iOS 4.2 beta 3

Like clockwork Apple has released iOS 4.2 beta 3 for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad for developers, along with the requisite SDK and iTunes 10.1 beta 2.

As always, this is pre-release software meant for developers to test their applications and Apple warns it might prove too buggy or unstable for daily use on your main device. If you don’t need it, wait for the general release.

If you do need it, grab it from developer.apple.com and let us know what secrets you find lurking inside! For more, check out our complete iOS 4.2 beta walkthrough.

Apple in talks with Indian carriers for CDMA iPhone?

Posted: 12 Oct 2010 11:59 AM PDT

The Wall Street Journal is claiming that Apple is in talks with 2 Indian carriers over a CDMA version of the iPhone. The two carriers in question are Reliance Communications and Tata Teleservices. No time frame was mentioned except “near future”.

CDMA iPhones are apparently all the rage lately, especially since Verizon iPhone rumors won’t die. Although GSM may be considered a worldwide standard these days, the CDMA market still caters to around 550 million users. Adding them into Apple’s pool of customers should definitely be something they’re interested in doing. India’s mobile phone market has exploded in recent years. Nearly 20% of mobile phone subscribers are CDMA customers. That averages out to around 130 million CDMA subscribers in India alone. It’s logical Apple would have an interest.

India’s phone market has been a heated competition between top manufacturers like HTC, RIM, and Nokia. Perhaps Apple wants a piece of the CDMA subscriber base to increase their extremely low market share in India. Could all these CDMA iPhone rumors be misplaced or do you think we’ll see a CDMA iPhone sooner rather than later?

Audiopress for iPhone – app review

Posted: 12 Oct 2010 10:34 AM PDT

Audiopress for iPhone is an amazing little app that will let you aggregate all of your podcasts, live radio, and pretty much any news audio into one easy to use app.  It also allows for background audio so you can start playing a podcast within the app, close it out, and continue browsing or doing whatever you’d like while it streams in the background.  Podcasts can quickly start taking up a lot of space on your device if you’re bad about deleting them (which I am), so streaming them may be a much better option for those of you who’d like to save space on your device.  Hit the jump for more info and a promo video!

[iTunes Link]

Just like you can create categories for your RSS feeds, you can create playlists within Audiopress. If you want your tech streams separate, you can create one for that and another for business or whatever other categories that interest you. One feature I particularly liked is when you go to listen to a podcast, it also shows you a list of previous podcasts from that feed.

You can also choose to search categories within Audiopress and find new podcasts and radio streams to listen to. I found a couple that looked interesting to me that I’ve become a regular listener. Before Audiopress, I’m not sure I would have ever taken the time to dig through iTunes or online radio streams to find more podcasts. So for those of you looking for something to get you more into podcasting or if you need help finding more content to listen to, this may be a good choice for you.

The app also supports Facebook integration, so if you’ve got a Facebook account, you can skip the sign-up and just link your Facebook account instead.

Pros

  • Facebook integration makes signing up easy
  • Search and suggestions have quite a few sources to choose from for an app being so new to the App Store
  • Podcasts show all previous episodes as well, making it easy for catching up on episodes you have have missed
  • Playlists are extremely easy to make and build

Cons

  • An iPad version would be welcome
  • AudioArticles not available (yet)

Verizon iPhone: What you’ll gain and what you’ll give up

Posted: 12 Oct 2010 08:29 AM PDT

Verizon rumors have come to a boil over the past few weeks.  Not only are we hearing Verizon rumors from reputable sources like the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times, we’ve heard from Verizon on the fact that they’re trying to find a way to integrate simultaneous voice and data into their network.  Some analysts may say this is to prepare for the launch of an iPhone on Verizon.

Whether or not you’d like to leave AT&T, we’ve got to face the fact that Verizon has its down sides too (aside from Apple and Verizon battling out their obsessive needs for control). One of those being that pesky simultaneous voice and data issue.

Sprint and Verizon both use a technology referred to as CDMA with the accompanying EVDO rev A data, while AT&T and T-Mobile use a technology referred to as GSM with EDGE and now HSPA for data.  While CDMA may have better voice quality, none of the carriers have (yet) rolled out EVDO rev B which supports simultaneous voice and data, or committed to an EVDO rev A workaround to enable it with the current technology. They’re all moving to LTE anyway, so it simply may not have been a priority.

What does this mean for the end user?  It means you can’t update your Facebook status, check your e-mail, or look something up on the web while on a phone call.  Verizon has tried to downplay this in the past by saying simultaneous voice and data isn’t all that important.  Many business users may disagree.  There’s been numerous times I’ve went to look something up for a client while on the phone.  Having to hang up with them in order to do that would become highly annoying for many business users who have become accustomed to being able to have that functionality.

Now it appears Verizon is willing to do something about it.  No exact details have been given except for the fact that they are working on a solution that would offer simultaneous voice and data on their existing network.  No firm date has been thrown out except that it should be available as of early next year.

One of things holding me back from Verizon is the fact that I can’t browse and talk. CDMA is also a technology that isn’t supported worldwide.  I like knowing that if I choose to unlock my phone or buy an unlocked version, I can pop a foreign SIM in my phone and know it’ll work in almost every country since GSM has become a worldwide standard.  If Verizon makes the iPhone a world phone like they have with some Blackberries, I’d be more apt to set that concern aside.

Are any of these obstacles a big deal to you guys? Would Verizon solving these problems make you more apt to jump from the Death Star to Big Red? Let us know in the comments!

Updated: Greenpois0n jailbreak released! [Jailbreak]

Posted: 12 Oct 2010 08:07 AM PDT

greenpois0n

Earlier today, Chronic Dev Team member Joshua Hill (@p0sixninja) announced via twitter that they’ve released Greenpois0n, a jailbreak tool for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad running iOS 4.1. This falls behind their initial goal of pushing the jailbreak out on 10/10/10 at 10:10:10AM due to GeoHot releasing his Limera1n jailbreak first.

Previously based on the SHAtter exploit, Greenpois0n now uses the same bootrom USB exploit that GeoHot implemented in his own release late last week. They decided on using the same exploit as to not give Apple any heads up on how the SHAtter exploit was conducted, in order to ensure that Apple doesn’t quickly patch both exploits in a future iOS update.

You can grab Greenpois0n via greenpoison.com, but you may also want to visit their blog before attempting the jailbreak for more info and to make sure your iOS device is supported. As with the Limera1n exploit, this allows for jailbreaking the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch (3rd and 4th gen only) and the iPad. Additionally, they’ve announced that a future update will also include a jailbreak for the Apple TV (2010) and the 2nd generation iPod Touch.

Will you be jailbreaking your iOS device using Greenpois0n? Let us know in the comments!

UPDATED: Seems to be some launch day pains. RC3 seems solid but you may want to hold off using greenpois0n on your main phone until the initial bugs get worked out. Either way, if you want to talk about it or get help, head on over to our Jailbreak Forum.

iPhone experiencing annoying daylight savings alarm clock bug. Software fix on the way.

Posted: 12 Oct 2010 05:56 AM PDT

iPhone users living in southern Australia were supposed to get an extra hour of sleep with the change to daylight savings on October 3, but didn’t because the alarms on their iPhones went off an hour early. Apple knows about the bug and it should be fixed in the next update.

This is a very strange glitch because the iPhone’s clock correctly updated with daylight savings, but the recurring alarm clock does not recognize the new time. However, a one-time alarm works just fine.

A representative from Apple Australia said that Apple is “aware of this issue and already developed a fix which will be available to customers in an upcoming software update.” I expect this update will arrive before daylight savings goes into effect in the US in a few weeks.

In the meantime, users report that the best solution at the moment is to either set a new alarm every day or set your recurring alarm for an hour later than you want it to go off.

Any of our Australian readers experience this annoying bug?

Apple Trademark Request on “There’s An App For That” Approved

Posted: 12 Oct 2010 05:30 AM PDT

Since the birth of the App Store and their ever popular commercials back in 2009, Apple and iOS devices have always been associated with the popular slogan “There’s an app for that”.  It only makes sense Apple would want to trademark the slogan that made the App Store so popular.  It’s not just an advertising tool anymore, it’s become so much more than that within our culture.  I frequently joke around when someone asks me how to do something, a frequent response to any iOS device user is “There’s an app for that.”  And normally, there is.

Apple originally filed for the trademark back in December 2009.  The first use sited in their trademark application was in January 2009.  The trademark will cover retail store services, computer software services provided via retail or internet, and handheld mobile electronic devices, and other consumer electronics.  Basically, Apple is trying to cover all bases to make sure that consumers only associate their popular catch phrase with iOS devices and not other mobile brands that may offer similar services (i.e. – Android, Blackberry, etc..).
