iTunes 9.2 feature: edit iOS 4 folders

Posted: 14 Jun 2010 07:07 PM PDT

iTunes 9.2 iOS folder management

iTunes 9.2, currently in beta on the Mac, will be required to install iOS 4 for iPhone and iPod touch when it becomes available on June 21, and here’s likely one of the reasons why — it can edit Folders.

We’ve go a complete walkthrough of iOS 4 features up, but if you’re curious as to how it works in iTunes, the good news is — pretty much as you’d expect. Click on a folder icon and the virtual screen opens up to show the contents, same as in iOS proper. Drag an app out to remove it, or in normal view, drag it over another app to create a folder or an existing folder to add it in. You can even rename the folder if the “intelligent naming” isn’t quite intelligent enough.

An obvious addition to iTunes 9’s app management repertoire but the obvious stuff doesn’t always get done. Nice to see, in this case, it did.

A release version of iTunes 9.2 should proceed iOS 4’s availability.

AT&T not carrying white iPhone 4 at launch?

Posted: 14 Jun 2010 03:16 PM PDT

If the above screenshot really is an internal document via AT&T, there’s some doubt as to whether or not AT&T is going to have any white iPhones on stock for launch day (or in the coming days after). This document seems to have leaked over at modmyi.com.  TiPb aren’t too sure whether or not this is a hoax (maybe just to scare Leanna). We’d assume at least the Apple stores will carry the white models.  Seeing as this is an AT&T internal document, we don’t see this holding any bearing on what Apple will have at launch.

Maybe Apple is keeping the white iPhones as of now in order to keep their stores in stock until more shipments are pushed out?  Even if that were the case, I’d still find that a bit odd.  Pre-ordering starts tomorrow so we should find out either way.  We’re going to see what we can find out on AT&T’s end. BGR has stated AT&T declines to comment and are now reporting the same thing may be happening in Germany as well (and we saw Softbank in Japan announce black-only earlier today).  They seem to think this may very well be the case.  Until we find out more, I’d take this one with a grain of salt, and definitely wouldn’t extend this to what will happen in the Apple stores on June 24th.  What do you guys think?

So what are the UK, France, German, and Japanese iPhone 4 carrier plans going to be?

Posted: 14 Jun 2010 12:40 PM PDT

iPhone 4 France

Even before Apple announced the iPhone 4 was coming to the US, UK, France, Germany, and Japan on June 24, AT&T announced new, tiered and capped data plans and aggressive upgrade options for the new handset. Internationally…? Cricket chirps.

So here’s where the power of the TiPb nation comes in. We’ve put as much as we could find below, but if you know more about carrier plans and upgrade options in the UK, France, Germany, or Japan, drop it in the comments and we’ll update the post.

UK iPhone 4 pricing

O2 UK

Monthly plans begin at 100 minutes and 500 MB of data priced at £25 for a 24-month contract and £30 for an 18-month contract and ramp up to unlimited calling and 1 GB of data priced at £60/£65. A footnote to O2’s pricing matrix indicates, however, that the carrier will continue running a “promotion” offering unlimited data for all smartphones until October, at which time the company will offer additional data in 500 MB (£5) and 1 GB (£10) buckets.

For £20 a month you can buy off your existing contract to become eligible for upgrade faster. [MacRumors]

Working Flash on iPhone and iPod touch?

Posted: 14 Jun 2010 12:14 PM PDT

We all know Flash isn’t going to come from Apple, but it appears the man responsible for the Spirit Jailbreak may also have gotten Flash up and running on the iPhone and iPod Touch anyway. I’m going to go out on a limb and say that if and when a capability like this is released, you’d have to be jailbroken in order to use it.

This appears to be a very early release but it still shows potential for those who really want/need Flash on their iOS devices.  Perhaps an iPad release would follow shortly?  Any iPhone or iPod Touch users out there who would jailbreak just in order to get Flash?  Real or fake? Hit the jump for a video.

Cocoia icon resource updated for iPhone 4

Posted: 14 Jun 2010 11:34 AM PDT

iPhone-4-icon-PSD

Working on an icon for your new iPhone 4 or iPad app? Fresh from WWDC 2010, Cocoia have updated their PSD resource file to include not only the original iPhone/iPod touch and iPad dimensions, but the new iPhone 4 114×114 Retina Display resolution as well:

Again, if you appreciate it, tweet this to help your fellow designers and developers make nicer icons for iPhone 4 (and beyond).

As someone who admittedly skips over anything with a poor icon in the App Store, here’s hoping Cocoia’s generosity — and passion for iconography — is widely embraced.

Go grab it via the link directly below.

iOS 4 features: iPod touch Wi-Fi stays connected when asleep — iPhone too?

Posted: 14 Jun 2010 10:57 AM PDT

iOS 4 on iPod touch persistent Wi-Fi connectivity

One of the more interesting notes on Apple’s iOS 4 for iPod touch page is persistent Wi-Fi connectivity, so Skype calls or push-notifications can come through even when your iPod touch is in sleep mode:

iPod touch can stay connected to Wi-Fi when asleep so you can receive incoming VoIP calls and notifications from compatible third-party apps.

There’s no word on whether this applies to the iPhone as well (since cellular data is typically persistent anyway), but it would be a nice feature to have in all iOS devices — including iPad, especially when roaming with data turned off, or even just to prevent the delays that usually accompany reconnecting to Wi-Fi based remote control apps.

Official Apple retail store application for iOS set to launch?

Posted: 14 Jun 2010 10:30 AM PDT

MacRumors says they are recieving several reports from their sources claiming that Apple is ready to debut their official retail store application for all iOS devices.

“Apple is planning to launch a new iOS application tomorrow that will offer customers access to the company’s online store and iPhone pre-ordering, as well as the ability to book Genius Bar appointments at brick-and-mortar retail stores.”

MacRumors also claims to have gotten word from a customer who emailed Steve Jobs last month regarding the possibility of an iPhone-friendly online Apple Store and received a reply of “Coming soon” from Jobs. This is one of those applications that we figured to have seen in the App Store long ago but with iPhone 4 pre-orders taking place tomorrow, the timing seems perfect.

MindNode for iPad- app review

Posted: 14 Jun 2010 07:46 AM PDT

I am always looking for tools to help me be more productive. I am very excited over discovering MindNode. MindNode is a suite of mind mapping products across multiple Apple platforms that allows you to brainstorm or mind map out thoughts and ideas. MindNode is available as a universal app for iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad as well as a free and paid version for the Mac. Today I will be looking at the iPad version, but functionality is the same across apps.

You start off with a simple node. That node can be an idea or thought, perhaps an object. You can rename the node to what ever you like. From here, you can add another node by tapping the plus icon. You can really start to branch out quickly too. You can branch from the main node, any children nodes, or just make a new node from scratch. If you find your ideas are taking over on a particular node, you can detach it and make it a new node.

To help differentiate nodes and thoughts, you can change colors of the connector lines and the node itself. You can even setup the colors that will be used and what order they appear if you like. If you need to move around a node, simply drag the title to a new location, or you can cut, copy or paste by double-tapping on the node. To help keep your mind maps organized, MindNode gives you the ability to search within your document and look at a list of all of the existing nodes and their parent-child relationships in your document.

Sharing documents is a snap in MindNode. You have several options at your disposal:

  • Mail to MindNode
  • Freemind
  • png
  • Text Outline
  • OPML Outline
Desktop:
  • WiFi sharing with MindNode Pro only
  • Websharing, provides URL, port and user name/password
For all that MindNode does it is an incredible value. The ease of exporting is a particular plus in such a specific type of product. If you enjoy visually brainstorming ideas, concepts and more, MindNode for iOS is a fantastic product that helps to make us more productive.

[$5.99- iTunes Link]

Pros

  • Very easy to use
  • Excellent export options
  • Complete control over color and positioning

Cons

  • More robust customizations (shadows, shapes, etc)
