TiPb 4th gen iPhone (iPhone HD/iPhone 4G) give-away!

Posted: 01 Jun 2010 01:10 PM PDT

TiPb is giving away a 4th generation iPhone!

TiPb 4th gen iPhone (iPhone HD/iPhone 4G) give-away!

That’s right — iPhone HD, iPhone 4G — whatever Apple decides to call it, we’re giving it away.

Here’s the bottom line: you gotta make us a video telling us — no, showing us — why you should be the one who gets the 4th gen iPhone.

Make it funny. Make it scary. Make it silly. Make it out of this world, above and beyond awesome.

We want music, we want songs, we want skits, we want spoofs, we want action and adventure, we want drama and suspense, we want stop-motion animation and Blair Witch close-ups, we want tattoos and jello wrestling — wait a minute, these are Kevin’s notes! Bah! Never mind! — we want the absolute best, most creative, most dazzling video you can make.

We want you to prove you’re the one who deserves a 4th gen iPhone.

Watch the video below, then got to http://www.tipb.com/contest to find out how to enter!

The Early Edition for iPad hits 1.1 – Give-away

Posted: 01 Jun 2010 07:41 AM PDT

The Early Edition for iPad 1.1

One of the things many of us have been waiting for when it comes to iPad apps is a great RSS newsreader and with The Early Edition for iPad 1.1, a contender is here. It includes the same great newspaper look and page-turning feel as the launch-day version but adds what amounts to a must-have feature for many — Google Reader feed import. Here’s the full changelog:

  • Sections! Now you can group & view feeds in customized categories
  • Google Reader / OPML feed & folder importing!
  • Feed discovery! Now you can enter a website URL & The Early Edition will search for discoverable feeds
  • There are now four ways to filter your news: Last Fetch, Today, All Dates & Past Editions
  • Saved state! Now when you exit the app and relaunch, it will go back to the page you were on
  • Auto-fetch will now only occur the first time you launch the app on a given day
  • Fetching now includes a progress bar as visual feedback
  • You can now cancel a fetch before it is finished
  • Speed & performance enhancements
  • Greatly improved international character support
  • UI enhancements
  • App Store links now open the App Store instead of web previews
  • New Help menu with answers to frequently asked questions
  • Bug fixes, including some feeds that were causing crashes

I’ve been beta testing it for a while now and I’ve been very happy with it, so much so that when I switched to an iPad 3G last Friday and my beta wouldn’t load, I missed it.

Give away: If you want to try it for yourself, Glasshouse Apps has been gracious enough to pass along a few promo codes. Just tell us some of your favorite news feeds in the comments below and we’ll pick some of you at random and give you the codes. (US iTunes Store account needed to redeem, Apple’s rule not ours. Also, promo codes expire soon so you’ll need to use them asap!)

Streaming media service Lala goes bye-bye, will iTunes.com take its place?

Posted: 01 Jun 2010 07:20 AM PDT

Lala shuts down

Streaming music service Lala closed its virtual doors today. Acquired by Apple last year, rumors persist that Lala talent and technology will be a part of an upcoming iTunes.com service that moves Apple music, movie, and TV offerings to the cloud.

Recent leaks about an iPhone OS-powered Apple TV that would stream content directly from iTunes seem to play into these rumors, as do Apple’s huge data center being built in North Carolina and iTunes Preview, the new web-based front-end to iTunes media and app content.

Still, that might be the future, but as of today Lala is no more.

Navigon MyRegion celebrates WWDC 2010 with discounts until June 11

Posted: 01 Jun 2010 04:48 AM PDT

NAVIGON is getting ready to celebrate WWDC 2010 (and no doubt the background GPS API in iPhone OS 4!) with sale of their MyRegion app. Whether you’re off to San Francisco for WWDC itself or just touring the bay area for fun and frolic, you can grab MyRegion for half off — $14.99 from June 1-11, 2010, with additional maps for sale for $9.99.

MyRegion gives you the power of choice by letting you pick the map region/regions you need but still includes the features known from the award winning North American version, MobileNavigator. It is the first iPhone navigation app that lets users upgrade to additional regions within the app and on the go, providing cross country navigation by choice. The total U.S. map is downloaded upon purchase of the first "MyRegion," which allows activation of additional map regions via a seamless In App Purchase from within the application. NAVIGON MyRegion allows premium navigation at a reduced price including functions such as Reality View Pro, Google Local Search, Lane Assistant Pro, Enhanced Pedestrian Mode, NAVIGON MyRoutes and much more.

If on-board maps and options are your thing, check it out and let us know how it does for your summer travels.

iPhone OS 4: iTunes streaming audio

Posted: 31 May 2010 07:29 PM PDT

iphone_os_4_streaming_audio_itunes

I mentioned this during the iPhone live! #100 podcast, but iPhone OS 4 has taken a huge leap forward when it comes to streaming audio via the iTunes app. Since iPhone OS 2.2 you’ve been able to tap the title of a podcast to begin streaming (rather than downloading) the audio, even in the background while using other apps, but it was sometimes hit or miss. It would drop out, it would time out, you couldn’t really scrub through it, and if you left it for a while it would lose its place and start over.

In iPhone OS 4 it’s rock solid. You can scrub and it re-buffers and keeps playing flawlessly. You can stop it and come back hours or even days later — even after using the iTunes app to search for other things or the iPod app to play different audio — and it still knows where you left off and starts playing again instantly without missing a beat.

It’s so good you may find you no longer download or sync podcasts but just stream what you want to listen to. (If they let you “subscribe” and receive notifications of when a new podcast appeared in the feed, it would be perfect).

Maybe this is architecturally laying the underpinnings for a grander Apple streaming service, or maybe they just wanted this app to work great for this functionality. Either way, iTunes streaming audio in iPhone OS 4 is a significant improvement.
