UPDATED: Limera1n released! BEFORE Greenpois0n [Jailbreak]

Posted: 09 Oct 2010 02:11 PM PDT

Geohot has struck first by releasing his limera1n jailbreak for all 3rd gen and 4th gen devices, using Comex’s userland tools to make it untethered. While there was talk of consolidating Chronic Dev Team’s Greenpois0n jailbreak with Geohot’s Limera1n, Geohot has decided to release his first. Chronic Dev Team has responded — angrily — on twitter

Will they go forward with Greenpois0n as planned? Stay tuned…

Note: Before using any jailbreak, make sure you have saved your SHSH and backed up your iOS device with iTunes. If you wish to unlock or keep your unlock, make sure to use TinyUmbrella method to remain at 1.59.00 or wait for pwnagetool’s custom IPSW. TiPb.com is not responsible for any damage done to your iOS device or any lost information as a result of using these jailbreaks.

From limera1n.com

  • limera1n, 6 months in the making
  • iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 3G, iPad, iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4G
  • 4.0-4.1 and beyond+++
  • limera1n is unpatchable
  • untethered thanks to jailbreakme star comex
  • released today to get chronicdev to do the right thing
  • brought to you by geohot
  • Mac and Linux coming soon
  • follow the instructions in the box, sadly limera1n isn’t one click
  • that’s the price of unpatchability

UDPATE: Chronic Dev Team is now reporting that Geohot’s untether is incomplete and unstable.

UPDATE 2: Comex has updated again, via Twitter:

Fine, geohot’s release now has my approval, because otherwise everyone would use the initial (pulled) broken version. Ugh. I don’t guarantee limerain will actually work, though. It also doesn’t work on Mac/Linux… or iPhone 3G or iPod Touch second gen…

UPDATE 3: Chronic Dev Team is now delaying Greenpois0n so as to incorporate Geohot’s exploit and burn their own.

Is iPhone 4 “Glassgate” real?

Posted: 09 Oct 2010 01:11 PM PDT

iPhone 4 Scratched

Since Ryan Block, formerly editor-in-chief of Engadget and current co-founder of GDGT, reported Apple was in a secret lock-down over slide-on cases and particulate causing iPhone 4 glass backplates to scratch and break, there’s been a lot of debate as to the merit and credibility of the charges.

The Macalope takes particular issue with it in Macworld:

This piece is a hopeless mess of unsourced accusations blended with inflammatory rhetoric and vomited onto the Internet like an Apple rumor ipecac.

Marc Flores of Intomobile points out that, while anything is possible, it certainly doesn’t seem widespread like Antennagate:

The reason that the GDGT article is shocking isn't because it's another potential scandal, but that it's the first any of us has heard of the issue. Why is that? The iPhone 4 has been on the market for four months now and several folks have been using slider cases on it since day one. Where is the angry mob?

Our own editor-in-chief, Dieter Bohn, did get a scratch on his iPhone 4 back the day it came out, but that was as a result — he thinks — of particulate on a table. And he wasn’t using a slider case but Apple’s own bumper.

Like I said before though, no one else at TiPb has had a problem and we used all sorts of cases all the time.

Still, Block’s reputation and credibility in the industry makes the story impossible to ignore, so we’ll be following it to see what, if anything, happens next.

iPad launching at Walmart next week

Posted: 09 Oct 2010 09:30 AM PDT

We’ve known iPad is coming to Walmart for a long while now but it looks like next week it will finally arrive. Following on the heels of Target and Amazon — and Apple Online and Apple Retail — if Apple can meet demand that’s a huge retail footprint for iPad this holiday season.

And I’m starting to run out of 7-Eleven and QuickyMart jokes about where it will show up next, so if you have any ideas drop them in the comments.

Limera1n teases all iOS device exploit, return of Geohot?

Posted: 08 Oct 2010 06:13 PM PDT

limetime

Looks like Geohot wants back with limera1n and back in on the Jailbreak scene. Just day after Chronic Dev Team and Comex announced the 10/10/10 release date of Greenpois0n, he has announced his own bootrom exploit, which he wants included in Greenpois0n, no doubt delaying it’s release… What will Chronic Dev Team do? According to the @chronicdevteam twitter account:

We are currently working the “situation” out. Don’t worry, you’ll still get the jailbreak in the end, nothing to be concerned about.

The story of Geohot is well known and his achievements in the iPhone hacking world are well documented…

  • He created the first hardware unlock
  • Founder of iPhone wiki
  • Published the first iPhone hardware unlock for bootloader 4.6
  • Found the iBoot Environment Variable Overflow exploit.
  • Released purplera1n
  • Released purplesn0w
  • Independently found the usbcontrolmsg(0×21, 2) exploit.
  • Released blackra1n
  • Released blacksn0w

Earlier this year, Geohot announced that he was quitting the Jailbreak scene due to constant pestering and criticism from fans and iPhone Jailbreakers whom he said robbed him of the joy of his work. His rumored Limera1n never released. So why now? Why waste an exploit (which will be patched by apple) on an already exploited and jailbroken firmware?

More as this develops.

Has Apple always had a 7-inch iPad?

Posted: 08 Oct 2010 05:38 PM PDT

As with Intel Macs and CDMA iPhones, I always assume Apple tried out every logical variation of a product in the labs, and has every sensible alternative prototyped and tested as a release candidate before ultimately deciding the best device with which to go to market. So it’s not surprise Jim Dalrymple of the Loop confirms the oft-rumored 7-inch iPad has been around since the get go:

The fact is, Apple already has a 7-inch iPad. They have had one of the smaller devices since they started making the 9.7-inch iPad that we have now.

To be clearer, the two devices were developed at the same time. They have pretty much the same specs, except, of course, the 9.7-inch model has a higher density screen than its smaller counterpart.

Whether Apple will ever release it or not is another question. They did introduce an iPod mini (now iPod nano) to their music player line but have thus far not introduced any new iPhone sizes. I’m betting iPad will be more like iPhone: a product and not a line of products.
