case off and putting it back on a few times, the material starts to lose its shape. This is the sacrifice you’ll make by using a case as thin as the iLuv skin case. In my honest opinion, I’d probably step up to a case that is a little thicker. Sure it may cost you a few more dollars but you’ll be buying another one of these pretty quickly since it’ll lose its shape. I’d even go as far as to say if you snag it on something, it will tear very easily. iLuv makes several other great cases that don’t sacrifice protection when it comes to making a sleek case. I’m not quite sure why they compromised so much on this one. The iLuv Skin Case is available in the TiPb iPad Accessory Store as well as several other cases. If you already have this case, let us know what you thought of it in the comments. Pros
Cons

TiP: How to enable HD video recording on iPhone 3GS [Jailbreak] Posted: 02 Nov 2010 07:57 AM PDT Are you an iPhone 3GS user who’s wondered how-to enable HD video recording without having to upgrade to an iPhone 4? Well, if you’re not afraid of Jailbreak and are comfortable with SSH, there is a new hack available to let you get your HD on. Now the iPhone 3GS simply doesn’t have the same quality camera as the iPhone 4, but this tweak will take your video recording from a measly 640×480 to 1080×800.
To install this tweak, ensure you are jailbroken and follow the steps below:
A word of caution, if you are not an experienced user who has SSH’ed into your phone before be very careful as this can cause issues and require a restore if done incorrectly. As always do this tweak at your own risk. If you have an iPhone 3GS and you do this mod let us know how it worked for you and how the install process went for you. Tips of the day range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary. If you already know this tip, keep the link handy as a quick way to help a friend. Are Apple and Google both trying to acquire BOKU? Posted: 02 Nov 2010 07:07 AM PDT TechCrunch is reporting that both Apple and Google may be interested in acquiring start-up company BOKU, which allows users to purchase goods on their mobile phones. All you would have to do is enter in your mobile phone number and your product would be ordered and put onto your mobile bill. As of now BOKU is partnering with major carriers all over the world and they claim they are already capable of servicing over 1.6 billion users. They also claim that all major US carriers are supported already. Talks are still in the early stages and neither company is willing to make comments on the talks that have occurred at this time. It appears as if both Apple and Google are serious about getting their hands into the mobile payment business and this acquisition would make purchasing easier than ever. Are you interested in purchasing items on your iPhone and having it billed to your mobile bill or would you rather just pay for it on your credit card and not have to worry about paying a larger phone bill? We want to know your thoughts in the comments section. [ TechCrunch ] Are Apple and Google both trying to acquire BOKU? is a story by TiPb. This feed is sponsored by The iPhone Blog Store. |
Will the Mac App Store run iPad apps? Posted: 01 Nov 2010 06:55 PM PDT Last night during the iPad Live podcast, while Georgia and I were discussing the rumor about Apple holding a secret iOS developer session, she conjectured that Apple might be showing developers a way to quickly make their iPad apps run on the Mac. Crazy? Apple brought iPhone apps to the iPad, even created a 2x pixel doubling mode to support them on the larger screen. Would boxing them on a Mac screen be any crazier? Apple has also gone to the trouble of making multitouch track pads on their MacBooks and the multitouch Magic Mouse and Magic TrackPad for the Mac Mini, iMac, and Mac Pro, so while it won’t be the same as direct contact on a glass screen, it might make sense for a few very popular apps. Like games. The Mac has never been the gaming platform of choice, and Apple’s reluctance to support it hasn’t helped matters. But then came iOS and games for iPhone, iPod touch, and now iPad account for a hefty portion of App Store sales. Valve has come to Mac, now the App Store, and with it maybe Angry Birds? That’s what Dave Winer is thinking, and that would be quite the turn around. Speaking of which, games that require an accelerometer and gyroscope might not work so well, or might require alternate controls on the Mac, just like some non-game apps might need UI that better fill a giant Mac LED display. Steve Jobs talked about full screen apps, however. He talked about auto-save and saved state upon relaunch. iOS developers know how to do all that, and many of them have existing, popular brands. Where full screen apps make sense, iOS developers have already figured a lot of that out and Apple might just be showing them how to make it a reality on the Mac. The Mac App Store will open in just over 2 months. Who wants to bet we’ll see a bunch of well known, just recently ported iOS apps front and center when it does?
