Rumor: Apple releasing iOS 4.0.1 next week?

Posted: 25 Jun 2010 04:58 PM PDT

iPhone 4 hold different

Apple Insider is reporting that, before being removed, a thread in the Apple Discussion Forums confirmed iOS 4.0.1 was being readied for release next week to address bugs — including the dreaded antenna “hold different” issue (or “death-grip” if you prefer).

If real, that’s good news in that 1) Apple is moving quickly and 2) the reception problem is software related, which means its much easer to fix.

In the mean time, we’re keeping our eyes — and mouse-clicks — peeled for updates… You?

iPhone 4: Everything you need to know in 10 minutes [video]

Posted: 25 Jun 2010 04:21 PM PDT

A quick, 10-minute video walkthrough of everything you need to know about iPhone 4

If you’re aware of the iPhone 4 hype but haven’t really gotten a handle on it yet we’re here to give you a quick 10-minute walkthrough and show you everything you really need to know about Apple’s latest mobile phone.

The fancier, thinner hardware includes chemically strengthened glass on both sides, a stainless steel antenna banded around the side, the incredible 960×640 Retina Display, and impressive 5 megapixel, LED-equipped camera that also shoot 720p 30fps HD video. There’s also a VGA-quality front-facing camera that’s used for Apple’s new FaceTime video calling feature.

iPhone 4 also comes with iOS 4. While most of the features, aside from FaceTime and a new class of apps like iMovie, aren’t unique to iPhone 4, Folders look great on the Retina Display, and multitasking is snappy on the Apple A4 processor for everything from 3D games to streaming music.

For more on iOS 4, check out our iOS 4 in 10 minutes video, and for much more check out our complete iOS 4 feature walkthrough.

If you’re updating from a previous iPhone, make sure you read our iPhone 4 upgrade guide. If you’re moving over from another smartphone like Android, Blackberry, Palm, or Windows Phone, take a look at our switcher guides.

For a good FaceTime call 1-888-FACETIME

iPhone 4 FaceTime one tap call

Apple has set up a service for new iPhone 4 owners who want to taste the glorious future that is FaceTime, but whose Luddite friends won’t cooperate by getting iPhones of their own. Just call 1-888-FACETIME and cheerful Apple service representative will answer, initiate FaceTime with you, and walk you through the feature.

If you give it a try, let us know how it works for you. Just don’t keep calling — it’s not iChatRoulette, okay?

iPhone 4 features: Using LED flash in low light video

Posted: 25 Jun 2010 12:13 PM PDT

The new iPhone 4 is equipped with a much improved 5 megapixel camera with 720p HD video recording capabilities. In addition, there is a built-in LED flash to help in low light situations. We have put the camera and the flash to the test in almost every way except when using the flash to illuminate a poorly lit room while recording HD video. That is, until now!

I have recorded a quick video to see just how well LED flash works in combination with the video camera. As expected, the light does not make much of a difference on items more than a few feet away; but for objects that are close, the little light does an excellent job.

Have you tried your iPhone 4 LED flash out yet? How’s it working for you?

My iPhone 4 has a hairline scratch – from normal use

Posted: 25 Jun 2010 11:17 AM PDT

iPhone 4 Scratched

I have a hairline scratch on the screen of my iPhone 4 and I have no idea how it got there. I’ve had my iPhone for just over 24 hours and I’d like to think I’ve treated the little girl pretty well – it goes in my pocket, sure, but solo. I also have been using the bumper for most of the time. However, the bumper has been on and off and at some point I must have set it face down on a table with a bit of grit or something underneath there.

In other words, the phone has a small scratch from what I would definitely call “normal use.”

It’s a tiny, hardly noticable scratch. With the screen on, it’s invisible – but it’s there and I can feel it. I’ve preordered the Case-Mate Clear Armor Screen Protector for iPhone 4 and am trying not to let the scratch on my shiny iPhone 4 become a scratch on my mind.

After the break, a slightly photoshopped version (just over-sharpened, really, to better show the hairline scratch.)

Verizon not interested in iPhone 4?

Posted: 25 Jun 2010 10:58 AM PDT

Maybe, just maybe, these pesky iPhone 4 on Verizon rumors will finally fade away as Droid Life reports they’re fully committed to Android and their current high-end lineup of devices like the new Droid X.

“And the second part of the meeting (and most important to us) was to announce that they will not be interested in the iPhone 4 (as of now) and are putting full effort behind Android and the new lineup of Droid devices.”

In case you were wondering, the first part of the meeting was about a advertising adjustment where the "Wireless" tag is removed from “Verizon Wireless” but we just care about the iPhone part.

Personally I’ve felt since the release of the Motorola Droid last year that it was pretty evident Verizon was standing firm behind the (more controllable?) Android platform and it would be a long while before any iPhone landed on the carrier.

Rene on the other hand feels Verizon is using a bit of reverse phycology in order to get customers to stop waiting for iPhone and start buying Droids. Now if Droid Life is correct, that would mean all of those CDMA iPhones would be headed to Sprint right? You have to love rumors.

You be the judge, has Verizon really given up on the iPhone? Sound off in the comments!

Is signal strength a factor in iPhone 4 antenna reception issue?

Posted: 25 Jun 2010 08:57 AM PDT

We’ve gotten a few emails this morning from TiPb readers who think signal strength might be a factor in the dreaded iPhone 4 “hold different” reception problems. Last night when testing at home, they could kill the signal by holding the iPhone 4 over the lower left side. When taking it out of their homes and onto the streets, it didn’t seem to happen any more.

Could signal strength be a factor? If you’re having the “hold different” antenna band reception problem, have you tried it outside in a high signal area yet? If so, any difference?

UPDATE: Jeremy says we should mention reports like Engadget’s, where they get better reception with the new antenna. Jeremy is almost always right, so we’re mentioning it. Bottom line seems to be: strong AT&T signal, and the new antenna does wonders. Poor AT&T signal and covering the antenna, there’s no hope for you.

Apple and AT&T hit with lawsuit over disappearance of iPad unlimited data option

Posted: 25 Jun 2010 08:55 AM PDT

Apple and AT&T have been hit with a class-action lawsuit over what some are calling the bait and switch removal of iPad 3G unlimited data plan. Since June 9, three consumers went to the law firm of Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein, LLP to file the amended complaint.

“The availability of an unlimited data plan was a key reason why consumers paid the extra $130 charge to access the 3-G network, and their ability to switch in and out of the unlimited data plan was also an important consideration in the decision to purchase an iPad,” stated Lieff Cabraser attorney Michael W. Sobol. “The complaint alleges that Apple and AT&T should have known at the time they were promoting the availability of unlimited data plans, they were not going to keep that promise.”

Who is to blame on this one – Apple, AT&T, or both of the companies? Sound off in the comments below!

iMovie for iPhone 4 – app review

Posted: 25 Jun 2010 08:43 AM PDT

iMovie for iPhone 4 is a video editing application designed by Apple. iMovie is also the name of the video editing software included in iLife, which is bundled with every Mac. iMovie is only available for iPhone 4. (Don’t be sad, it needs the extra RAM and Apple A4 processing power).

As with most Apple products, iMovie is very easy to use and is fairly intuitive. If a tap doesn’t do what you want, a double tap will. iMovie can be used in either portrait or landscape, but landscape seems more natural for me.

While in editing mode, the top center of the screen shows your movies, the bottom of the screen has the timeline, and the sides of the screen have options: projects, upload media, upload media directly from camera, and play. When choosing media to add to your project, there are three tabs: video, photos, and music. Videos are listed in reverse chronological order, but photos are listed in chronological order. I find this annoying because it’s very likely that the photo I want to choose was recently taken and scrolling through hundreds a photos every time gets tedious. Not to mention, scrolling through photos is very laggy. This needs to be fixed.

Editing your movie is a breeze. You can drag clips around, trim the edges of clips, add titles, quickly switch between themes, and make minor edits to transitions. If there is a clip or photo you want to remove, just drag it off the timeline. There is one thing I want to mention about titles, however. They are very nice, but you cannot edit their length. Titles are automatically the same length as the clip you have the title attached to. Another simple feature that is missing is the ability to add plain text against a colored background.

Although there are a few little things missing from iMovie, I found it to be an excellent and quick way to edit a video. This is the first release of this app and I look forward to the changes that Apple may bring to it in the future. For only $4.99, iMovie is worth every penny.

Video and screenshots after the break! (To see a completed movie that was created with iMovie, check out my quick review of the iPhone 4’s camera)

Pros

  • Very easy to use
  • Comes with 5 themes: Modern, Bright, Travel, Playful, News
  • Can add your own music or chose from Apple’s theme music
  • Export as, medium (360p), large (540p), or HD (720p)

Cons

  • Titles last the entire duration of clip, with no option to set the length.
  • Cannot add more than one audio track
  • Cannot split clips
  • Must pan over images. Cannot have entire photo displayed in video.
  • Searching through photo library has major lag
  • Photos are listed in chronological order instead of reverse chronological order
  • Cannot add a text slide
