Facebook for iPhone updated to 3.2.1 to fix bugs, deny Places to those outside US Posted: 19 Aug 2010 11:50 AM PDT Yesterday saw the launch of Facebook 3.2 with Places support for iPhone, and today sees Facebook 3.2.1 with bug fixes and the explanation that Places is being rolled out slowly and is currently not available outside the US. If this update solved any problems you were having, or clarified any confusion, let us know! Apple testing iOS 4.1 on iPod touch 4, iPad 2, and mystery device? Posted: 19 Aug 2010 11:40 AM PDT AppleInsider, quoting “people familiar with the matter” says iOS 4.1 is currently being tested by Apple not only on iPhone 4 (currently available to developers) but the upcoming iPod touch 4 refresh, iPad 2, and an unknown mystery device. iPod touch 4 is pretty much a no-brainer at this point. For the last 3 years Apple has shipped a new iPod touch in the fall along with an x.1 software update, so we’ll consider that a done deal. The iPod 4,1 hardware designation means it will also once again be a major update. Retina display and dual cameras would certainly qualify. As to iPad 2, also a major update if iProd 2,1 is the proper designator, that might get a camera as well come next spring. However, since Apple hasn’t even introduced an iOS 4.x beta for the current generation iPad, it’s harder to predict what the iOS 4.x situation will be by then. 4.2 to mirror 3.2 last year? As to the mystery device, that might just be the iOS Apple TV/iTV we keep hearing about. Hopefully we’ll find out more at Apple traditional fall special music event for iPod and iTunes in the next month or so, but let us know your best guesses below! FaceTime helping couples keep “in touch” Posted: 19 Aug 2010 10:49 AM PDT Among its many other use-cases (see Apple’s recent set of commercials), there are a growing number of couples taking advantage of FaceTime to help them stay connected — and stay intimate — when they’re unable to be together. From overnight business trips to long distance relationships, FaceTime on iPhone 4 provides several advantages over regular telephones and computers when it comes to intimate moments. First, experts say 80% of communication is really transmitted through body language and expression. All of this is lost over text or spoken conversation. Text only allows for word choice. Voice only allows for intonation. With FaceTime and its wonderful video quality you can actually see changes in expression; a twinkle in the eyes, a blush along the cheek, subtle smile, a bittersweet glance. Second, iPhone is a lot easier to move around the house (and into the bed!) than a clunky old laptop. You can have your iPhone comfortably docked or propped up beside you if you want to keep your hands free, or grab it and take it under the covers if the mood strikes you. Gizmodo has posted several tips for the more adventurous among you, should you want to try them out. So have you — or would you — use FaceTime to spice up your love life? Let us know in the comments! Apple No Longer Offering No Contract Pricing for iPhone in the US? Posted: 19 Aug 2010 09:59 AM PDT According to the Apple website, it appears like US users no longer have the option to purchase an iPhone at no commitment pricing. In the US, AT&T is the exclusive carrier. A lot of users prefer to purchase a phone at no commitment price and unlock it for use on T-Mobile (and some people just don’t like contracts). The AT&T websites still seems to be offering the no commitment price for the iPhone. Apparently you must purchase a no commitment iPhone in store. Doesn’t make any sense to us either. AT&T stated they have not made any policy changes on their end so is this just the new reality for Apple in a post Jailbreakme.com world? You can buy factory unlocked iPhone 4 in most countries outside the US now, so is unlocking still that big of a concern here at home? I guess we’ll have to wait and see if AT&T’s website follows suit. Anyone seriously upset by this? Awesome iPhone and iPad apps and updates – August 19, 2010 Posted: 19 Aug 2010 08:59 AM PDT We’re shifting our focus from iOS 4 compatibility updates to any iPhone or iPad app or game, new or updated, that seems especially awesome. So if you guys see anything you think deserves some special attention, let us know in the comments and we’ll look at including it in a future roundup! Continue on to see what we found this time!
PandoraPandora recently updated their current app to support hi-res images on the iPhone 4. It also fixes several issues with the last version of Pandora. This will also change control settings for volume control and fix crash issues. Since downloading this update, Pandora’s been a lot more stable for me. How’s it been for you guys? Box.netBox.net is a great service for sharing files and viewing them on the go. They offer free accounts as well as paid accounts. There’s a lot of options for file storage and sharing out there, and Box.net is definitely a worthy competitor. This update adds fast app switching as well as some tweaks to the general UI. It also adds speed improvements for viewing files by adding caching. If you have it, grab the update, if you don’t, try it out and let us know what you think! Cannon CadetsCannon Cadets is a new game coming to us by the same people responsible for Little Metal Ball. (If you don’t have Little Metal Ball, check that one out too!) Most of their games are physics based games that require maneuvering and use of the accelerometer. This game combines a story into puzzles and 80 graphically awesome levels. Definitely worth a try. You can also choose an in-app purchase that’ll allow you to unlock all the levels if you want to skip around instead of playing in order. If you pick it up, let us know what you think! Photoshop ExpressPhotoshop has long been a favorite of many graphic junkies, and while the iPhone and iPad (yes, I said iPad) versions of Photoshop won’t do you any good for hardcore editing, for on the go picture editing and adding fun little tweaks to your pictures, Photoshop Express is great. This version adds compatibility for iPad too! This version also allows native uploading to Photoshop.com and Facebook. The general UI seems to be revamped a bit as well as some of the workflow spaces. Dragon MedicalThis app is mainly focused on professionals in the medical industry. You can use voice controls in order to look up drug interactions, diagnosis information, and much more. It aggregates from some of the more popular databases on the internet. So if you’re a medical professional or student in the medical field, it may be an app worth a second look. Awesome iPhone and iPad apps and updates – August 19, 2010 is a story by TiPb. Clearcam for iPhone – app review Posted: 19 Aug 2010 08:42 AM PDT Clearcam for iPhone is an app that compliments the already existing camera app. Instead of tapping camera, you take your pictures through Clearcam. I found myself using this app when I wanted clearer pictures or when I was in an area that pictures came out either blurry or dark. The concept is quite simple, it’ll take several shots of the same thing and either overlays the shots or chooses the best one (depending on what setting you choose). The app claims to up quality of the camera from 5MP images to around 11MP images.
When first loading Clearcam, it looks somewhat similar to the iPhone camera app. It adds a few options that are the basic foundation of what the app really does. You’ll see the shutter button and then two options. One labeled “quick” and one labeled “enhanced”. The quick setting is just that. It will take 3 shots in rapid succession. It will save the best one to your camera roll. It works like it says it does and typically always gets a good shot. The enhanced mode will take 6 shots quickly and it will take the best parts of each one, essentially stitching them together to create a better all around image. In my experience, it was somewhat touch and go. I also would take the same picture with my stock camera app. In some scenarios, it seemed like the stock camera app took better pictures than what Clearcam stitched together. It was rare, but it did happen occasionally. I’m not sure if maybe the app has trouble stitching certain pictures together or rendering them, but there’s definitely a bug there. The app performs better in low light settings than the default camera in all instances (at least in my experience). I’d probably attribute this to the fact that it’s picking either the best picture or rendering 6 pictures together to create the best possible image. If the exposure was a little dark in some places, it will pull the better pieces from another picture. Having this app in low light settings is enough to justify purchasing it in my opinion. (*Side note about pictures, most of them are better quality than shown here, we have a limit on image uploads so I had to downsize some of them which will reduce the quality a bit) Pros
Cons

So will you be using Facebook Places? Posted: 19 Aug 2010 05:29 AM PDT Facebook has launched their own location-based check-in service called Places, and updated their iPhone app to support it, but will you be using it? Some people maintain sharing your life, and your location, allows for “serendipitous” discovery — people who you may never otherwise know or meet see you’re nearby and take the opportunity to say hello. Others think it’s pretty much a gateway to everything from embarrassment to stalking. What makes Facebook a little different is that even your friends can check you into Places, unless you turn them down or turn it off. Who are you comfortable sharing your Places/location with? No one? Just friends? Friends of friends? Everyone? So will you be using Facebook Places? is a story by TiPb. This feed is sponsored by The iPhone Blog Store. |
Posted: 19 Aug 2010 05:15 AM PDT Google continues to rapidly reincarnate their iPad Gmail web app, this time introducing Apple Mail-style stacks into the mix. Back when the iPad optimized version of Gmail was launched, Google emphasized their new code base would allow for just this kind of fast feature development, and now hot on the heels of the new compose screen, stacks will allow for easier grouping and organizing of mail. They also gave Google’s team a chance to play with CSS transitions to try and get closer in look and feel to native apps. Our question is — how many of you are using Gmail via the web browser on iPad rather than via GoogleSync or IMAP in the native mail app? Are the extra features like labels and star worth the lack of notification and native performance? [Google, Mobile Blog thanks trevor!] Google stacks Gmail for iPad is a story by TiPb. iOS used by 100% of multi-platform developers on Millenial network Posted: 19 Aug 2010 05:06 AM PDT Millennial Media’s July Mobile Mix report shows that while iOS is still dominant, Android is coming on like a freight train. Millenial’s stats are also one of the few ways to see what’s trending outside the increasingly closed worlds of Google- and Apple-assimilated and controlled ad networks. Here’s the breakdown:

Updated: Apple Store is down, start the speculation! Posted: 18 Aug 2010 10:05 PM PDT The Apple Online Store is down and while normally Wednesday night would trigger “it’s just maintenance” mode in me, there are announced products still awaiting “go live” status like the white iPhone 4! Seriously, though, that’s delayed until the end of the year but there’s still the 27″ LED display, and all sorts of rumors about new Apple TV/iTV and 7″ iPads that it’s worth taking the gamble on a post. Of course new iOS-related hardware is usually preceded by Steve Jobs showing it off on stage, so the odds of anything really surprising are low, low, low, but give us your best guess anyway. Will there be anything new when the Apple Store comes back up, and what? Updated: Nothing, it turns out. Updated: Apple Store is down, start the speculation! is a story by TiPb.
