Verizon to offer iPhone in January 2011?

Posted: 29 Jun 2010 03:12 PM PDT

iphone_4_verizon

So much for those reports claiming Verizon was not interested in the iPhone as Bloomberg is now reporting the iPhone is indeed heading towards the carrier in January of 2011. The timing seems a bit odd to release such a device as iPhone 4 right after the holiday shopping season. Then again this timing may have been necessary as it may be exactly when AT&T’s exclusivity agreement with Apple runs dry.

They are basing this latest Verizon rumor on information obtained from two separate sources that claim to be familiar with the rollout plans. All of these back and forth conflicting rumors have been entertaining to say the least but have also gotten old really quickly. Both Verizon and Apple declined to comment.

Any of you sending back your AT&T iPhone 4 to wait for this mysterious Verizon version? Sound off in the comments below!

Updated: Hulu Plus for iPad, iPod touch, and iPhone announced

Posted: 29 Jun 2010 11:26 AM PDT

Update: The Hulu Plus application [iTunes Link - Free] is now available within the App Store. We viewed some of the free content on a iPhone 4 over AT&T’s 3G network and it streamed flawlessly.

Today that rumor of Hulu introducing a premium paid service has come true as they have officially announced Hulu Plus. It will run you a cool $9.99/month and that will give you streaming access – via Wi-Fi or 3G – to entire seasons of shows that are already available on the free web service along with other programming that is not available on Hulu’s website. And the good news is it’s just not for iPads but rather every device in the iOS family – iPod touch, iPhone, and iPad. There will also be future support for a countless number of other devices such as the Playstation 3 (July) and Xbox 360 (2011). If this sounds like your cup of tea be sure to sign up for the preview invite here.

How many of you are getting ready to do away with your cable or satellite TV service?

Ducati motorcycle commercial filmed with iPhone 4

Posted: 29 Jun 2010 11:08 AM PDT

The HD video featuring the Ducati Multistrada 1200 motorcycle was shot solely with a iPhone 4. The only trick that was used in post production was stabilization to give the appearance of using a professional camera. All of the very impressive footage was captured this past Sunday in the Pike’s Peak International Hill Climb. If you are not familiar with any Pike’s Peak events, they are simply races to the top of the mountain via some treacherous dirt road terrain.

Be sure to select the 720p option in the video when viewing from your desktop. Video after the break!

Google serves up better Google Docs support for iPhone and iPad

Posted: 29 Jun 2010 09:28 AM PDT

It seems Google has slipped in some improvement for Google Docs document viewing via iPhone and iPad (and Android). For quite a while, the only documents that really played nice (at least for me), were spreadsheets. You can now go to docs.google.com on your Android or iOS device and view formats such as .xls, .pdf, .ppt, .doc, and .docx. I didn’t see anything about .pptx though, I guess we’ll have to wait and see on that one. If they’re supporting .docx, not supporting the newer Powerpoint format doesn’t really make sense to me.

The only glitch I seemed to find is that Word documents aren’t that pretty. Some of my old accounting Word attachments were formatted pretty bad. I checked them on the computer and it wasn’t the actual document. That may be something that needs a tweak on Google’s end.

Here’s a quick tip for iPhone users as well. What I actually do is open the Google Mobile App and click Google Docs, it’ll automatically route you to the docs.google.com page in Safari. So you can go that route as well.

Hit the jump for some screens!

Microsoft Office Mobile coming to iPhone?

Posted: 29 Jun 2010 09:18 AM PDT

The App Store already plays host to several mobile apps that allow users to view and edit documents and spreadsheets, but how about an official MS Office app for iOS that you can natively edit and view all MS Office formats in? Hints persist that it may be coming.  We’ll have to call this one a rumor for now, but considering Bing is already available for the iPhone, it’s plausible.  Apple and Microsoft seem to be playing nice lately, so we won’t rule it out.

It seems a job posting for Microsoft may indicate this is the case.  The following is an excerpt from the posting:

“In addition to the current Windows Mobile 6.5 and upcoming WM7 clients, with the recently announced alliance between Microsoft and Nokia we are working to bring Office Mobile to hundreds of millions of Nokia smartphone owners, followed by other leading Smartphone platforms.”

iOS is definitely a leading smartphone platform, but there’s also others, so we’ll just have to wait and see on this one. What do you guys think?

SPE retractable sync and charge cable for iPhone 4 – accessory review update

Posted: 29 Jun 2010 08:11 AM PDT

iphone_4_retractable_sync_charge_cable

The Smartphone Experts S&C retractable sync and charging cable for iPhone 4 [$4.95] is something Georgia took a look at recently for iPad and iPhone 3GS but, frankly, I needed a convenient, tidy, highly portable way to sync and change my iPhone 4 on the go and so I grabbed it. Literally.

The Smartphone Experts S&C Retractable Cable for iPhone expands to a length of 2 ft. and has a locking feature which allows you to choose which length you would like the cable locked at. A light tug on the cable and it retracts back to its wound state. When wound, the Cable is only 4.5 inches long, making it very easy to bring with you. My regular usb S&C cable was always a tangled mess when I carried it loose in my briefcase. A good deal of time and effort was spent on untangling the cord from whatever it had become attached to. With the Smartphone Experts S&C Retractable Cable for iPhone, charging and syncing my iPhone is a snap, just take it out of my briefcase and plug it in and when I am done a quick tug and is thrown back into my bag. The cable is quite well constructed and after a month of use it is still working like new.

It’s also $4.95, so I’m not too concerned about lending them (which usually translates into giving them away). If you want to keep your iPhone 4 synced up and charged, check out the Smartphone Experts S&C retractable sync and charging cable for iPhone 4.

And check out Georgia’s video after the break to see it in action on the iPad and iPhone 3GS. (Works the same with iPhone 4).

iMovie for iPhone 3GS – there’s a hack for that

Posted: 29 Jun 2010 05:41 AM PDT

iMovie on iPhone 3GS

iMovie has been modified to run on iPhone 3GS, making the previously iPhone 4 exclusive app just a tad less exclusive:

David Romhan Torres: I just make iMovie for iphone 4 run on an iphone 3GS, it's very simple just download it from iTunes, modify info.plist file and change the Minimum system version to 3.0.0 and front-facing-camera to false

If iMovie can run on an iPhone 3GS, why did Apple make it iPhone 4 exclusive? Probably for the same reason there’s no video recording or wallpaper on an iPhone 3G. Apple is very quick to cut off older hardware when they think it will have any impact at all on user experience. iPhone 4 has double the RAM and a faster processor and that’s what Apple decided to make the cut off point.

And just like 3rd parties came up with video recorders for the 3G, iPhone 3GS has had video editors for a while already (ReelDirector, obviously), and will obviously continue to do so. Just not Apple’s. It’s how they roll.

Taimur over at Redmond Pie gave the iMovie for iPhone 3GS port a whirl and you can check out the results in the video below.

UPDATED: Is Apple prepping iWork for iPhone?

Posted: 29 Jun 2010 05:28 AM PDT

iWork for iPhone

Apple is either prepping iWork for iPhone or is making a some interesting art and copy blunders lately. iWork, which includes Apple’s word processor, Pages, presentation software, Keynote, and spreadsheet app, Numbers was released alongside the iPad last April. Right after the iPhone 4 was announced and the product pages went live on apple.com, the Mail feature page showed off a button that offered to “send to Keynote”, much like iPad mail which can do just that.

That image was quickly replaced with one that offered to “send to iBooks” instead. Now, iWork for iPhone has popped up again. An AppleCare advisory in the UK says that software support is included for “Using iWork for iPhone and other Apple-branded iPhone apps.

Is Apple working on making their flagship iPad apps universal? Or are these just coincidental errors?

UPDATE: 9to5mac now has blurry-cam pics up of what they’ve been told is the Pages for iPhone beta. Real, fake, or really fake? Check them out below…
