NAVIGON celebrates App Store anniversary with 50% off sale Posted: 12 Aug 2010 09:36 AM PDT NAVIGON has been on the iTunes App Store for one year, and to celebrate the anniversary they’re offering 50% off their turn-by-turn navigation apps and in-app purchases, including MobileNavigator and MyRegion:
I recently tried MobileNavigator for the first time when I took a trip up north. We were going to be going through areas of no cell coverage so I couldn’t use the built-in, online Maps app (because they wouldn’t load without data). MobileNavigator puts all the maps on your iPhone so even if you lose data, you still have GPS and it can still display the maps. Sure, it makes for a big download (over 1.5GB for all of North America) but I must say it was amazing. It was very smooth and we never noticed when we dropped from 3G to EDGE or offline — it just kept navigating. It even reminded us about a side trip we’d forgotten about on the way and helped us find a restaurant we just couldn’t locate (we had to trust it though, our own sense of north and south had betrayed us!) All in all I was very happy with it so if you’re looking for an on-board, offline navigation app for your iPhone, and NAVIGON interests you, this is a great time to try it out. (If you do, make sure you tell me how it works for you). Here’s the app pricing:

Would you switch from AT&T to a Verizon iPhone? Posted: 12 Aug 2010 06:07 AM PDT Would you switch from AT&T to a Verizon iPhone 4 if such a mythical beastie ever proves real? You’d gain a different network footprint, which could provide better voice and data coverage in your area, but you’d also lose simultaneous voice and data as EVDO Rev A currently can’t walk and chew that gum at the same time. You’d also trade AT&T customer service for Verizon customer service, which could be good or bad depending on your experience. Likewise, while AT&T has received tons of flack for their network, they’ve also had 3+ years of experience handling massive amounts of iPhone traffic, something Verizon may also struggle with. We’ve already asked if Verizon Droid owners would switch to a Verizon iPhone, so fair’s fair, if you’re an AT&T iPhone owner, would you switch to Verizon iPhone? Simple answer in the poll up top, and tell us why or why not in the comments. Would you switch from AT&T to a Verizon iPhone? is a story by TiPb. This feed is sponsored by The iPhone Blog Store. |
Game Center slowly coming to life? Posted: 12 Aug 2010 05:53 AM PDT Apple’s iOS Developer News is letting developers know how to set up Game Center achievements and leaderboard categories:
Apple announced Game Center way back in early April but instead of shipping it in June with iOS 4, they said it would be coming “later this year”. The basic idea is to give “Xbox live” style social networking to iOS devices like iPhone and iPad. For example, Chad challenges me to the latest hot FPS. I get a Game Center notification but since I don’t have the game, it asks me if I want to get it and then automagically handles the download, and since it knows Chad and I are friends, gives me a grenade launcher and sets me after him. Then it shows all our other friends how Georgia sniped me just as I was about to blow him up. Dang. Though it’s obviously game-centric, there are rumors Apple could extend features to other apps as well. Let’s hope “later” comes as soon as possible. Camera+ no longer in iPhone App Store Posted: 12 Aug 2010 05:30 AM PDT Camera+ is no longer in the iTunes App Store following a bizarre week that rejection, revelation, feature requests, and possible take down. Here’s the short version — Camera+ pushed out an update that would let users take photos via the hardware volume buttons. Apple rejected the update because it does not currently allow that functionality. Camera+ developers TapTapTap posted about the rejection and said they’d filed a feature request with Apple to change the policy and allow volume buttons to be re-assigned. They also let slip on twitter that a little easter egg would allow the volume buttons to be re-assigned in the current version of TapTapTap. Then they deleted the tweet, but the internet had already picked it up and propagated it. Apple has a policy on easter eggs. If they’re disclosed and innocuous they’re fine. If they’re undisclosed and used as a way to circumvent the review process and App Store policies, they’ll get you removed. Basically, if the feature wouldn’t get approved out in the open, don’t try to sneak it in as an easter egg. So now either Apple has pulled Camera+ or TapTapTap has taken it down themselves to proactively remove the easter egg. We’ll likely have to wait until they let us know. And that’s where I start to wonder if it’s really a story, or media manipulation as marketing? They’ve already made a reported $500,000 in sales, and this little round of publicity — should they get back into the App Store — won’t hurt. Except, of course, when the press starts to feel played, it will eventually backfire. Maybe that’s the real easter egg?
