iPhone 4 experiencing signal drop when antenna band is held?

Posted: 23 Jun 2010 04:06 PM PDT

iPhone 4 noise cancelation

Starting off with a complaint in the MacRumors forums and soliciting other user feedback from there, Gizmodo is compiling a hefty list of people whose brand new iPhone 4 would drop from full bars to next to none — when they held it by the stainless steel antenna band.

Is it shorting something when both parts are connected by a conductive human hand? Is it a pressure issue? Just some units or all of them?

We don’t know yet but if you’re having the same problem let us know!

iPhone 4 vs Droid X – tech specs

Posted: 23 Jun 2010 01:25 PM PDT

How does Apple’s iPhone 4 compare to Motorola’s Droid X and HTC’s Droid Incredible, Evo 4G, and Nexus One?

Even as iPhone 4 goes out for delivery, and reservists start lining up at Apple Stores, Motorola, Google, Adobe, and Verizon announced the Droid X, the latest, best Android on the planet.

Our good friend Phil from Android Central was there to live-blog all the news live as it happened, and even now is going hands-on with the Droid X, but we managed to tear the spec-sheet away from him long enough to update our joint fact sheet on all things iPhone 4 vs. Android.

For easy reference, here are the Droid X stats gone solo:

  • Huge 4.3″, 16:9, 854×480 screen (that’s 400,000 pixels)
  • HDMI out and DLNA support
  • 1GHz TI OMAP processor
  • Full Flash 10.1 (not available at launch, waiting on Froyo 2.2)
  • 8 gigs on board and a 16gig card included, but compatible with 32gig SD cards for a total potential memory of 40 gigs
  • 512mb RAM
  • 8 megapixel camera that captures 720p HD video
  • Three microphones (outward-facing for video, noise-canceling, and regular)
  • a 1570mAh battery, which should be ‘comparable to the Droid 1′ on battery life
  • GPS, Bluetooth, WiFi, naturally
  • Wi-Fi Hotspot with support for tethering up to 5 devices will also be available for an additional $20 per month with a 2 gig cap.

Good on Android for getting around previous app storage constraints, and for keeping the push on for Wi-Fi Hot Spot. It won’t be released until July 15 but announcing now lets them get b-roll on iPhone 4 coverage so, smart. (Though some are playing this off as more competition to the Evo 4G than the iPhone 4).

Anyway you slice it, this is a big Droid. But is it big enough to go one-on-one with iPhone 4 and iOS 4?

Apple releases statement on white iPhone 4 delay

Posted: 23 Jun 2010 11:37 AM PDT

white iPhone 4 delays

On the cusp of iPhone 4’s official rollout tomorrow, Apple has issued a statement about why the white model, introduced alongside the black by Steve Jobs at WWDC 2010, hasn’t yet been made available to order:

White models of Apple's new iPhone 4 have proven more challenging to manufacture than expected, and as a result they will not be available until the second half of July. The availability of the more popular iPhone 4 black models is not affected.

So, anyone going to wait for white?

iOS4 compatible apps hit the App Store (part 3)

Posted: 23 Jun 2010 11:27 AM PDT

iphone_4_iOS-4-apps

We've been keeping our eye out as more iOS4 app updates keep hitting the App Store filled with multitasking, state saving, Retina Display-ing goodness. So pull out your iPhone or get on iTunes and check for updates. Here are some more we've seen roll out since our last post.

Hit the jump to see what new ones we’ve found!

Twitter for iPhone

[iTunes Link]

Twitter for iPhone iOS 4

This is a big one for most people as it's by far one of the most popular Twitter clients for iPhone.  Now that it's become the official client and is available for free, it's become that much more popular.  Twitter for iPhone hasn't disappointed and rolled out an update that not only supports fast app switching, but resolution support for the new retina display, as well as some bug fixes.

Real Racing by Firemint

[iTunes Link]

Games are what most users are really looking forward to with the new display.  Looks like some developers are really starting to take advantage of the new display. Real Racing seems to have redesigned their graphics to take advantage of the iPhone 4's display.  If you're in the market for a great racing game, this just may be for you.

Here's what's included in the update –

  • New graphics for showing off the retina display with high resolution textures, more detailed car interiors, improved track graphics, beautifully updated menus and exceptionally smooth graphical performance on iPhone 4
  • More responsive and accurate controls on iPhone 4, with three-axis gyro support in addition to the accelerometer
  • Smoother graphics on iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3 with iOS4 anti-aliasing
  • Support for iOS4 multitasking on compatible devices
  • Bux Fixes

Flight Control by Firemint

[iTunes Link]

Looks like Firemint is really on a roll and updating most of their game selection for iOS4.  Most of the updates seem to be in line with those for Real Racing.  Enhanced graphics, fast app switching, anti-aliasing, and gyro support.  If you've never played Flight Control, it's an incredibly addicting game.  If you already have it, go grab the update!

Plants vs Zombies

[iTunes Link]

This is one of my favorite games of all time.  If you haven't picked it up, I highly suggest it.  Those of you who currently have it, it's been updated to support fast app switching in iOS4.  Apart from that, I don't believe the update includes support for the retina display.  I'm hoping we'll see that in a future update.

Trapster

[iTunes Link]

There aren't very many free navigation apps in the App Store.  If you aren't in the market to spend a lot and want a decent one, Trapster may be for you. It also comes with speed trap alerts.  And it comes with support for background navigation.  What more could you ask for?

TomTom

[iTunes Link]

I've read in several places that users were having issues with TomTom after upgrading to iOS4.  TomTom has issued an update to not only fix compatibility issues but adding some great features to support iOS4. So if you upgraded to iOS4, make sure you update so you can continue using TomTom.  GPS apps are probably going to improve ten-fold with the release of iOS4.  Here's a list of new and improved TomTom features –

  • Seamless navigation while calling (3GS and iPhone 4 only)
  • Newly updated maps
  • Background navigation instructions
  • Route Sharing (share route details with contacts via e-mail)
  • Departure Reminders (add them to your calendar)
  • Eco Routes (more fuel efficient routes)
  • Car Symbols (personalize car symbols on your driving screen)

Slacker Personal Radio

[iTunes link]

Slacker Personal Radio for iOS 4

Slacker is right now releasing version 2.1 which supports multitasking for listening to Slacker Radio in the background and offers convenient controls for accessing the app while performing other device functions. Slacker Radio 2.1 for iOS 4 offers:

  • Support for multitasking
  • Convenient background play controls
  • Music library featuring millions of songs
  • No monthly listening limits
  • Over 120 professionally programmed genre stations
  • Create custom stations based on artists or songs
  • Fine tune stations on-the-fly to play more of the music you like
  • View artist biographies and photos
  • View album art and reviews
  • Pause and skip songs
  • Rate songs as favorites
  • Ban the songs and artists you don't like

If you’re a Slacker Radio Plus subscriber:

  • Cache stations to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch**
  • Enjoy Slacker radio stations even without a wireless network
  • Unlimited song skipping
  • Ad-free listening
  • Complete song lyrics†
  • Unlimited song requests for creating stations
  • "Peek Ahead" artist and album preview

That’s what we’ve found so far, but if you find any you think deserve a post-up let us know in the comments or send us a tip!

Apple iPhone 4 back glass can be scratched?

Posted: 23 Jun 2010 09:29 AM PDT

iPhone 4 scratches

iFixit claimed the front display on Apple’s new iPhone 4 was protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass, but Engadget’s review unit is already showing scratches on the back side. Was it an earlier test unit not up to release unit standards? Is the Gorilla Glass only on the front and not the back? Is Gorilla Glass not as scratch resistant as we thought? Is it not really Gorilla Glass at all?

Engadget did get a little rough with their iPhone 4 review unit, but no doubt so will users. And the front seems to be holding up fine.

Credit where it’s due — Georgia was worried about that glass Oreo design in general the moment she saw it. Apple’s confident in their tech, especially if that rumor aboutremoving screen protectors from the Apple Store pans out. (The TiPb Store will fully stock iPhone 4 versions of BodyGuardz and InvisibleSHIELD just as soon as possible — no cheap plug intended, we just want our own screens defended!) And again, we don’t know much yet. It’s just the back, and just one review unit so far.

Let us know what you think.

iPhone 4 starts arriving at the door! Share your photos, videos, and love!

Chris Vitek's iPhone 4

Attention TiPb nation, your iPhone 4 have begun arriving! Those of you who pre-orderd for delivery have scored a coup over your reserving-to-wait-in-line-at-Apple brethren. Fair enough. Congrats. Now let’s get on with it:

Chris has started a thread in the iPhone Forums to share his photos and first impressions. If you’ve just gotten your iPhone 4, jump in there and join him. We’ll take the best pics and impressions and post them right here on the front page. (Try to be in the picture with your iPhone — we want to see you to!)

So what are you waiting for? Jump in the Forums and show it off!

  • Chris Vitek (cjvitek): The build quality seems very sturdy. Maybe it is my imagination, but it seems noticeably heavier than the 3GS. While the only screen I can see if the activation screen, It looks great and I can’t see any pixels (although I do wear coke-bottle glasses!).

  • RedDragons: Sweet. This thing is awesome. It feels as cool as I thought it would. Feels a little weird without having the curves(not a complaint, just an observation) Screen rocks, waitin on my buddy to get his to check out FaceTime.

  • Jfelipe83: wow i love the new iphone but it looks smaller than the 3gs any way i am very happy with it… its really fast and the screen is the best

Potential fix for lost 3G data connections following iOS 4 update?

Posted: 23 Jun 2010 08:00 AM PDT

Losing your AT&T data connection following the iOS 4 update? We got a tip from a TiPb reader who spent some time on the phone with Apple support. If you’re having the same problem (typically it’s people with unlimited data, like we mentioned yesterday), try using his steps below to get it back. He said he did it with 2 friends that lost data as well and it seems to work — at least as a temp fix.

  1. Create a new admin account on your computer or use another computer that has iTunes on it to create a new Administrator ID or one with Admin rights. (This stops iTunes from looking at primary user info inside iTunes as that seems to be the issue)
  2. Open iTunes 9.2 and plugin your iPhone, click on Restore, it will download the iOS again and load it on your phone.
  3. Setup as new phone and after it sync’s, check Safari for internet access.
  4. If that works, then login to your normal ID and rename your iPhone and RESYNC all your data.

If you check your Settings and About, you’ll see that their is no carrier listed before this and that’s why it’s happening. It also worked on 2 other stock phones that had the same issue.

People who have previously used Spirit might also find this handy.

[Thanks @audit!]

Expecting your iPhone 4 delivery today? Here’s what to do while you wait

Posted: 23 Jun 2010 04:55 AM PDT

iphone_4

According to a mass of Apple emails, iPhone 4 delivery trucks will be out a day early (or a couple days early if yesterday was any indication!). Are you waiting at home or at work for your shiny new iPhone 4 to arrive? Let us know your delivery status in the comments — from at the hub to on the truck to in your hands! (And yeah, when you get it, run — don’t walk — to the iPhone Forum. and post your pics!)

Meanwhile, here’s how to get ready while you wait:

Make sure you’re running iTunes 9.2

You need iTunes 9.2 in order to activate iPhone 4). Apple released it last Wednesday so, if you haven’t gotten it already, hit Software Update and download the latest, or get it directly from Apple. [iTunes 9.2].

Update your apps

iPhone 4 has that gorgeous Retina Display, so you’ll want to make sure you’ve got the updated apps to show it off! Also, one of iOS 4’s biggest new features is multitasking, especially saved state (so your apps restart where you left them), and background audio, location, and VoIP (so you can listen to streaming music, get turn-by-turn directions, and answer internet phone calls even when not in the apps). However, developers have to update their apps for iOS 4 compatibility. That means new versions will be showing up in iTunes on the desktop or App Store on your iPhone/iPod touch, and that means you’ll have to update to them.

Depending on how fast developers get the updates done, how fast Apple approves them, how many apps you have, and how big they are, this process could take a while. Might as well get started while you’re waiting.

(We’re keeping an eye out for major iOS 4 apps and compatibility updates so bookmark that link for future reference).

Backup your data

If you’re moving from an older model iPhone, like the iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, or iPhone 3GS, or even an iPod touch, and you want to transfer over your settings and data, you’ll need to back it up first. Once you have iTunes installed, plug in your old iPhone and/or iPod touch and sync it. Anything you’ve purchased or updated on-device will also be transferred safely to your Windows/Mac library, and the position of any media you’re currently enjoying recorded so you can keep going from the same place once your iPhone 4 has been synced to the same computer and iTunes account. (It’ll ask if you want to restore from backup).

Remember, if you haven’t synced in a while it could take a few minutes to backup. Don’t be impatient, let it run.

Also remember to launch iPhoto on your Mac or your favorite image capture program on Windows and copy over any photos you’ve taken on your old iPhone. Losing your Camera Roll, especially if it has a lot of special moments recorded, is something to be avoided at all costs.

Get up to speed on iOS 4

Once everything is done and ready, and if you’re still waiting for your iPhone 4 to arrive, why not check out our complete iOS 4 walkthrough so once you’re up and running you can spend your time enjoying the new functionality, not trying to discover it.

More from iPhone 4 teardown – is Apple A4 1GHz?

Posted: 23 Jun 2010 04:43 AM PDT

iphone_4_teardown

We previously mentioned iFixit was tearing down the iPhone 4, and had confirmed 512MB of RAM and said the front and back displays were Corning Gorilla Glass. Well they’re done with the teardown now and here are some more details.

The only area where we’re still unclear is the Apple A4 system-on-chip. iFixit says 1GHz below but Engagdet thought that, while faster than iPhone 3GS, it was slower than the confirmed 1GHz iPad, and MacRumors rough benchmarks bear that out. So what’s the deal on the chip? Is it doing more or did Apple clock it down to get that amazing battery life and lower the thermal impact?

More from iFixit after the break.

[iFixit, MacRumors, Engadget]

  • Like the iPhone 3G and 3GS, there are two silver Phillips screws at the bottom of the phone. But removing these screws releases the rear case instead of the front glass, giving you immediate access to the battery.

  • Unfortunately, the LCD panel is very securely glued to the glass and digitizer. If you break the glass, you’ll have to replace the glass, digitizer, and LCD as a single assembly.

  • The 3.7V, 1420 mAh Li-Polymer battery is not soldered in place, and very easy to remove.

  • The iPhone 4 sports two cameras — a 1.3 MP front-facer, and a 5 MP beauty on the back. Both are located on their own independent boards, making it possible to physically remove the cameras without damaging the phone.

  • The phone uses the 1 GHz ARM Cortex A8 core, much like its bigger sibling, the iPad.

  • Unlike the iPhone 3GS and iPad — which are both equipped with 256 MB of RAM — the iPhone 4 has a whopping 512 MB.

  • The AGD1 is the new 3 axis gyroscope that we believe is designed and manufactured by ST Micro for Apple. The package marks on this device do not appear to be the currently available commercial part, L3G4200D.

  • In what can only be described as a work of genius, Apple has integrated the UMTS, GSM, GPS, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth antennas into the stainless steel inner frame.

  • Broadcom provides both a BCM4329FKUBG 802.11n with Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR and FM receiver and a BCM4750IUB8 single-chip GPS receiver.

  • We’ve identified chips from Broadcom, Cirrus Logic, Numonyx, Samsung, ST Micro, Skyworks, Texas Instruments, and TriQuint.
