iPhone at Work: Audio-Engineering Student

Posted: 04 Aug 2010 01:50 PM PDT

How does an audio-engineering student use his iPhone to get the job done and what iPhone apps help get him through his day? TiPb's iPhone at work contest aims to bring you just such slices of the iPhone life. Here's elijahpr’s answer and as a small token of thanks we're sending him a $20 iTunes gift certificate. If you want to see your name up on the TiPb home page and get a gift certificate all your own, head on over to the TiPb iPhone Forum and share your story now!

I go to a small, private college in New England that focuses on media-related careers such as audio engineering, film/video, and radio broadcasting. My first iPhone was a black 8GB 3G, which I stood in line for on launch day at my local AT&T store. Since then, I've bought both the 3GS and iPhone 4 on launch day, and they have been immensely helpful both when I'm in school, and out.

A typical day with my iPhone starts the night before, when I open up the Clock application and set my alarm for the next day. Usually it's something obnoxious, like a Bon Jovi song or the Crickets ringtone, mostly because I know it'll wake my roommate up and we don't get along very well. (Mature, I know). After waking up to something along the lines of "Dead or Alive", I check my SMS, Mail, and Weather applications, as well as my Calender application so I know that I'm on the right day. After deleting my spam, ignoring the multiple emails from my parents (until later, of course) as well as responding to any text messages, I usually read the news from either the CNN, Huffington Post, or NY Times application. After seeing what went wrong in the world while I was blissfully sleeping (face it, no one reports happy things like puppy-births or that the Obama sisters made a new friend at school) I check my calender to see what classes I have. If I'm too lazy to get out of bed to get to my MacBook Pro, Documents to Go will help me finish (or start) the paper that is due by noon. Throughout the day, I keep doing all of the above tasks, including waking my roommate up with Bon Jovi while he's trying to nap. Throw in how I use the iPod app for music, and the Voice Recorder app to record lectures when I don't want to take notes, and you've got a typical day for my iPhone usage at school (Plus the calls from Grandma).

The top apps that I'd fail out of school without are:

Here, File File! – This app lets me connect to my MacBook Pro back in my room, search through my "Homework" stack, find my essay that I forgot to bring to class, and email it to myself so I can print it 30 seconds before it's due. Sad but true story; this has happened more than once. This app is beautiful, but may be a bit pricey for some.

NotifyMe 2 – I use this app in collaboration with my calender to make sure I don't forget the really important stuff. It's simple, and utilizes the iPhone's ability to send push notifications. You can add as many details to the reminder as you want, but for me just seeing the title will jog my memory. Sometimes. If you're like me and sometimes forget things RIGHT after you see them, this app let's you repeat the notification as often as you'd like.

Documents To Go – I cannot even BEGIN to express how many times this app has saved me. It is definitely the most versatile, advanced, sophisticated, and not to mention simple word processing application in the app store (aside from Notes, but that's just not as fun to use). It lets you create, open, edit, and view literally any type of Microsoft Office or iWorks document, and easily make changes. Although I love using my MacBook Pro, I would have no problem if I was only allowed to use Docs To Go to write my papers or create my Keynote presentations. It's so good, and simple, that I wrote 36 pages out of my 50-page essay on it. I'd recommend this for anyone and everyone.

Audio Recording Terms – As mentioned above, I am majoring in audio engineering so this app is unbelievably helpful for last-minute studying, or if I need to look up a console function while I'm recording a band. Although there are some flaws (Like the dev apparently letting his 12-year old proofread it), it gets the job done and is well worth the money if you're a professional in the audio field.

Shazam – I love this app in general, but mostly because it scores me "brownie points" in class. For instance, my teacher will play a song, and ask the class who it is and what the song title is. My disgustingly musically-inept class will stare at him blankly, while I'm off in the corner opening this app and analyzing the song. Not only can I tell him the name, artist, and album, but I can buy it for him on iTunes! Sure it might be sucking up a little, or even cheating if you really want to go there, but the point is that it's useful for many things. (Like getting those extra quiz points for correctly identifying a song).

All in all, I love my iPhone, and while I could live without it, I certainly wouldn't want to. These are just a few of the many ways in which it makes life simpler, without even mentioning things like Multitasking (which I had when my 3GS was jailbroken; sue me.) and the awesome battery life it has. Plus, the iPhone 4 is simply beautiful to look at. I can’t stand having a case on it because it makes it look… well, ugly. (Although I did just drop it on my wooden floor from about 4 feet. iPhone is unscathed; floor now has a dent. Oops. Find me another phone that can do that.)

What about you? Are you a audio-engineering student? If so, what apps help you get through school?

Woz talks iPhone 4 antenna, Google, and Steve Jobs

Posted: 04 Aug 2010 12:51 PM PDT

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak recently held an interview at the Campus Party in Valencia, Spain. He talked about the iPhone 4’s antenna problems, Apples relationship with Google, his roll at Apple, and his relationship with Steve Jobs.

Here’s some of what he had to say.

On iPhone 4 antenna

  • “I have not really had a problem with the antenna… I think it's a very tiny, tiny problem that is blown out of proportion because there are a lot of people who want to accuse Apple of a mistake only because Apple has been so good with its products, creating the products that we all love.”

  • “Even though I can cause the problem on my iPhone 4, I don't have the problem in real usage.”

  • “A problem that is imagined to exist is that much greater the more you love the product that you're afraid won't work”

On Google

  • “In recent times, I've been a little saddened to encounter the controversy between Apple and Google.”

  • “I love Google, but I'm afraid it has a chance of becoming the Microsoft of the future. You remember how Microsoft used all of their ownership of the operating system to take over the browser.”

On his role at Apple

  • “Although I receive a small salary from Apple, I do virtually no real work at the company.”

  • “I like to be more on the outside of Apple, because I prefer to judge products objectively.”

On Steve Jobs

  • “I chat with Steve Jobs now and then, from time to time, and we have never had an argument. We have always been friends. We are not close friends like we once were, spending every day together.”

What do you think? Is the iPhone 4 antenna problem blown out of proportion? Are you afraid of Google becoming the next Microsoft?

My follow up question to Mr. Woz is what exactly he considers a small salary!

Check out video of the interview after the break.

Crazy next-gen iPod, iPad, and iPhone rumors

Posted: 04 Aug 2010 10:26 AM PDT

Could Apple be getting ready to release a 7″ iPad nano and re-designed iPhone 5 as early as January? Could the iPod shuffle or nano with a 1.7″ screen be around the corner in September? Are bumpers going all-silicone?

Our gut says crazy talk, but iLounge has a pretty good track record on leaks so take these for what they’re worth, even if it’s with an ocean-sized grain of salt.

Here are some details:

  1. New iPods. Apple apparently has three new iPods ready to go as early as this month, or as late as September. One is the new iPod nano, one is the new iPod touch, and the third one is a question mark, but may be a small (1.7") touchscreen replacement for the iPod shuffle.

  2. New iPad. A seven-inch-screened version of the iPad is substantially finished and will be ready for announcement either later this year or early in 2011.

  3. New iPhone. According to our source—and we have to say that we find this part hard to believe—Apple is pushing up the release date of the fifth-generation iPhone to early 2011 (as soon as January) because of the antenna issues with the iPhone 4.

  4. iPhone 4 Bumpers, Generations 0 and 2. To reduce the cost of the current iPhone 4 Case Program, the company is currently working on a less expensive all-silicone version of the Bumper to give away after September.

Would Apple fragment the iPad market so quickly by introducing a smaller device? They haven’t done that with iPhone or iPod touch going on 4 years now. Could a January iPhone be an iPhone 4 variant for Verizon instead?

If you have any insight, shoot us an email. If you have a guess, drop it in the comments!

Golla vs. Otterbox Defender in iPhone 4 BJJ Death Match — Amazing Case [give away]

Posted: 04 Aug 2010 06:00 AM PDT

If you had to go into a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu death match with your precious iPhone 4, which case would you be better off taking with you — the Golla Stunt Pouch or Otterbox Defender? Soft, plush fabric with the security of a magnetic flap and belt loop, or hard plastic beneath flexible silicone in a easy on, easy off holster? That’s the challenge they put to me and my husband, Antony in the debut episode of TiPb’s Amazing Case, our hardcore, case vs case tests of strength, durability, and performance.

We figure if either — or both — of these cases can survive being slammed to the mats, rolled on and over, pinned and punished, then they can survive pretty much whatever normal, day-to-day use throws at them.

Follow on after the jump for the tale of the tape, and the give-away!

Golla Stunt Case for iPhone 4

Golla Stunt is perfectly named for the stunts we’re pulling in TiPb’s Amazing Case. It’s a side-loader and claims durable fabric and a magnetic flap that’ll keep your iPhone 4 secure and scratch-free. The belt loop, while harder to take on and off, also means it’ll stay on until it’s ripped off. There’s also a zippered pocket inside for your credit cards, ID, cash, gym membership, or hospital card (depending how the stunt ends!). And if the dark tones of the Stunt don’t knock you out, there are a ton of other colors and styles to choose from.

  • Soft materials
  • Fun and trendy patterns and colors
  • Large belt loop
  • Magnetic closure

Otterbox Defender for iPhone 4

The Otterbox Defender is rugged in the rock-em-sock-em tradition, and promises protection from drops, bumps, dust, and shock. The screen is covered, the casing is covered, even the buttons and ports are covered. The silicone outer skin and the hard plastic shell are a one-two punch of protection, and notched inside its holster, it clips, it swivels, and it secures your iPhone to your belt yet lets you snap it off in an instant when needed.

  • Layer 1: Thermal formed protective clear membrane. Protects keypad against scratching, as well as dust intrusion (layer optional depending on the level of protection desired)
  • Layer 2: Hi-impact polycarbonate shell for an added guard against drops and shocks
  • Layer 3: High quality silicone skin to absorb bump and shock
  • Full access to all keys, ports and functions

Fight! (And give-away!)

Check out the video above to see the results of our Golla Stunt Pouch and Otterbox Defender Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu death-match, then head on over to the TiPb iPhone 4 accessory store, find your favorite Golla bag (they’ve got tons of styles) and paste the link in the comments below. We’ll pick a couple of you and send you Golla bags of your very own. (Make sure you leave a valid email address so we can contact you if you win). US mailing address required.

Are you ready? (Are you ready?) Bring it!

Apple investigating web-based exploit used for iOS 4, iPhone 4 Jailbreak

Posted: 04 Aug 2010 03:17 AM PDT

Jailbreakme

Apple is aware of the web-based exploit used to Jailbreak iOS 4 and iPhone 4, but also potentially able to allow malicious access to any iPhone — Jailbroken or not — and are investigating it.

While many users were thrilled at the rapidity and simplicity with which Comex et. al. delivered an iOS 4 and iPhone 4 Jailbreak, that same exploit could just as rapidly and simply be used to hack any iPhone for any reason — including malicious ones like stealing your data.

Tapping on a web link is far easier to get someone to do than downloading and running a program, and with this exploit being zero-day and in the wild, Apple will need to get it patched and fast.

Until they do, the usual advice applies — don’t go to websites you don’t trust completely, and don’t click on links in emails if there’s any chance they’re malicious (go type the URL in the browser yourself).

iOS 4.1: Game Center gone from iPhone 3G, iPod touch G2

Posted: 04 Aug 2010 03:08 AM PDT

iOS 4.1 Game Center

Yesterday, Apple released iOS 4.1 beta 3 for developers. Included in this release is the removal of Game Center support for the iPhone 3G and 2nd generation iPod touch.

Game Center is one of the big features that we have been waiting for since the announcement of iOS 4 and now it appears that Apple is stripping it from older generation iOS devices. Why? Is Game Center so complicated that it needs the improved hardware of the newer devices? Keep in mind, this is only a beta release, so it is possible for Game Center support to return in the final build.

However, if Game Center support does not return to iPhone 3G and the 2nd generation iPod touch and you own one of these devices, does it entice you to upgrade?

ultrasn0w carrier unlock now available for iPhone 4

Posted: 04 Aug 2010 03:04 AM PDT

ultrasn0w carrier unlock for iPhone 4

If your iPhone 4 is locked to AT&T or another carrier, good news — the ultrasn0w unlock is now available to set you free.

Those who ponied up full price for an international, factory unlocked iPhone 4 direct from Apple need not apply. Those who chose subsidies and the lock that came with it, get your Jailbreak on and head over to Cydia. If ultrasn0w doesn’t show up immediately, search for repo repo666.ultrasn0w.com.

Version 1.0-1 of ultrasn0w works for:

  • iPhone4 baseband 01.59
  • 3G/3GS basebands 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01 and 05.13.04

Remember, you’ll need a microSIM card if you plan on jumping to another carrier, and in the US that means manually cutting down your T-Mobile SIM to microSIM size.

As always, Jailbreak and unlock will void your warranty and could cause other problems with your device. If you don’t know what you’re doing, don’t do it. If you decide to go ahead, let us know how it works for you.
