iLuv case with camera cutout in the center?

ipod case with camera cutout in center

Reader Gerald spotted an iLuv case with camera cutout in the center in a local Marshall’s clothing store:

[The case] was labeled as an iPod Touch 2nd Generation hard shell case made by a company called iLuv. The reason i liked this case so much was because it had a spot for a rear camera, and the dummy cardboard exaple of the iPod clearly showed what the camera looked like. I snapped a pic as proof.

Now what could that have been doing there?

Imaginary 7-inch iPad gets real competition from Samsung

Posted: 29 Aug 2010 06:54 AM PDT

Galaxy Tab vs iPad

While rumors persist Apple will be introducing a 7-inch version of iPad at some point, it looks like Samsung is wasting no time getting their 7-inch competition — the Galaxy Tab — ready of launch. Hey, at least they’re not calling it GalactiPad or SammyPad, right?

Here are the purported specs:

  • HD video playback
  • 7″ screen
  • Android 2.2 (Froyo)
  • Video calling
  • Augmented reality
  • Swype
  • A Sept. 2 coming-out party in Berlin (at the IFA conference).

Samsung manufactures the Apple A4 chipset that powers the iPad and iPhone 4, and we expect they’ll use the similarly specced Hummingbird that powers their Galaxy S-class smartphones here. While Android 3.0 Gingerbread is rumored to have true tablet-sized UI scalability, skinning 2.2 up to fit 7″, especially at a rumored 1280×600 resolution shouldn’t be a huge stretch from the current 800×480. They’ll also, apparently, be offering a range of iPad-like accessories, including a keyboard dock.

So what do you think? Is getting the Galaxy Tab out before a 7-inch iPad (if Apple ever actually releases one) a smart move to grab market share for Samsung? And how does 7-inches of Froyo compete with 9.7-inches of optimized iOS on the current, non-speculative iPad?

iPad now shipping in 24hrs

iPads shipping in 24 hrs

Apple’s online store now lists both iPad Wi-Fi and iPad Wi-Fi + 3G as shipping in 24hrs, and not just in the US but in international stores from Canada to the UK as well.

Supplies of Apple’s “magical and revolutionary” new device have been highly constrained since launch, leading delays in international rollouts and concerns that the IPS panels just couldn’t be made fast enough to meet demand.

Did demand slow or did production rise? We’ll have to wait for next quarter’s results to find out.

[Thanks everyone who sent this in!]

Concept: Magic iRemote for iOS Apple TV/iTV

Posted: 29 Aug 2010 06:17 AM PDT

magic iController for iTV

Dan Wineman's concept, above, for an iOS-powered Apple TV/iTV remote that’s essentially an iPod touch without the screen, is interesting. Same accelerometer/gyro, same multitouch, same home button.

I think this device might even work as the only remote for the iTV, even when you're just using it to, you know, watch TV. No pushbutton Apple Remote at all, in other words: everything is gesture-based. Tap to pause, swipe left to rewind, swipe right to fast-forward. Slide up or down to adjust volume. Home key to exit to the menu, which you navigate by flicking and tapping. And just imagine how much better seeking around in videos will be with a touch surface…

John Gruber still isn’t sure if any intermediated device could work (though given you’ll be sitting 10 feet away, one certainly will have to).

It's an interesting idea, but I don't know. The magic in the iPhone/iPad UI isn't about putting your fingers on a flat surface and tapping/sliding/dragging. It's in the direct manipulation. It's that you're touching the actual visual elements on the screen itself. A layer of abstraction peeled away. That's why the Magic Trackpad does not make your Mac feel like an iOS device.

If Apple does go for something like this, however, you just know they’d call it Magic iRemote.
