Apple releases new iPod touch, iPod nano commercials Posted: 01 Sep 2010 01:51 PM PDT Apple has released new commercials for their updated iPod touch 4 and iPod nano 6. iPod touch – All kinds of fun holds true to its roots — lots of hands doing lots of awesome things, but iPod nano – Travel seems more like a hybrid, including elements previously seen in iPod shuffle commercials — less nano chromatic, more wearable. Check out both commercials after the break and let us know what you think. Do they convince you to buy?

iOS 4.1 Gold Master now available to developers Posted: 01 Sep 2010 12:41 PM PDT Apple has begun seeding iOS 4.1 Gold Master to developers, the final step before the general availability release promised for next week. In addition to fixes for proximity sensors, Bluetooth, and iPhone 3G performance, it includes Game Center, HD photos, HD YouTube uploads, and TV rentals. If you’re a developer, head on over to developer.apple.com and start downloading. No doubt the App Store will start taking iOS 4.1 compiled binaries any time now… [BGR] iOS 4.1 Gold Master now available to developers is a story by TiPb. Epic Citadel for iPhone, iPad demo now in App Store Posted: 01 Sep 2010 12:26 PM PDT One of the highlights of today’s Apple special music event was Epic who showed off their first iOS game. The game, an action-packed, sword-fighting, RPG adventure looked beyond gorgeous (it’s from the people who made Gears of War, what do you expect?) and it’s coming later this year. But you can snag a copy of the demo in the iTunes App Store now.

Apple TV has A4 chip, iOS, so where are the apps, games, a web browser? Posted: 01 Sep 2010 12:11 PM PDT The new Apple TV is running on an Apple A4 chip, just like iPhone and iPad, and almost certainly running iOS, so where are the apps, games, and web browser? We got Netflix, but it was built in just like YouTube. We got iOS under the covers but no iOS-style UI. We got AirPlay, so we can stream from iPhone or iPad, and presumably there’ll be an Apple Remote app to control Apple TV via iPhone or iPad… … but I kinda wanted more. Apple TV wins on ease of use, but for power and flexibility one of those new Mac Minis and the excellent Windows 7 Media Center are the nuclear option, and many also cheap boxes like Roku, Boxee, etc. arguably have more bang for the buck. Could Apple have an Apple TV SDK in the wings, something to announce for developers at a late date? Or is it the most closed of the already closed iOS boxes? I have to believe gaming on Apple TV is a gold mine, so my bet is we see apps… eventually. What’s yours? Apple TV has A4 chip, iOS, so where are the apps, games, a web browser? is a story by TiPb. iOS 4.1 to fix proximity sensor, Bluetooth, and iPhone 3G performance bugs Posted: 01 Sep 2010 12:00 PM PDT Steve Jobs began his introduction of iOS 4.1 for iPhone and iPod touch not by listing the new features, but by listing the bugs it fixes — proximity sensor, Bluetooth, and iPhone 3G. Each of those were annoying enough to be near deal-breakers for some, so their being fixed is certainly good news. Finally. iOS 4.1 is scheduled to arrive next week. Is that soon enough for you? iOS 4.1 to fix proximity sensor, Bluetooth, and iPhone 3G performance bugs is a story by TiPb. This feed is sponsored by The iPhone Blog Store. |

New Apple TV, 1/4 the size, streaming only, rental only, Netflix, $99 Posted: 01 Sep 2010 11:34 AM PDT We don’t know if it runs iOS but we do know the new Apple TV, introduced today as part of Apple’s 2010 special music event, is 1/4 the size of version 1, and does away with sync and purchase for stream and rent, and bakes in Netflix all for only $99.
You’ll be able to get HD Hollywood movies day and date with the DVD/BD for $4.99 and older content will cost less. TV shows from ABC and FOX will cost $0.99. Steve Jobs calls their Netflix integration the best anywhere (‘natch), and with AirPlay (the newly rebranded, expanded AirTunes) you can stream audio, video, and photos from any iOS. Speaking of which, if the new Apple TV is running iOS Apple made no mention of it, nor did they mention apps — or games! — or Safari web browsing. UPDATE: Daring Fireball says it is, indeed, running iOS. It’s also powered by an Apple A4 chip, so that makes the kind of sense that does. Mixed bag of hobby? Ships later this month. Apple introduces iTunes 10 with new icon, streamlined UI, Ping social network Posted: 01 Sep 2010 11:20 AM PDT iTunes 10 was shown off today during Apple’s special music event and the big news is — the CD is dead and a new icon is born. Okay, the real big news is a better, more streamlined user interface and the introducing of Ping, which Steve Jobs said is a social music network that blends aspects of Facebook and Twitter.
The interface is odd — it realigns the red, yellow, and green OS X close, dock, optimize icons vertically instead of horizontally… why? but does seem to present data in a much more usable way. Ping lets artists and fans alike either raise your their and let anyone follow, choose to approve followers, or create a social circle just for friends. Artists can share status updates that allow for photos, video, and comments, fans can see what their friends like, find out about concerts and buy concert tickets, and find others to follow. You can rent TV shows, just like you’ll soon be able to on iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV. It’s that usual 30 days to start deal, but you have 2 days to finish. Support for AirPlay, the new version of AirTunes, is built in so you can stream music, video, and pictures around the house. And for iOS users, they claim sync is simpler:

Apple introduces iPod touch with Retina Display, FaceTime, HD Video Posted: 01 Sep 2010 10:42 AM PDT As part of the 2010 special music event, Apple CEO Steve Jobs introduced a new iPod touch with Retina Display, HD video recording, FaceTime video calling, Apple A4 chip, 3-axis gyro, and iOS 4.1 with Game Center.
The good news is that the video recording really is 720p. The bad news is that the still photos are only 960×720(!). And yes, it’s thin. Unlike last year, they’re not letting the previous generation iPod touch linger around as the bargain basement SKU either. Every storage size and price point gets the new features. Pricing is 8GB/$229. 32GB/$229, and 64GB/$399. (No 128GB model, sorry, iPod classic does linger for that…) and it starts shipping next week. Anyone getting one?
