iOS apps can be installed on Apple TV, they just can’t be launched (yet?) Posted: 04 Oct 2010 03:14 PM PDT Developer Steve Troughton-Smith has discovered that you can install iOS apps on the new iOS Apple TV, you just can’t launch them yet because Apple TV lacks the capacity to do so.
Of course, adding that capability will no doubt be high on the jailbreak to-do list… if Apple themselves don’t do it first. (Fingers crossed). Google TV cometh [the competition] Posted: 04 Oct 2010 11:42 AM PDT Apple just launched the second edition of Apple TV (see our review), Microsoft has Media Center, and now it’s Google’s turn with Google TV. Logitech launches their vision soon, as does Sony, so once again it’s Apple’s integrated model against Google’s de-coupled software, and only consumer choice can win. To make their case for your living room eyeballs, Google has set up a new http://www.google.com/TV/ site, and it looks… well, I can’t tell because it’s in Flash but here’s the friendlier version and that looks great. While Apple hasn’t (yet?) seen fit to give us apps (or a browser) on our iOS Apple TV’s, the Android-based Google TV has them out the gate. (Though like every similar service, there’s likely to be much less available outside the US.) This is serious competition from a serious competitor, is Apple TV 2010 enough for now or does Apple have to iterate faster now? Google TV cometh [the competition] is a story by TiPb. iPad now available from Target, Amazon Posted: 04 Oct 2010 07:08 AM PDT As expected Target has begun selling Apple’s iPad, and if our inbox and subsequent searches are to be believed, online retail giant Amazon has joined them. Like our early screenshots showed, Target is offering the complete line of iPads. Amazon is only selling the Wi-Fi iPad though 3rd party resellers may or may not have the 3G model available (the page was showing some, then popping up errors, so your luck may vary). Apple moved millions of iPads via their own Apple Retail and Apple Online stores and getting them onto the shelves (real or virtual) of more and major outlets can only help them sell more. The only question is whether or not iPad reaches saturation point before we start the see them behind the counter at Quicky Mart. Do you still download or sync podcasts onto your iPhone or iPad? Posted: 04 Oct 2010 04:11 AM PDT The new Apple TV is famously streaming-only but with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad you can still choose between downloading certain types of media to your local device or streaming them straight from the internet. This pertains mostly to audio and video podcasts either in the iTunes Store app or right inside Safari from a direct, iOS-friendly link, but it struck me when reviewing Apple TV (2010) just how little I actually download any more. A year ago I subscribed to tons of podcasts in iTunes and synced them over to my iPhone and original Apple TV. Today I sync almost nothing. I haven’d downloaded a podcast in months. When I see in RSS or Twitter a new episode of a podcast I listen to or watch is available, I just hit the link and start streaming, and iOS 4’s background music API is solid enough that I seldom have to worry about downloading it. It mostly — though not always — remembers my place when I come back to it the next day or even the next week and just keeps right on streaming. Sure, it uses 3G data and depending on your plan and network reliability that might be a deal-breaker but for me, not having to remember to sync content over and being able to pull something up and just listen on demand is killer. How about you, do you still download or sync podcasts onto your iPhone or iPad? Do you still download or sync podcasts onto your iPhone or iPad? is a story by TiPb. Has Apple dropped AirPrint support for 2nd-Gen iPod touch Posted: 04 Oct 2010 03:39 AM PDT Apple have silently changed the details of AirPrint support since the release of iOS 4.2 Beta 2 last week. Originally the AirPrint capability was listed by Apple as supporting the iPod touch 2nd Generation when it was announced back on the 15th September:
After the release of the latest iOS Beta the press release has now been changed to read:
So it looks like if you have an iPod touch 2nd Generation, printing will be out of reach for you. A bit sneaky to change a press release a few weeks later. Adidas pulls out of $10 million iAd deal? Posted: 03 Oct 2010 08:22 PM PDT According to a couple of mobile industry executives, Adidas has pulled out of their $10 million deal with Apple to provide ads from the shoemaker under Apple’s iAd mobile advertising platform. This comes after Chanel, one of the companies included as a partner in the initial iAd launch, cancelled their own campaign. From Business Insider:
To top it off, while iAds has grabbed a lot of marketshare away from Google and Microsoft, some don’t believe the economics surrounding the validity of the iAd platform will ultimately pay off for Apple or its partners in the long run (or developers according to Crossforward). How do you feel about iAds and the way Apple is treading in these new waters? Let us know in the comments below!
