Windows Phone 7 team hold mock funeral for iPhone

Windows Phone 7 iPhone funeral

Microsoft held a mock funeral today for the iPhone as part of their Windows Phone 7 release to master (RTM) celebration. Followed — we $#!t you not — by a Thriller dance.

It would have been more accurate had they been carrying a Kin.

Apple to change free iPhone 4 case program on September 30

Posted: 10 Sep 2010 05:13 PM PDT

Apple iPhone 4 free bumper case

Apple is going to change their free iPhone 4 case program on September 30, the date originally given for the initial term of the program by Steve Jobs during the iPhone 4 press conference.

We now know that the iPhone 4 antenna attenuation issue is even smaller than we originally thought. A small percentage of iPhone 4 users need a case, and we want to continue providing them a Bumper case for free. For everyone else, we are discontinuing the free case program on all iPhone 4s sold after September 30, 2010. We are also returning to our normal returns policy for all iPhone 4s sold after September 30. Users experiencing antenna issues should call AppleCare to request a free Bumper case.

So if you bought or buy your iPhone 4 on or before September 30, and you just want a free case, download the Apple case program app and order it asap.

If you get your iPhone 4 on or after October 1 and have a real death grip or death touch problem, you’ll have to talk to Apple Care for your free case.

Make sense?

[Apple.com, thanks to everyone who sent this in.]

iPod nano fashion: a lady’s best high-tech friend?

Posted: 10 Sep 2010 11:21 AM PDT

iPod nano fashion? I was more than excited when Steve Jobs announced the new iPod nano. Not because I am a huge music lover but because of the multitude of different ways that I could use it. This new iPod nano is a tech geek girls fashion dream come true.

Follow along after the break to see just some of the ways I’ve been accessorizing with the new iPod nano, and how well it’s been working out.

iPod nano hair clip

This may be more of a dream than a reality. I found that if you use the iPod nano all alone in your hair it is prone to slipping out. If you are going to put it in your hair it is much more secure if you attach it to a hair elastic. It was already slipping out before I even began to walk around. I think if Apple has added a bit of rubber to the edges of the clip it would be much more secure. Steve why did you let me down!

iPod nano pony tail clip

Wearing the iPod nano in your hair is quite cute but lacks the functionality of being able to actually see the new 1.5-inch screen. If you already have a playlist playing and are comfortable using the headset remote buttons to play, pause, and change, its ok but still not ideal. It was quite secure though. You could even go jogging and have them stay in place.

iPod nano watch

The iPod nano is just screaming to be used as a watch. It is the perfect size and with a multitude of different functions it may be the first in a new smart watch generation. Get real iOS and and App Store onto this bad boy and there’d be no stopping us. For the band I use a tight fitting bracelet which is not too thick. This way the clasp on the iPod Nano is able to fully close. I also really liked attaching the iPod nano to my hair elastic. It was quite secure and comfortable.

iPod nano earring

Yes the new iPod nano are very capable of being used as earrings. It is easy to use some two part epoxy and attach a loop and then a regular fishhook earring holder. It is a bit heavy for an earring (though I have worn heavier). It would also present the same issue of not being able to easily change your application or music. For the picture I just clipped the nano right onto my ear, this was not the most comfortable of ways to wear it, however, nor was it very secure.

iPod nano necklace

This is one of my favourite ways to wear the iPod nano. It makes a beautiful show piece and is very user friendly. It is also very beautiful and when I go around people just think it is another piece of jewelry. Then I turn it on and everyone is left in awe.

And more…?

I am sure that I have just covered the tip of the iceberg with some cool new ways to wear your iPod Nano. If you have any other cool new ideas, comment away!

iPhone being tested at JP Morgan, other enterprises

Posted: 10 Sep 2010 09:25 AM PDT

iPhone is being tested at JP Morgan and other large enterprises as an alternative to RIM’s BlackBerry, Bloomberg reports. They have 220,000 employees. UBS AG with 63,000 employees is doing likewise and Standard Chartered Bank will have 15,000 iPhones distributed by end of year.

Cost savings and employee preference were the two biggest factors cited by companies for the shift in the Sanford Bernstein survey. Employees would rather own an iPhone and are increasingly willing to buy the device themselves, which helps cuts costs as companies look to rein in spending, said Sanford Bernstein's Ferragu.

Wells Fargo previously switched to iPhone and iPad. Enterprise is a momentum game and it looks like that momentum is changing.

Are you using iPhone in your enterprise?

Google Voice returning to App Store soon?

Posted: 10 Sep 2010 07:23 AM PDT

GV Mobile developer, Sean Kovacs, had some good news to share on Twitter saying that his unofficial Google Voice application GV Mobile should now be allowed into the App Store. Since GV Mobile does not violate any of the new rules regarding the app review guidelines that Apple has laid out for developers, Kovacs figured why not resubmit his application and try to finally get it back where it belongs.

GV Mobile made it’s first appearance into the App Store back in July of 2009 and was later yanked by Apple due to allegedly duplicating the iPhone's calling and text messaging features. Later it was rumored that Apple laid blame on AT&T was for the removal of the application.

How’s your iPhone data speed with iOS 4.1?

Posted: 10 Sep 2010 05:20 AM PDT

iPhone 4 international Speed Test

My iPhone 4 is getting pretty much the same 3G HSPA speed under iOS 4.1 as it was under 4.0.x, how about you? There was nothing overtly mention in iOS 4.1 that should have changed things, but you never know what gets tuned under the covers, never mind what your carrier is up to in your region.

One of our readers, Paul, swears his speed has tanked by a factor of 10 since the update.

So break out your favorite measuring tool (I used the SpeedTest.net app) and let us know where you are and what your speeds are like.

FaceTime headed to Mac, Windows?

Posted: 10 Sep 2010 05:11 AM PDT

Apple airs first iPhone 4 commercial - FaceTime

Mac4Ever rumors today that Apple’s FaceTime video calling will be coming not only to the Mac in the form of an iChat update, but also to Windows.

While they don’t suggest how it would work on Windows, FaceTime is built on open standards and has been released as an open standard. So we could see it integrated by existing services like Skype, Microsoft could build it into their IM client, or — hey — it’s about the only thing Apple hasn’t built into iTunes yet, right?

Currently FaceTime is limited to iPhone 4 and iPod touch 4, getting it beyond iOS and mobile and onto the desktop could help not only spread the technology but increase its usefulness.

You want?

[Mac4Ever, thanks Luc!]

Adobe thinks Apple’s new cross-compiler policy is great, lack of support for (non-existant) Flash player not so much…

Posted: 09 Sep 2010 08:34 PM PDT

Like Google, Adobe is also over-joyed at Apple’s newly changed and clarified developer license agreement, specifically the part that now allows cross-compilers like Flash CS5 Packager for iPhone:

Apple's announcement today that it has lifted restrictions on its third-party developer guidelines has direct implications for Adobe's Packager for iPhone, a feature in the Flash Professional CS5 authoring tool. This feature was created to enable Flash developers to quickly and easily deliver applications for iOS devices. The feature is available for developers to use today in Flash Professional CS5, and we will now resume development work on this feature for future releases.

It’s not all rosy in Adobe land, however, as they point out Apple still won’t let the still not really functional Flash player for mobile onto iOS:

Adobe will continue to work to bring full web browsing with Flash Player 10.1 as well as standalone applications on AIR to a broad range of devices, working with key industry partners including Google, HTC, Microsoft, Motorola, Nokia, Palm/HP, RIM, Samsung and others.

I’ve used Flash Player mobile 10.1 on my Nexus One. It works worse than Flash for Mac which has been around for years and is still horrible (even with hardware acceleration). Flash for BlackBerry and Flash for Palm still haven’t shipped and are so late they could verge on vaporware at this point. Despite Adobe talking about Flash for iOS (then iPhone OS) since 2008, it simply doesn’t exit.

So yes, yay, Flash games and apps can now be ported to iOS. Whoosh, another 2000+. But let’s get Flash player working really well on just one mobile platform before we whine about it on iOS again, shall we?
