Keynote, Numbers, Pages updated for iPad Posted: 22 Sep 2010 03:15 PM PDT Apple has released version 1.2 updates for their iWork touch suite — Keynote, Numbers, and Pages for iPad. Microsoft Office export and MobileMe iDisk compatibility headline the new features. No word on AirPrint, of course, but knowing Apple they’ll only pull that trigger once iOS 4.2 goes into general release and not a millisecond sooner (though we’d dearly love to be proven wrong on that). For the full list, follow on after the break. [$9.99 each - Keynote iTunes link, Numbers iTunes link, Pages iTunes link, thanks Rich, Jørn, and Jeremy!]

Apple allows custom iPhone ringtone makers into the App Store Posted: 22 Sep 2010 02:30 PM PDT Custom ringtone makers for the iPhone are the latest group of of apps to suddenly gain approval for the App Store. This correlates directly with Apple’s recent changes to their App Store policies, allowing 3rd party Google Voice apps and other apps that Apple had previously banned or rejected from their mobile app marketplace, or simply left in limbo. Techcrunch reports:
Another segment of apps that Apple has confirmed does not directly compete with their own app and service offerings has been revealed. I wonder what types of apps we may see pop up next that weren’t previously allowed? What’s your opinion on Apple’s recent lax in App Store restrictions? Let us know in the comments! What could Apple be planning with Rovi? Posted: 22 Sep 2010 02:16 PM PDT On Monday Fortune brought word that Apple had entered into a multiyear licensing deal with Rovi, which could cover everything from TV guides to DRM. But what could Apple want with this tech? Gene Munster, of course, still thinks Apple will build their own TV. I still think that’s a leftover rumor from when they were readying the 27″ iMac. With a $99 Apple TV on the way, Apple doesn’t have to worry about competing with Sony or Samsung in the lower-margin, high cost, premium TV market but can simply piggy back onto any existing panel in the living room. Likewise, I don’t think Apple is going into the PVR business. I used to, and they have patents for it, but it smells like one of those things Apple considers the past, not the future, and Apple is ruthless about jettisoning the past. As to DRM, Apple already has FairPlay, the iTunes DRM, could what Rovi has be a better solution? A more appealing one for iTunes TV show rental holdouts NBC and CBS? It seems far more likely that Apple just wanted to secure what it already uses Rovi to provide — information about the content already on iTunes. Fake jailbreak tool for iOS 4.x is stealing passwords Posted: 22 Sep 2010 11:14 AM PDT There seems to be a fake jailbreak tool circulating at the moment that is being called “greenpois0n” that is claiming to be using the SHAtter exploit. Now this would all be fine and dandy except for the simple fact that the SHAtter jailbreak exploit has yet to be released by the Chronic Development Team. According to security researcher Costin Raiu at the Kapersey Labs, all that greenpois0n is doing is stealing users passwords. We’ve seen scams similar to this before and we will more than likely see them again in the future so please remember if you see any website or program that claims to be capable of jailbreaking a iOS device running 4.0.2 or above, it is highly likely a scam or something much more damaging unless of course if it were to be released by Dev Team or Chronic Development Team themselves. For more jailbreaking information be sure to visit our jailbreak and unlock forum. Fake jailbreak tool for iOS 4.x is stealing passwords is a story by TiPb. DropBox 1.3 for iPhone, iPad now in App Store Posted: 22 Sep 2010 11:12 AM PDT DropBox for iPhone and iPad has just been updated to version 1.3 and you can get it now from the iTunes App Store. Like Apple’s own MobileMe iDisk, it lets you store files online and sync them locally as well. Unlike iDisk it’s lightning fast, provides versioning (like Time Machine), and does a host of other great stuff as well. New features and fixes in 1.3 include:
The app is free, the service is free up to 2GB and then you can pay for 50GB and 100GB options. If you try out the new version, let us know what you think. Personally, I’m not digging the new UI yet, but I’ll give it some time… DropBox 1.3 for iPhone, iPad now in App Store is a story by TiPb. This feed is sponsored by The iPhone Blog Store. |
iPhone 4 cases that fit your cables Posted: 22 Sep 2010 10:02 AM PDT iPhone 4 cases that fit your cablesNot all iPhone 4 cases are compatible with all iPhone 4 cables — even Apple’s bumper doesn’t work with their own A/V cable! — but there are several cases that work with a wide variety, including A/V, car kits, and chargers. Here are two of our favorites on the ultra-light side: Incipio Ultralight Feather Case for iPhone 4 Feather is made of an ultra light, ultra strong polymer for light as a feather, form-fitting durable protection without the added bulk. Feather features a soft touch matte finish and includes 2 surface protectors and a cleaning cloth. Feather by Incipio is so thin that it allows the iPhone 4 to be used with many of the docks on the market. Case-Mate Barely There Case for iPhone 4 The Barely There is Case-Mate’s new line of sporty cases for the iPhone 4. These cases are designed to help protect the design of the iPhone 4 while allowing more of it to show. There’s also a Chrome version (Georgia’s favorite!) for those of you who want to add some mirror-bright bling to your iPhone 4. Both are available now in a wide variety of colors from the TiPb iPhone 4 accessory store, check them out! iPhone 4 cases that fit your cables is a story by TiPb. Netflix introducing video streaming service in Canada just in time for Apple TV debut Posted: 22 Sep 2010 09:32 AM PDT Netflix has made its very first foreign expansion by introducing their service of streaming video content into Canada. The service is now available and will cost you $7.99 per month. This is great news for those of you in Canada as you will not be left out in the cold when Apple TV starts to ship (any day now). The company confirmed that not only will it support Apple TV but Apple’s iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch will also be compatible with the streaming service in conjunction with the appropriate Netflix application. If you live in Canada and were not going to make the Apple TV purchase, does this change your mind? ‘Army of Darkness’ iPhone game in the works – “Groovy” Posted: 22 Sep 2010 09:08 AM PDT Evil Dead fans can finally breath a sigh of relief as you will soon be getting your first iOS game based off one of the popular cult classic movies staring the one and only Bruce Campbell. Army of Darkness will be brought to us by Backflip Studios and is promised to be worthy of the movie.
The game is said to have all of the classic witty quotes and is hybrid castle/tower defense inspired as your main objective is to protect the Necrinomicon from the Deadites using chainsaws, boomsticks, etc… Sadly, Army of Darkness will not be introduced into the App Store until early 2011 but that gives you plenty of time to watch the film if you have not done so already! Movie trailer after the break!

iPhone: 3% market share vs. 39% profit share Posted: 22 Sep 2010 08:41 AM PDT iPhone has tiny market share, monumental profit share according to Canaccord Genuity and IDC, and pretty much everyone else who’s ever mentioned it. TiPb’s been pointing this out for a long time of course, but boy does the above graphic make it visually apparent just what the difference is. Why do we, as users, care if Apple’s making more money than everyone else (most of them combined)? Because it means Apple can keep making the iPhone they want to make, not the iPhone carriers dictate they make. Apple doesn’t have to add big logos on the front of their phones, add carrier bloatware or let carriers make exclusive deals to lock out apps, lock out search engines, or replace Apple’s own app store with a carrier store that won’t let you take your apps with you to other devices and providers. Sure, Apple will make mistakes and get things wrong, but ultimately Apple is a company that believes we, the end users, are their customers — not the carriers. So, yes, Nokia has a bigger market share and Android likely will as well soon enough. Apple’s laughing all the way to the bank, though, and providing a phone that may not be as “open” as we like to us, but certainly isn’t as tragically “open” to the manufacturers and carriers as the competition. We’ll see what, if anything, that means to a potential Verizon iPhone deal… [Fortune] iPhone: 3% market share vs. 39% profit share is a story by TiPb.
